Rejecting ident (port 113) requests
by Guest Mark Olbert- 1 reply

Is it possible to set a firewall rule so that ident requests from a trusted linux server are rejected rather than dropped? Dropping the packets causes various server apps (e.g., telnet, pop3) on the linux server to go into a timeout cycle because they're waiting for a reply that never comes. I can see how to open a port, or an application, but I don't see how to control the response taken when there's no app listening and what I want to do is reject a packet. - Mark

Private key Not Exportable
by Guest MyDogSophie- 0 replies

My users download digital certificatesfrom our payroll company for access to the online payroll application. We get an email with a link, that automatically imports the digital certificate into IE. We do not run through the import wizard. I gave two new computers two weeks ago to our payroll department. After initialing receiving and installing the dig cert login to payroll site works perfectly. When the pc is rebooted the user can no longer access the payroll site; the Private Key becomes non-exportable. Our workaround is to delete the existing cert and the user imports it again. (we have it stored on her desktop). Does anyone have any idea what …

Greetings all, Was wondering if any know if it is possible export a list of issued certificates to a cvs file? I've created a certificate template and trying to se how many users have received two or more certificates from that template. The CA mmc dont give a clear picture since there’s too many certificates issued, so would like to export a list of issued certificates and then use the list in Excel. I guess the best bet is to use the command certutil -db and then pipe it to a file. But any who knows a good or smart way to do it to export a list for a certain template? I’ve talking about a Microsoft Issuing CA, installed on an windows 20…

ASP authentification by ip-number
by Guest Ralph Wiggum- 6 replies

How safe is it to use the client's ip-number versus posting a username/password (in cleartext) in an http request? Assuming the client's ip-number is static. A common use-case would be a web-forum, where only VIP-users should have access to specific topics. Authentification by ip is certainly the most user-friendly, as user don't have register/remember passwords, no? Is ip-spoofing considered easier than picking up unencrypted usernames/passwords from web-traffic?

Homedirs - NTFS permissions
by Guest Radovan Vojtek- 7 replies

Hi all, is there any recomended ACL setting for user homedirs? I'de like to do following: - users are owners of their homedirs (we use owner-based quotas) - users cannot change permissions of their homedirs Is that possible? However, ownership seems to override even "deny change permissions" ACL. Is there any other way to deny access for the user to the other homedirs? Thanks, -- R.V.

by Guest tianc- 0 replies

I have logged into a machine with a user who is only a domain user, and used api RegConnectRegistry and then RegOpenKeyEx to query another machine's registry in the same domain, but RegOpenKeyEx returns access denied. I have tried giving the local administrator and domain administrator credentials using NetUseAdd and WNetAddConnection2, but both cannot work. This only happened in Vista or Windows Server 2008. And only happened when I logged in with a domain user. Could anyone help me? Thanks

Immediate Disable of Terminated Employee
by Guest John Liles- 7 replies

First off, apologies if this subject has been covered before, but I did a search and couldn't find anything. Our situation is this: an employee was terminated today and his/her user account was disabled and password reset. In spite of this, the terminated employee was able to send emails on the company Exchange email up to 30 minutes later. I've been asked to find a way to make disabling the user account have the immediate effect of keeping them from sending emails or doing anything else on the domain. I know that disabling the user account will prevent the user from being able to log on to the domain, but it appears that a disabled user who is alre…

UAC - 2 Ids
by Guest torbar- 6 replies

Evening I have Vista Ultimate with 2 User ids (mine as admin, wife's as user). On my new PC I installed the ASUS utilities under my id. When I log on with my id the ASUS utiities execute with no UAC intervention (load at startup). When my wife logs on (uses account), several ASUS programs (part of aisuite) start up and require a UAC interaction to approve the execution. The request displays in the Task Bar. Is there an option where UAC does not request execution approval under my wife's id? Thanks -- torbar

Cannot take ownership of file
by Guest Peter- 3 replies

Background: I am running Windows Vista Business SP1, with UAC turned off. Problem: I have approximately 8Gb of video files that I moved to an external hard disk to free up space. The files moved successfully, but a copy remains on my main hard disk - and I would like to delete the copy. However, these files are inaccessable. I cannot delete them or take ownership of them (and I am a local administrator). I'm familiar with the standard method of taking ownership in Windows Explorer, and I simply get an access denied error. I cannot see the current security defined on the files as I do not have permission to access these files. Running takeown fro…

It doesn't give me the option of downloading the file, and then using right-click, Run as Administrator. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am running Windows Live One Care, which I think is a great program, but on occasion I have run some other virus or spyware scan that reports I have dangerous files on my computer. I have been unable to find these files on my system. Since Windows Live One Care is not reporting these, I am wondering if they are really there and just what are these things: Backdoor: Win32/NTRoot Backdoor: Win32/SIVUXA Trojan: Caiijing

Visual-Studio severely damages Vista
by Guest Jim Kay- 22 replies

Way back in Nov of 2006, when Vista appeared for download on MSDN, I began testing it. One of the early things I did was install Visual-Studio 2005 with its SP1. I discovered that multiple critical update processes were failing to get access to c:\config.msi (a directory) and I was NOT being prompted by UAC for administrative rights. There were scads of messages about this on the Visual-Studio forum but silence from Microsoft. Every time I update the access rights to that directory, something in Vista/V-S sets those rights back to where they were. Because I did not know the cause of the problem I totally rebuilt the machine and installed my software mor…
