I have an unknown running process on my computer called "Andrea RT Filters Service". It runs as a Windows servce on start up. I googled it and come up with "Andrea Electronics Corporation". When I contacted them to see if I could get some information about the application. they replied that the do not own or distrubute any application by this name. I have stopped the service and disabled it and there seems to be no side effects. Can someone please tell me what this process is?

I'm planning on purchasing several laptops for our firm with Vista Business installed. There is no network and all laptops will work in stand-alone mode. Is there a way I can use the built in Administrator account to prohibit the users from installing any new software while at the same time allowing upgrades and/or patches to software that is already installed? Thanks for any thoughts, input, etc. [also posted in Administration Accounts and Passwords, sorry for the double/cross post, was not sure where this belonged]

I need a free antivirus program that I can leave disabled and one that I don't have to disable everytime I start up the ol laptop. I'm using Vista and I have tried AVG, AntiVir, and Avast!, none of which will let me permanently disable on startup. I need an antivirus program (who doesn't?), but I do not need one running all the time. Any suggestions?

by Guest krzysiek- 2 replies

Hi I just found that secure desktop doesn't working as it should ( please correct me if I'm wrong ;] ) I thing that secure desktop has a hole.. If You run priviledged application You can switch to other window using alt+tab and UAC will be minimized style_emoticons/ I don't think is should be like that... I didn't tried yet, if is possible to send any messages to that window from other application, if Yes I think it is not a small hole, becouse programs can gives some permission to run priviledged applications.. I made small screen capute which shows that, but unfortunally when UAC works then capturing doesn't work, so You can see only blinking icon on…

Is there a utility that takes converts the very hard to read security descriptor format SDDL and converts it to a human readable format? For example, you can look at the DACL on the Windows Firewall service with the command: sc sdshow SharedAccess This gives the human unfriendly output (for example): D:(D;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;NU)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY) I would like to find a utility that I could feed the above string to as input and have it output a parsed and easier to understand version to the DACL. -- Will

I am sorry I don't know the name of the trojan, just the file it seems to have infected. My anti-vir (AVIRA) software has detected it a few times and I delete it, only to find it reoccuring again and again. I am dealing with this issue of a trojan that my Anti-Vir software continues to inform me about when I run any spyware programs like Lavasoft or Spybot. I delete the file with the Anti-Vir, but it seems to keep popping up. I think this is a new one because the google search I did on it says 'March 04, 2008'...lucky me. So what do I do about it? Right now I am running Anti-Vir full system check in Safe mode - taking forever 2 hours already and only at 10%…

System Restore Points not available
by Guest Terry G- 13 replies

When I access the system properties box, then click on the system protection tab, it starts to search for available disks. It continues to search indefinitely. I'm unable to access any of the features on this tab: system restore or create. I've heard this has to do with the new updates. Is this true, and is something being done to fix it?

Disable driver signing in Vista 64bit
by Guest Chris Barnes- 5 replies

I am trying to get VMware Server running on my Vista Enterprise 64bit machine. The install goes along fine until the very end where Windows complains about 5 drivers as being 'unsigned'. In previous versions of Windows I could simply tell the install to go ahead and all would be fine. Apparently the 64bit version of Vista isn't so accommodating. Is there a way I can spoof these drivers so that Vista thinks they are signed (simply turn this off)? And yes, VMWare knows about this problem. They don't seem concerned as they simply say "VMware Server is not supported on Vista. You have to pay for Workstation instead". Assinine as Server is suppor…
