Re: Windows Fails to Start Windows Firewall Service

I am new to this forum, but I have recently encountered this exact same issues with the same parameters that Jacob illustrated. I am running Windows Vista Business (32bit) upgrade over Windows Vista Home Basic on a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416 Laptop. This happened when I installed a DVD ripping program that apparently was not intended for Vista (ImToo DVD to MP4 converter). I received an error message at the completion of the installation that I ignored--not understanding its meaning. I tried using the program which worked the first time I tried it. During my second use of the program within the same instance, my computer did a memory dump followed by a…

UAC into the (Vista) platform was to annoy users

"The reason we put UAC into the (Vista) platform was to annoy users--I'm serious," said Cross" http://www.news.com/Microsoft-Vista-featur..._3-6237191.html I've read this article several times and I'm still not sure what Cross means by forcing independent software vendors (ISVs) to make their code more secure. Is he saying by annoying user that we are to put pressure on these vendors? Opinions welcome.... -- All the best, SG Is your computer system ready for Vista? https://winqual.microsoft.com/hcl/

Help... Mystery Popup Virus?? (0/1)

Hi... Running: WinXP Pro 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600 with all of the automatic updates. IE6 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254IC also with the automatic updates. (Noite...this also happens with Firefox.) This does NOT happen when viewing htm files on my hard drive...only online websites (and not every site...for instance, Sun's Java site seemed immune.) Popups occur randomly...sometimes as straight ads, sometimes as shown in the attached images. (These are shrunk or cropped to keep them small ... and the forst one has red ovals that I added to show the non-full-screen popups.) Sometimes they open an full-screen window...sometimes smaller win…

Vista Home Premium
by Guest AliceZ- 23 replies

I just bought a Toshbia A305 S6825 notebook with Vista Premium sp1 (which I was told had good security programs installed) and someone told me yesterday that the Firewall on Virsta Premium is not (very) effective. They suggested I should use the (new) ZA (which is about 45MB, so they say). They mentioned that they used "ShieldsUP" to test Vista Premium's Firewall and found a "ping" (don't know what that is!) got through. Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions about the Vista Home Premium's Firewall? Or is this just too "hi tech" for me to get worried about now since I just bought the new Toshiba with Vista Home Premium sp1 and since I am a novice a…

Defender
by Guest AliceZ- 6 replies
In my Vista Home Premium SP1 I open the Defender page and in the upper right there is a question mark (?) in a blue circle, and to the right of that there is a "down arrow." If I click on that "down arrow" it will open another small screen that has a line = "update defender." If I click on that, nothing happens. Are we unable to download new updates for Defender from there? Of must we always go to the Windows Update page?

Critical Updates
by Guest AliceZ- 3 replies

I am very used to my WinXPsp2 Critical Updates page, however, finding the Vista Home Premium SP1 a bit confusing. I went to the Windows Update and saw an Update for Defender, which I downloaded. However, I noticed two other updates: #1- Mail Junk E-mail Filter (April 2008) (KB905866) - Recommended (Which I think I should download.) #2- Realtek Network Realtek - Optional (I don't know what this one is. I don't believe I need it. If there is a Realtek program on this notebook, I don't believe I would ever use it. Do I have to download this one?) I saw these two downloads yesterday and again today, so it would appear that they will keep appearing until I…

I had a good post going and hit the wrong button! Okay...I am a medical transcriptionist who works from home. I must use IE for work. I do have firefox which I love but I cannot do searches on Firefox for whatever reason. I always get a "missing link" message. I will give you what has happened, what I have done, and try to be concise about it. When the last Vista/IE updates came out in early April, i downloaded and installed them. Computer came back on, my mouse wouldn't work, not even a cursor would show up. After several hours of trying various things like rebooting in safe mood, I tried to manually roll back my computer, no easy feat without a mouse, an…

How to give non-administrators the ability to reboot

Server 2003 How do I give non-administrators the ability to reboot a server while logged on through remote desktop connection? The people responsible are members of the Power Users group but still can't reboot the server. I changed the local security policy to give them the right to shutdown remotely but that still doesn't do what I'm after.

Hi, I have a user cert set up for autoenrollment. The cert is published in AD and the "Do not automatically reenroll if a duplicate certificate exists in Active Directory" checkbox is checked. The CA is a Windows 2003 Enterprise CA. Credential Roaming is also set up in the environemnt. Autoenrollment and credential roaming seem to be working fine but I do encounter an issue when a workstation is reimaged or the certs are deleted from the user's personal store on a workstation. After one of these occurences the user's personal store never gets a copy of the user's existing certs on that workstation. The only way to populate the store is to have them is…

Installing on Vista
by Guest C. Price- 6 replies

Hello All, Heres the story...I recently purchased a new PC running Vista Home Premium and when I got it home, I wanted to test its graphics, so I downloaded the free PC game, America's Army. When I tried to install, I received an error about ISKernels. When I searched this error, I found that I needed to download some service packs for Invest Sign. When I downloaded these and attempt to install them, I am prompted by Vista to "Enter the Password." Now, when I created my Admin account, I did not enter a password, so I have no clue what password they may mean. While investigating this problem, I have attempted to right-click the files and select "Run As A…

Getting rid of my Certification Authority
by Guest justmark- 7 replies

We don't really use this anyway, although some people did, in the past. I have to decomission the hardware on which the CA lives and for the near-term, have decided to just not establish another. I have a couple of questions: First of all, if somebody, somewhere, has an encrypted folder (they all swear they don't, but I can't go poking around to make sure), will they lose access to their files or will their files simply become unencrypted when I decomission the CA? Secondly, when I look at issued certificates, I see some of my server - most notably, my DCs. I don't know exactly why they've requested certificates, but what will happen to them if I decomi…
