I've been taking a break from atvs, forums and wrenching for a while lately... Now I'm getting back into my 250R's and 450R's and have kinda hit a wall. The "no fun no more" wall. My 07 450R is a Demon SB/SS pump gas "sleeper" with right at 60 hp in it's current tune. The bike is fast, and the suspension works great for what I want it to do, but is boring to ride. I've gotten accustom to the power, and am now looking for more options. I'm wanting more power for the strip, but am curious about cost vs. benefit of going to a 480 or bigger. What would you do?

Here's some of the toys, loaded up and heading to the dunes... And one of my "stock" 450R, taking a break from some Southern Oklahoma trails. -
Thank you for the welcome. I just realized that my horsepower and torque readings were reported with SAE conversion factors, but most shops report them in Standard STD or STP measurements. I asked for an updated printout, which Randy will be emailing. Does anybody have any experience with the conversions?

Thanks for all the compliments, this is a great site, without all the BS of some of the others. I've tried the Ohtsu 501's with good results, but these Dunlops are the ones Rocky Mountain was selling at one time for very cheap. They do okay, but really spin compared to the factory 450R/Raptor tires or the 501's. If I'm going to be playing mostly at the strip, I swap on my Pro Wedge 2's or even Pro Wedge 1's.

Oh, I know... This one is a handful to ride (was way worse with a more bottom-end cam), but I really ride my 250R or 330R more. Both of them have the suspension to work well at these power levels. The 450 was just an experiment, trying different cams and parts to attempt to ease the "hit" on the tires, and wheelie less. It really starts to pull about 40 ft. out from the starting line. It's really just a trail cruiser, and sleeper drag bike (or as much as it can be with a stock swingarm). I wish I knew of some stock-ish tires that would hook like my Pro-Wedges.

Thanks! 450cc, Demon CNC +1 head, CP 12.5:1 piston, Web 208/921, Dasa Classic, bored FCR, FCI... Stock appearing trail cruiser (sleeper).

For my birthday, I slipped away to the Stewart's ATV dyno shop to tune my latest 450R project. It was way too hot (105 degrees) to get better numbers, but I'm fairly happy with it for a stock bore, stock crank on pump gas... Below is one of the dyno sheets, and a couple bike pics. Let me know what you think.

I've been running a CP 12.5 piston for a couple months and couldn't be any happier with it... But my cylinder and crank were in good shape. If I was forced to rebuild, I'd be shooting for 510+ cc's at least. That was my original goal when I had the head built, so it's a bit overkill for my current 450cc cruiser.

I've ran Rotella 15W40 (white bottle) in my 450 engine side and Honda "Red" trans oil in the clutch side for several years. When I recently tore it down to upgrade the piston, head and clutch, everything looked especially clean (still had factory looking crosshatch after 6 years). I usually change it after every full day of riding or two shorter trips. On dune trips, when the weather is hot, or when I'm being especially hard on it, I change it daily. The tip about changing it after every five gallons sounds about right with my current schedule, but I've never thought about it that way. Oil is cheap, CNC ported heads, nikasil and CP pistons aren't... I learned in my circle track days that once oil gets past about 250 degrees once, it's no longer oil, it's liquid engine destruction waiting to happen.

Thanks for the warm welcome... I'm glad there are some 250R and 450R guys still out there. Most times when I go ride, younger guys come up asking what my 250R's are, especially the blue one.

Here's a pic of the trike... It's an alky-ported 260cc, please excuse the gold wheels, normally it wears Haulers on Douglas .125's...

Thanks! I've never talked myself into selling a 250R, only added to the collection. My brother sold one of his 250 trikes, but got it back soon thereafter. I figured it was a sign to hang on to them.

Hello, I thought I'd say hello. I'm Nic McMillin, from Marietta, OK (far southern edge of Oklahoma, and 250 miles away from Little Sahara). I've been involved in ATV's for at least 20 years and have had many Honda's and Yamaha's in that time. I own several 250R's and got two 450R's a couple years ago to have as a cruiser. I've also been involved in automotive drag and circle track racing, as well as a variety of motorsports projects. I'm currently a graphic designer/writer/photographer and also teach History and Behavorial Sciences at a small two-year college here in Oklahoma. Below are pics and descriptions of some of my toys. In addition, I have a few trikes and bikes, but those can come later. The blue 250R is a 1988 I purchased as a bare frame to use up some of my parts collection. I scrounged many parts to build it as cheap, but nice as possible. I ended up with a little over $1,500 in it. It is a stock chassis, powdercoated black with a 265cc trail ported engine, 38mm A/S/ carb, FMF H-49 pipe and V-Force Reeds. It makes a great quick cruiser and trail bike. The red/white 250R is my first Honda, purchased as a thrashed barn-find in 2002. The frame is a 1986, powdercoated Corvette red. The engine is a Sandtrix drag port 330 cylinder with an ESR TRX9 exhaust, intake and 41.2mm Keihin PWK. It recently made 55.5 hp on the dyno on gas. Many of the pieces have been polished, chromed or powdercoated. Finally, my 450R cruiser is a 2007 with a Demon CNC 36/31 head, HRC cam, CP Piston, Dasa Classic Exhaust and Intake. It is basically a stock cruiser with HID lights and a few other tricks, to make 53 hp on the dyno. Thanks for checking out my rides. It's nice to be a member of another forum and I hope that I can add to the knowledge base. If you have any questions about my setups, or 250R's in general, don't hesitate to ask.

I'm looking for a +4 swingarm for my 07 duner and am also looking for a stocker to replace a buddy's damaged 08. PM or call/text 580-276-6732 with what you have.
