Bitlocker and System Drive Failure
by Guest Quilnux- 2 replies
Afternoon/evening. I am getting ready to implement bitlocker on both my system drive and 2 other volumes. I have a concern before continuing. In the event that I would ever have a hard drive failure (hopefully not for a very long time) and I had to reload the OS on a new hard drive, would there be a way for me to recover the data from the other 2 volumes on the other physical drive once the OS is up and running? The reason I ask is that I have backups on the secondary hard drive that I plan to encrypt along with the system drive and I want to be sure that in a hard drive failure that I will be able to get access to the backups from a new installation of V…

Software installation problems with Vista

First of all, my apologies if crossposting is not acceptable or if I'm not posting to the right group. Please let me know. Comp: Toshiba Satellite M200 laptop OS: Windows Vista Home Basic (without SP1 installed) OK - A friend's computer. She hasn't used it in the six months since I helped her buy it, so it hasn't been online. Before I go online to download updates like SP1, I want to install a firewall. I've downloaded Comodo's latest free firewall for Win32 as well as various freeware antivirus and antispyware software. The problem is trying to install ANY of these programmes. When I double-click the installation file a window pops up telling me th…

Port 137/138 accesses within home network
by Guest AndyHancock- 5 replies
A few newly installed applications required a modification of firewall rules, which prompted me to clean up the convolution of rules that I've amassed over the years. Afterward, I started to get regular outbound UDP connections from "SYSTEM" to 192.168.1.255, ports 137-138. Much web searching ensued. It could be bad (http:// www.linklogger.com/UDP137.htm) or just IP/name resolutions (http:// www.iss.net/security_center/advice/Exploits/Ports/137/default.htm and others). This is a very simple home network, consisting of a DSL modem/router, and zero to two laptops connected via LAN cable to WiFi (either Windows 2000 or WindowsXP). One page visited was http:/…

Blocking executables from certain drives/paths.
by Guest aptgetmoo- 2 replies
Hello. I've just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. I used to create policies on my old laptop(XP Pro) using gpedit.msc to block all .exe files from running except of those in C: partition(my Windows partition). I did this to prevent me(or whoever using my laptop) from accidentally run viruses from usb drives, well there is no need for me to run .exe files from there anywhere. Well since there is no gpedit.msc in Vista Home Premium, how do I do this from the registry?

I had something come up on my screen warning me about 2 trojans and I need to install XP antivirus protection..is this part of windows? It is trojan MYtob.mailer and Zlob.z. Is this for real? It has the microsoft logo, and looks official, but I'm always a bit skeptical of these things..I was afraid to click on install, not knowing what it was. I thought it would have already been installed. I have Vista. Thanks,

Seeking firewall rules for Diskeeper 2008 Home edition
by Guest AndyHancock- 0 replies
I'm trialing the above named defragmenter, which requires that firewall access be provided (http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home/ techspecs.asp) (which in itself seems a bit odd, but be that as it may). I haven't been able to find online the details for firewall rules. For Kerio Personal Firewall (and I suspect most firewalls will be similar), these details are: Protocol: TCP, UDP, ICMP, or other Local port type: Any port, single port, port range, or a list of ports Application (full path of executable) Remote address type: Single address, network/mask, network/range, or custom address group Remort port type (same choices as local port…
