The Difference Between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus.(spywareblockers)
by Guest spyware.blockers@gmail.com- 2 replies

spyware blockers, http://syubrawi.com/spyware-blockers Adware, spyware and computer virus share some similarities, one of which is that all three are major nuisances for computer users. Let's differentiate the three. Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What they do is that they create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups. This is why spyware are usually frowned upon and greatly avoided. They are more intrus…

Notification from DEP?
by Guest Ray- 7 replies
Is data execution protection supposed to notify me when it stops a program from running? The only "notice" I get is that nothing happens when I click a program's shortcut. Now that I've learned the signs (or lack thereof) of DEP in action I know when to tell it to allow a certain program, but it seems like it should let me know about the problem. -- Ray (remove the Xs to reply)

by Guest Mikek- 8 replies

When I open the Task Manager and look at the Performance tab I can see that my CPU usage fluctuates between 0 and 30% every 5 seconds so that the history shows a graph line similar to a mountain range with mountains of equal height. If I disconnect from the internet there is CPU usage at the same time intervals but no more than 5%. I have looked at the Processes tab (sorted by CPU) to try and see what is using the processor and the order of usage is changing every 1 second but the processes at the top apart from System Idle Process and taskmge.exe generally seems to be: iexplore.exe System Helphost.exe helpsvc.exe I am using XP and IE7 I run M…

ScanDisk and CHKDSK will not complete
by Guest Don Phillipson- 3 replies

Problem is ultraslow function of a Dell PC under WinXP (SP2). ScanDisk of C:\ would not complete and I was surprised to see its parent console appeared to report one small FAT32 drive (no drive letter) 30 Mb normal drive C: NTFS about 38 Gb. I do not know what the unlettered drive is supposed to be, possibly an artifact of either the Dell preinstal process or Norton security system. I have disabled Norton (as likely to interfere with diagnosis and cleanup.) DOS CHKDSK /F reports 1. Fixed 2 corrupt attribute records. 2. Cannot continue in read-only mode. What does this mean? MS KB seems no help at all (finds only two instances of "read-only," both rela…

Gurus, In troubleshooting for MS support recently on a case I opened with them, I was told to disable tcp chimney (since I was running Windows Server 2003 SP2) prior to capturing a netmon trace. I am not sure why I had to disable tcp chimney prior to capturing a netmon trace let alone what tcp chimney even is. Any ideas? -- Spin
