How can I verify that Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is indeed disabled on my Vista (Business Edition) laptop? I`m not sure where this or other VPN-related information would show up on my network connections, if it were enabled. Thanks, Alan

managing user rights on vista
by Guest sobriquet- 5 replies

Hello. Can anyone explain how to enable that users are able to download and execute files, so they can install programs, while preventing access to system folders like "C:\program files" and "C:\windows"? Right now I have succeeded in configuring a user account so they can write to the hard disk in most locations except system folders, but when users try to run a program (in order to install it in a folder where they are allowed to write files), they are still asked for a password. So I want to disable that password somehow so users can run and install programs without requiring an administrator password. Kind regards and thanks in advance for any suggestions,…

HELP - Remote Vista administration and monitor activity
by Guest Neil Jones- 3 replies
Hi, I would like to know how to remotely administer and monitor activity on a Vista Ultimate system. My daughter and I have Vista Ultimate boxes. She lives with her mother in the midwest while I am on the east coast. She does go to myspace web site to chat with her classmates in school. However, I am getting more and more concerned (especially after the Florida teens attack their classmate). I would like to monitor her online activities. I know Windows has Remote Desktop on XP version. Is there something like that for Vista? How do I configure Remote Desktop to limit connections only to each others box? How do log her online activity? Is there any…

by Guest Sirtokalott- 0 replies

I use Live Messenger and a file sent to me was blocked. I have a wireless adapter and connect to my neighbours router (yes she gave me the access code) and I ussualy have a wireless connection logo in the system tray. When I started up the pc the other night I had an extra icon showing a cable connection to another computer. I also now have a modem installed in device manager. I think it is my neighbours computer which I am connecting to but aint to sure as neither of us is experts. The pc is also running much slower now. I'd love to know of anyway of identifying a deliberate attack from someone. Here's what the modem log says. 04-06-2008 21:59:19…

Instant Message Security

I use AOL IM and gmail at work through a PC using Microsoft OS connected to a company server. Does my company have the ability to monitor or record my IM's and personal gmails without my knowledge? In the AOL settings I chose not to have my IM's logged, but someone told me if I use IM on my company computer and it goes through their servers, they can log and view my chats -- and this would apply to gmail as well. Thanks

Firewall rules to allow Windows 2000 updates
by Guest AndyHancock- 3 replies

Where can one find firewall rules to allow Windows 2000 updates? Specifically, which applictions will be reaching out, input or output, the type of access/data (TCP, UDP, etc.), which executable will be doing this, the swath of IP addresses which it could contact, and the ports? I've got my automatic updates to only notify me, not download and install. I do that manually. Thanks!

by Guest Jeff Dieterle- 0 replies

I have the same problem as this poster stated on 3/16, except I installed PCTools Spyware doctor. I can't find anything in Spyware Doctor that relates to starting Windows Firewall. It's starts ok I just have to do it everytime I boot the pc. There was only one reply to the op below and it didn't lead me to a solution. I have an Acer notebook and I have just uninstalled Norton 360 after the 90 day trial expired and installed alternative AV software. Now upon start up the Security Centre reports that the Windows firewall is turned off but when I look at the services I can see the firewall is set to start automatically and is saying that the service is alread…

by Guest SG- 16 replies

C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\FLBPKKMMZXYZ.exe This rouge process is listed is Services. I have managed to Disable it, however I'd like to remove entirely. I found it in the Registry, but I cannot find a way to remove it. I've done everything I know even in the Safe Mode and it will not let you delete, modify or whatever. It has no Dependencies listed, the Service and Display names are the same "FLBPKKMMZXYZ" When running Regedit I ran it as Admin, I tried to set permissions on the Branch and was denied. Here is how it's listed..... Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_FLBPKKMMZXYZ\0000]…

UAC Corrupted in SP1?
by Guest BirdMan- 9 replies
After installing SP1, my user account was changed to standard user and many of the programs (including IE7) would not work properly AFTER I changed my user account back to Administrator. The other accounts that were Administrator and a new Administrator account would still not allow IE7 to work properly unless "run as Administrator". When I turn UAC off, the problems go away. How can I fix this??

AVG Antivirus was removed before I recently installed Vista SP1 on a Home Premium, HP Pavilion dv6253cl laptop. Now when I check Malware Protection in Security Center I have a green light with the message "Norton Internet Security reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on" under "Virus Protection". I haven't knowingly installed any Norton products and can't find any trace of any on the system except as noted above. I don't believe there is any downloading of virus definitions taking place. Do I have antivirus protection? The laptop is about a year old and came from HP via Costco with Vista Home Premium installed. DDB
