I have a Westell Versalink 327w modem from ATT. It has a hard wired firewall in it. So I have turned off the Windows Vista Firewall. BUT Windows Vista repeatedly keeps on asking me to turn it's firewall on. This is very annoying and I would like to disable it. How can I do that?

Security causing mail problems
by Guest SStone- 11 replies

Cannot reply, forward or send attachments. Have worked on this for 2 days within the Windows Mail Forum. Something is causing a delay in getting mail to the server. This appears to have something to do with security. Has anyone seen a resolution? Details - Unable to send mail problem was sporadic. Had Norton 2007. Took it in to tech support for service and they upgraded to 2008. At forum suggestion, deleted Norton and used the symantec utility to remove the remaining pieces. Replaced Norton with CA Suite. One person thought the Norton proxy may not be able to be removed. My ISP is RoadRunner high speed over cable. Have checked all setting w/RR. Inb…

How to find detected "hijacker" source
by Guest Harris- 6 replies

RE: repeated "Hijacker" detections: StopZilla is repeatedly finding two "MakeMeSearch.com" "Hijacker" infections and 4 "System Policies.Disable Registry" occurrences. I remove them, and within a few days StopZilla is again blocking & detecting these same infections. Can I assume these are real attempts to put viruses on change my registry to hijack my system? How do I determine where they are coming from? My wife and I both use the internet, but don't access anything other than legitimate commercial business sites. Any suggestion on how to find the source of these infection detections would be appreciated. Harris (Using XP on an e-machi…

UAC & WMP
by Guest haydn parker- 2 replies

Anyone any ideas about following... Vista Home Premium - WMP 11. Haven't used wmp for some time but I know I didn't have this problem previously. Logged in as Admin. Click start-programs-media player and 'nothing' happens. In TaskManager I see that wmplayer.exe starts and immediately terminates. Oh wonder, using 'run as admin' I get the continue prompt and wmp starts. This doesn't help much as I don't have that option if I want to view a video in the browser(which is how I discovered the problem). So the work around is switch off UAC. But that can't be the answer. Why don't I get a prompt when starting wmp normally? -- hp

P2P highwayman gets four years for ID theft
by Guest BoaterDave- 1 reply

A Seattle man who admitted using file-sharing programs to pinch personal information on 50 people as part of an ID theft scam has been jailed for four years. Gregory Kopiloff, 35, pleaded guilty to mail fraud, computer hacking and aggravated identity theft offences at a hearing before the US District Court in Seattle in November. As part of a plea bargaining agreement, prosecutors dropped a second aggravated ID theft rap, an offence punishable on conviction by a mandatory two years behind bars in addition to any other sentence a convict might face. The judge called Kopiloff "a highwayman in the virtual world," AP reports. "People were traveling by an…

I realise that this question is a bit loaded given so many different opinions but you guys know best. I have read some previous postings but they go back a bit. Which antivirus (looking at bitdefender, NOD32, Karpensky... in their current version) provides best performance, checking & speed? I now run AVG 8 & wish to change or should I? I have read many reviews & it seems that Bitdefender is the one on top.

EFS Issue
by Guest blankmonkey- 3 replies
Ok, here's the thing. Back in the day we didn't use efs, and our first DC failed and was replaced. Only later did we find out the DRA cert was on this server, and we now needed to make a new one to get EFS to work. No problem, we created a DRA account, and made it and admin with the DRA cert. But a side effect of this is that we would have to go in and renew the cert in two years. So I caefully wrote down the password, and forgot about it for one year and 10 months. So now I go back, and I try to log into the DRA account, and it won't let me in. In spite of the fact I carefully wrote down the password in detail, it keeps telling me "The system can'…

IE7 not resolving after SP1 install
by Guest Tom McNally- 4 replies
After Vista SP1 installed a couple nights ago, browing to a website has come to a crawl, taking 10 secs or more to load a simple page (if at all), and it would appear that the DNS is not resolving correctly (I always see the IP address in the lower left of Explorer -- not the resolved name). I disabled phishing filtering and defender but that didn't resolve the issue. Am on a simple Win2003 server SP1 domain, running DNS for a public website, and the usual ADS, DHCP, etc. A hardware firewall acts as my perimeter DNS router -- routing web 80 requests from the cable modem to the server's internal address on the network. Vista firewall is disabled. This …
