Has MSE been updated for 2012? How can I check mine?
by Guest DrDOS1953- 0 replies

I recently read from this forum the following article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372364,00.asp (note that MSE is not included... most likely because there is not a 2012 version yet... MS doesn't necessarily do major updates on a schedule... they do them when they're ready.) Is this accurate (it was written Dec 2011)? Since it's March, do I have the 2012 version now? My About screen says Copyright 2010. I used to work at a PTO. Doesn't that change each year? I read the article and page 2 talks about Free A/V programs but doesn't review MSE. I recently switched to Avast! after using MSE for years as well as using NAV/Symantec (which I liked but n…

I am running an E machine with MSEssentials and Windows NT. MSE has worked properly for many months. Now it shows me an amber warning indicating the machine has not had a scan in a while. But I did two full scans yesterday. I have uninstalled software, then downloaded new software but problem persists. When I downloaded another copy last week it worked properly for a day or so. Now it's on the fritz again. Can anyone please help me? Continue reading...

Give user permission to start/stop ONE service
by Guest kkeane- 0 replies

I have a situation where I want users on a Windows XP (domain member) to have very restricted privileges - but the users need to be able to start and stop one particular Windows service. I do not want users to be able to start or stop any other services - just one particular one. Background info: this is in a school setting in a lab environment. The computers need to be locked down as much as we can to reduce the risk of viruses etc. But the lab software the students are using for their project has a service that they need to be able to stop (and start, but stopping is more important). Is there a way to give such a very selective permission? Continue reading...

My hotmail is now in Arabic. I want to delete this account.
by Guest DonnaHardcastle- 0 replies

My hotmail account was hacked and my hotmail page is now in Arabic. I was to delete this hotmail account completely. I had a pop-up to update SkyDrive which I did not do. This is one of the words I did recognize on my now Arabic hotmail page. We thought my hotmail was hacked about a week ago and we changed the password immediately. But, now it is sending out emails again to people in my contacts and my hotmail page is in another language. So, my husband thinks it may be a virus. I have a Macintosh with no virus protection. We didn't think Macs needed it. Continue reading...

by Guest Andy on Cape- 0 replies

I purchased a computer from Dell in early January (three months ago), and for some reason after I run System Mechanic it fixes many registry keys, which ends up shutting down all Microsoft 2010 products in a matter of two seconds..(Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.) The dll files get corrupted and as a result Dell technicians have set me back to factory settings too many times and also had me buy Windows 7 professional after selling me Windows 7 Home version first. I have, after three months lost any hope that a Dell technician can help me. All they do is like a parrot, over and over again, uninstall, reinstall, set to factory settings, and remove software tech install so…

Color coding folders (email)
by Guest Chris Barnes- 0 replies

Environment is Win7, Outlook 2010, using Exchange 2010 - talking about in Mail only here.... I have a user who has a couple hundred folders (many of them are nested). She wants to be able to color-code some of those folders. I have searched and found many other people asking for the same thing - but thus far have found no way to do it (either within OL natively or via a plugin). Surely there has to be a way to do this. It just can't be that hard (after all, thunderbird does it). Continue reading...

Losing access to file shares daily
by Guest ScottStairs- 0 replies

I'm working with a number of clients who are only noticing this problem on Windows XP machines. They have a program that maps a UNC path to a drive letter (for the users to access on their own) and then proceeds to use the UNC to access these files. (it basically runs the command "net use v: \\computername\sharename" for the user and then tries to access a few files on \\computername\sharename) Lately, they have been running into a large number of problems with their XP machines using this program. The program works fine for a day, but the next day, it is unable to connect to this same UNC path for file sharing. It returns an error about not being able to find the s…
