DELETE files FOREVER?
by Guest 8-Ball- 8 replies
Ok, so when I delete something it goes to the recycle bin. When I delete something from the recycle bin it is gone forever. -THINK AGAIN- I deleted somthing from the recycle bin and got it back a few days later...I also found a ton so stuff I was told was "deleted" forever by Windows. I brought it back (using some uber-simple free program) just to see it it was really there (not just a file name) I was able to open it and read it as well as continue to edit it... This is PROBLEMATIC; some of these files contain sensitive data such as SSNs', medical info, and other stuff that I had believed to be "deleted" and wasn't. Why is it still on there and how do I …

How did this Trojan appear?
by Guest wrkg_onit@yahoo.com- 3 replies

My system configuration: Win XP SP2 with all updates, firewall on, behind a router. AVG anti-virus. At the time of the incident I had several Opera browser windows open, and pointed to respectable financial sites like finance.yahoo. Outlook Express was loaded and may or may not have been downloading email. Microsoft Excel was the only other user application running. What happened was AVG suddenly reported an attempt by "Trojan horse downloader Zlob.ABQ" to load into one of my system restore subdirectories. How can this happen without me clicking on an attachment or popup, etc.?

System Mechanic 7 Professional
by Guest someone- 7 replies
My local paper has a column today concerning System Mechanic 7 Professional, praising it very highly. It diagnoses the PC, backs up the registry, gets rid of clutter, fixes security problems and defrags the hard drive. The anti-virus program checks for the latest protection every hour, has a firewall, and a Search and Recover. It works in the background to monitor the PC without slowing it down. The cost is $39 plus $6 shipping. It did not state whether that is a one-time charge or an annual charge, but it did state that you get free anti-virus updates for a year, indicating possibly that it is an annual charge. Does anyone have any comment concernin…

Buffer Overrun possibly caused by Norton Systemworks?
by Guest PHGray- 6 replies
Hello, This is a first for me, getting a "buffer overrun detected" message. So, after researching it, it appears it could possibly be a security issue, but I'm not sure if that's the case as I see online that Quicktime and IE seem to cause buffer overrun issues in some cases, so I'm wondering if it could be software related. Couldn't find much in that regard as far as Nortons goes. I did contact them, but have yet to hear back. I have Nortons SystemsWorks Standard 2008 installed (and after reading some previous posts, I take it a lot of people here don't care for Nortons, so maybe I need to remove it, not sure.) Regardless, here's what happened. Nort…

IE flashes "Windows Installer" on startup
by Guest BobF- 5 replies
Everytime I start Internet Explorer the screen flashes 20 or 30 windows with title "Windows Installer". After that, it works fine. This began happening after installing Vista64 with SP1. The first time I started IE after the install UAC prompted me about 30 times to allow Google toolbar, Flash, and HP to give administrative access. Every subsequent time I just get the flashing. Long ago I relocated the folders in my User folder to the D: drive. I'm suspicous this is a security thing perhaps related to permissions of the re-located folders, or a missing relocated folder, or one in an unexpected place but I haven't been able to figure it out. Any suggestio…

Need Help With IPs to Authorize Windows Update
by Guest Will- 17 replies

I'm having some problems with firewall authorizations for Windows Update access in a DMZ. In general, I have had good luck getting access to Windows Update when you authorize passage of HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP to these networks: 131.107.0.0 / 16 207.46.0.0 / 16 64.4.0.0 / 18 65.52.0.0 / 14 In addition, I normally authorize these URLs for both http: and https: .microsoft.com windowsupdate.microsoft.com .windowsupdate.microsoft.com download.windowsupdate.com The problem I am having is that occasionally the DNS name "download.windowsupdate.com" resolves to some IPs on a huge network from the Limelight load balancing farm. When the client behind…

VBscript not UAC and IE7 friendly
by Guest Deleauvive- 1 reply

Hello Vista heads style_emoticons/ , I wanted to post here on vistax64 forums about my findings, related to VB scripting, with Windows Vista in mind. Firstly, I consider mysef a self-made power user of Windows products mostly for multimedia tasks, so I am not sure my voice will be heard, amongst IT experts and developers. Also, I need to make something clear : There are still many websites where one can download VB scripts and the likes. I don't mind that much that the scripts were not tested with Windows Vista, but if you maintain such web sites, please make a note stating that the methods of invoking objects have considerably evolved. Here is the test I…

detecting lame passwords
by Guest G- 9 replies

I know that the standard disclaimers apply: running certain security auditing tools without permission may be criminally prosecutable, and at least grounds for termination. With that happy thought in mind, what tools would you recommend for finding who has a weak password? I've explained that Winter07 is not a good password, but since Windows will accept it, I think that some kind of auditing is my next prudent step. Recommended products for preventing this in the first place are welcome as well. But presenting a user with their password as evidence that they chose a weak password seems to be hard to argue with. My assumption is that such a tool would …

Sorry for the multi-post (previously posted to the vista general group with no answer and I forgot to also cross-post to these maintenance and security groups). Suddenly when I open Task Scheduler I get the following error message: "An error has occurred for task Reminders - XXXXXXXX. Error message: The specified account name is not valid." (XXXXXXX represents my account name and it IS my VALID account name.) Can someone guide me in the steps necessary to get rid of this error? I Bleed Blue and Gold GO BEARS!

Windows Vista's security features: One year later
by Guest love_foreveri@yahoo.com- 0 replies

TechTarget reports: "When Vista was released to manufacturing, Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin told the press that the number one reason for upgrading to Vista is that it's far more secure than previous versions of Windows operating systems. In the year since Microsoft released Windows Vista to corporations, and just under a year since the OS was released to consumers, Vista's new security features have drawn both praise and criticism. In this article, I take an objective look at security features that seem to be drawing the most attention." This a good article that talks about some of Windows Vista security features (User Account Control [uAC], Windows Sec…
