Disable UAC and warning dialog?
by Guest Bill- 5 replies
I have disabled UAC on a Vista machine so that I can connect to it from a remote location and change its configuration. However, every time the Vista machine is restarted a window opens above the tray telling the user that UAC is off and that they should "click here" to turn it on. From ignorance or carelessness the user frequently clicks the window and re-enables UAC. How can I prevent this message from appearing? I want UAC off on this machine and I want it to stay off! Thanks. -- ..Bill.

COMPATIBILITY TAB GRAYED OUT ??? HOW TO BYPASS IT IN WINDOWS VISTA ? - open REGEDIT - goto "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" - create a new String Value - name or rename it as the application full path e.g. " C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe " to modify compatibilty "layer" of Internet Explorer, normally with Com tab obscured because it is part of the system, the actual Windows Vista version. - right click on the new String and select Modify - type RUNASADMIN in the Value Data row; this will classify the program to be run as Administrator. This allows you to bypass the GUI mode of setting…

I have a need to set file security in a small app for a customer but have to do it in Visual Studio 2003. So the new security classes in 2.0 are not available to me. I remember I once used a user sample called Win32Security (created Microsoft guys) from gotdotnet. Now gotdotnet is shutdown and moved to MSDN - without all user samples moved to the new site! I wonder if anyone still has Win32Security.dll and can kindly please send me a copy. Thanks.

Vista: Full of surprises
by Guest oparr@hotmail.com- 0 replies

I'm new to Vista and haven't "disabled" UAC yet so am in the midst of enduring all those nagging UAC popup boxes. Yes, I have TweakUAC ready for that. Recently installed a talking dictionary application dated from the 16 bit Windows era (1994) and to my surprise there wasn't a single glitch or pop-up. There are no pop-ups when opening it either and it actually works better on Vista than XP. Starts instantly on Vista, takes forever to start on XP as though XP is debating whether it should let it run. Didn't have to make any compatibility changes, nothing, worked great "out-of-the-box". Are you telling me that this program was properly signed from back in 1994? I f…

Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen

I am running Windows XP Pro on my desktop and have Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 as my security ware. I have built and am editing my website with Ewisoft Website Builder. I have categorized my products before with no problem but it seems now, all of a sudden I get a Trojan popup (the one in the subject line). Everytime I delete it, it comes back. I've tried to quarantine but I can only delete it or skip it. There is nothing for me to allow it. I am not sure if this is a safe trojan or not. Please advise. Also, the Trojan keeps on popping up while I am on the internet or my email now. -- http://cozyhomejewelrystore.com

Bypassing domain and OU GPO settings using the Security Configuration and Analysis MMC
by Guest Spin- 7 replies

Gurus, This is a re-post of a message sent solely to the group_policy NG. I'm copying a wider audience here to engage some discussions amongst you IT Security Managers/security consultants out there. Running Windows Server 2003 SP2 in a single Active Directory domain (Lab environment). I am experimenting with the Group Policy Security database, secedit.sdb If you run the Setup Security INF in the Security Configuration and Analysis Snapin against this database, you will bring your system back Windows security default settings and it will remain that way until the next Group Policy Refresh interval. You must be an admin on the machine to do this. …

impersonation for active directory userid fails
by Guest Anthony LaMark- 0 replies
Hi, Is there a particular property/permission I need to assign to a userid within active directory so that I can user impersonation? I ran into a situation where one particular userid cannot be impersonated but this program has been successfully doing impersonation for quite some time. The LastError message is Logon failed but when I login manually using the userid on this particular machine it is able to login. This leads me to believe there is a local security setting or an AD setting that is preventing me from impersonating. I hope this email makes sense :-). Thanks in advance.

Patches installing during shutdown
by Guest Richard Fangnail- 2 replies

I've had a couple times when I tried to shut down but Windows said it had to install updates and then shutdown. Which it did okay. I'm confused what the setup has to do with this. If you have Automatic Updates on, it could be fully automatic or it could be "Notify but don't install right away." Do these two settings have to do with whether or not it will install during shutdown? If it is fully automatic, you can also set a time, and I think the time selected can cause Windows to update during shutdown.

by Guest Lazarus439- 0 replies

I am getting dozens of entries like these in the security log on a Windows 2003 DC with SP2 installed. The great majority of these errors are from a Vista machine and a user on the Vista machine (me), but not all of there are. However, they seemed to start appearing when the Vista machine joined the network. In addition, when a Vista-equipped laptop comes to my site from another one on the domain, the number of these errors increase. Except for the clutter in the security log, these don't seem to hurt anything., I've been looking for some answer (besides, "no user action required") for some time now and the only cogent answer relates to Vista in a …
