access denied, no security tab
by Guest KevPed- 3 replies

I'm running windows server 2003 and cannot access a folder (access denied message). When I right click and properties the folder, there is no security tab (only General, ,Customize and NFS sharing). This is not XP, so the simple file sharing doesnt exist, and its obviously an NTFS drive as its windows server I'm running. the parent folders and all other folders are fine, just one folder out on its own not letting anyone play with it.... Any ideas on what can cause this or how it can be fixed???

strange log on username appearing
by Guest Discoduck- 3 replies

x-no-archive: Well this is a strange one. Every now and then when i go to log onto something (ie groups) when I hit a certain letter a username that is meaningless comes up for me (ie "username@domain.com"). Since I live alone there is NO chance that someone used it and my computer remembered it. Furthermore I delete all filed and passwords cached, now & then. What is even stranger is the domain name contained in the address DOESN'T EXIST according to godaddy or internic. Thoughts? Ideas as to what this is about?

read only attribute
by Guest Not just paranoid- 7 replies

I believe there was a recent Automatic Update loaded to my computer, and today I noticed that EVERY file and folder on my computer is now set with the READ ONLY attribute. Is this somehow considered a good thing for security ? If this is something to do with a security update, can I disable it ? I really do have files that I need to change frequently. If it is not a security update, is it some sort of weird attack on my computer ?

by Guest Kris- 1 reply

I am looking for some honest help! I have a HP Pavilion ze4500 notebook, which I received for free from my father in-law, and it has more problems than I know what to do with. I started by just trying to update Windows and upgrade to Internet Explorer. I have so many popups it's not even funny. I can barely get anything done. So I went and purchased Norton Anti-Virus 2008, and it is telling me I need to download the Service Pack 2. When I try to download that, I then get an error # 0x80072ee7. I can not for the life of me get this problem solved, I am not that computer smart, and so I am looking for some assistance. I desperately need to get someth…

I searched this folder on the internet but couldn't find any information about it. It is located under C:/ and it contains "mrt.exe" and "mrtstub.exe". Is there someone who has this same unknown folder in his computer who can explain to me its function, if it is legitimate or not?

Unknown Directory

Gentlemen, Perhaps I am paranoid, but it upset me a lot when I see an unknown and unexpected directory (C:\TVTOS) which refuses to allow exploration. No only is not accessible, it has 0 bytes, 0 folders, is read only and also applied to files in folder (which there are none, if the statement is believable), is Hidden, does not display a current owner ("unable to display current owner"), and refuses any attempt to change ownership, auditor or effective permission or surrender to "take ownership" Is the kind of challenge wordy of Dirty Harry. Is this a planted object for something felonious? Any clues or suggestions' other than "let it live"? -- Dr. R…

Hi I have a back-up programme that is being blocked by Widows Defender and I have to unblock it every time I power on. The Windows Defeder Help tells me "The next time Windows Defender alerts you about the software, on the Action menu in the Alert dialog box, click Always Allow. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation." But I cannot find the action menu in the alert box of Windows Defender. The only menu I found are - Remove or disable - Unblock - help. When using software explorer in Widows defender, I can see the software but the button "enable" remains inactive. How …

So Are Viruses Gone?
by Guest W. Watson- 4 replies

I don't hear as much news about threatening viruses as a year or two ago. My ISP's virus and spam checker seems to have done a very good job. The spam checker does sometimes block stuff I want, but it's pretty decent. What's up? What's the big change that seems to have gotten these matters under control? -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

My pc will not allow me to turn on my firewall. It tells me the group policy has been set to disallow me to change the settings. I am the only person who uses this pc and it is in my home. I have ran avast anti-virus and found a trojan in my iexplore.exe and service.exe files. I have attempted to remove them repeatedly and then run another scan but they keep returning. I would like to get my security center back on and under my control. Can someone please help me? I am operating with Windows Vista Home Premium. Thank you

Creating a User Account Password
by Guest rbaiocco- 0 replies

I was helping a friend set up Vista on his new computer and I thought it would be a trivial thing to create a password for the only existing account "OWNER-adminstrator" but Windows would not allow me to do it. I went to CONTROL PANEL - USER ACCOUNTS - CREATE A PASSWORD FOR YOUR ACCOUNT and no matter what I entered an error message returned "WINDOWS CANNOT CHANGE PASSWORD" (I don't believe there is any password currently assigned except "") Strangely when I went to Windows Help, it mentioned that under CONTROL PANEL - USER ACCOUNTS there should be a link called CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD which I did not find??? I thought I would try to assign a password …

by Guest halwizardoflittle- 1 reply

Windows defender is giving me an alert that reads as SUBJ line says whenever I go to connect or disconnect to a network and it lists MSWSOCK.dll. What change was made? I click on the bubble that pops up and it either goes away or the configfree selection box pops up. this has been happening since I installed the Winows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330) update a few days ago. what did it (the service pack 1) do and how do I get the alert to stop popping up all the time.

Looking for an encryption software
by Guest Pete- 1 reply

I am looking for an encryption tool to encrypt the exnternal harddrive and network drive. Here is what I want. When I copy the files to the external harddrive, the files are encrypted on the fly. The applications on my machine can read/write to the drive seamlessly. They don't even aware that the drive is encrypted. I don't have to enter the passcode to set up the encrypted drive when the machine reboots. When I or someone take the drive and put in another computer, he has to enter the passcode to see the contents of the encrypted drive. I found a free software called TrueCrypt. It almost does what I want to do. But I have to "mount" the drive ever…
