Network security general discussion
by Guest Dave Mc- 1 reply

I am in the process of deciding how to allow remote user access to our network. I think I want to set up a VPN with both router-to-router IPSEC tunnels for remote offices and a few PPTP tunnels for users from home. I don't want to go crazy with security (not sure that's avoidable !). My basic question is: It seems all the tunnels/encryption/??? in the world aren't going to do any good if I don't have really strong passwords everywhere. In other words, if some can crack into one or my router's setup, they could create their own tunnel, etc. Am I missing something or is it basically true that anyone's network security is only as good as their weakest p…

SetupAPI functions called from user application allowed?
by Guest Jim H- 0 replies

Forgive me if this has been asked thousands of times but I've done searches and haven't found an answer. We have an application that has it's own updater that works by going out to a local server (not the internet) on the network and checks for updates each time the program starts. If an update is found the files are copied over and installed using a .inf file and win32 setupAPI calls. Some of these files are programs and some are data. In Vista are administrative permissions required for the setupAPI calls to complete successfully? I know they are needed for the initial install, but what about for updates? Also, is it different when the calls are overwriti…

saving a specific permission for porting
by Guest NetScorpion- 0 replies

I am involved with a gaming site that was initially created using Real Basic. When running Vista, the locally executed user client code for our lobbys require the UAC to be turned off or a "RegistryAccessErrorException was not handled" error occurs. I have discovered that right clicking our folder in hkey_classes_root and manually setting the "Users..." permission to allow full control will fully resolve this issue. So my question is, how can I save this setting so I might share it with others to allow them to benefit from it without sending them into regedit? An exported key does not seem to hold this setting, and I have found not other way to change…

IE 6 won't accept signed ActiveX control
by Guest Bryan Johnson- 2 replies

My company ships a signed ActiveX control. On some machines running Windows 2k3 and IE 6, when the ActiveX control is downloaded, an error dialog appears titled "Security Alert - Driver Installation", with the message "The driver software you are installing has not been properly signed...". This seems odd because the .CAB file does not contain drivers, so it would seem that IE is somehow using the wrong signature verification method. I have verified via "signtool verify /pa /v" that the .CAB file is correctly signed with a valid certificate. So why doesn't IE agree? Any thoughts or pointers appreciated.

Anti-virus suggestions
by Guest smicale- 3 replies

My corporation is currently using Symantec Endpoint Security and after uninstalling their product I have noticed a huge performance boost in my 64 system. I have heard from a lot of users on our network complain about how slow their computers are. I have spoken with Symantec support and had them tweak our software, but still systems are slow. I would like some suggestions as to what others are using and whether I should steer clear of Symantec's product. Thanks! -Scott

Hello everybody, I've been using Windows Vista for 3 months, since i've bought my notebook. Last week I got a problem running Ad-Aware 2007 and since then it doesn't work anymore. The same thing occours with Skype. I tried reinstalling everything with both but it didn't work at all. Now I can't execute them. I don't have any virus, spywares, malwares or something like that at the moment. Please help me, the Ad-Aware is very important for my security. I know that it's a windons vista community but it includes also the performance of it. Thank you all, Denis.

I'm assuming that you all still have the same problem. I experienced the same problem a couple days ago and I have found a way around it, or so it works for me. Another benefit from all that MCSE training I suppose. Here is the problem that I had\have I setup 3 machines on a basic wireless router. One machine is Windows Vista Ultimate x64, and the other two are Windows XP x32. The primary propose for the two XP machines are for file storage and for security (DMZ). The Vista machine was designed solely as the primary workstation. The Vista is setup like this… 3x 200GB on Raid 0 (primary drive) 1x 1TB SATA2 (second drive) And the primary XP m…

RDP/TS Single-sign-on with credentails delegation
by Guest Ondrej Sevecek- 0 replies

Hello, I am currently investigating the "delegate default credentials" policy for TS connection (TS SSO) from a domain user. The behaviour is, that the user generates itself a kerberos ticket for TERMSRV/tsserver.domain.local. Here its ok. But what is the actuall essence of the following TS login? Will the client pass down the ticket to the terminal server OR will it then use cleartext login and password (say after this first place pre-authentication by using kerberos)?? Previous TS servers were able to accept only cleartext login and password (inside the RDP/SSL tunnel certainly). So did this change? ondra.

Ecnrypted Windows Vista Backup? (not EFS)
by Guest Julian- 1 reply
Hi I am trying to use Windows Vista backup but I want to save my backups encrypted. That is a normal function provided by most backup tools nowadays, but Windows Vista seems to lack that. Now, I tried to solve this problem by using TrueCrypt to create a logical on-the-fly encrypted drive and try to save my backup there. When I try to setup a backup, the logical drive, is not listed as one of the possible backup destination. Is there anyway to use the backup tool and encrypt the backup files or should I should skip using windows vista backup tool?
