1. The U.S. Senate on Tuesday rejected an effort to require an international nuclear agreement with Iran to be considered a treaty, which would have forced any deal to be approved by two-thirds of the Senate's 100 members before it could take effect. The Senate voted 57-39 to reject the measure, offered as an amendment to a bill requiring an Iran nuclear deal to be reviewed by Congress. The amendment would have needed the support of 60 senators to pass, but its support from 39 Republicans showed that there could be intense debate in the coming days as the Senate agrees on a final version of the legislation. Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other members of the chamber's Republican leadership were among those who supported the amendment, despite an emotional appeal against it from Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and author of the Iran Nuclear Review Act. His nearest rival was opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre with 34.95 percent of the vote, the provisional results showed. "In light of these results, the election commission deems that Faure Gnassingbe won the election provided that they are confirmed by the constitutional court," commission head Issoufou Taffa Tabiouon said on state television. 9. Some 2,000 Arab Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv Tuesday against a wave of house demolitions, capping a day in which Arab shops, schools and businesses observed a general strike. The protesters gathered at Rabin Square in the centre of Israel's commercial capital, waving Palestinian flags and wearing headscarves as police officers stood by in case of disturbances. Arab Israelis -- the descendents of Palestinians who stayed in Israel after the Jewish state's establishment -- had been striking across the country since the morning in protest at demolitions of Arab homes, especially in Jerusalem. "This is one of the most painful issues for the Arab public," said prominent Arab Israeli lawmaker Ayman Odeh in a statement shortly before attending the rally. Continue reading...

 18. By Syed Raza Hassan and Robert Birsel KARACHI/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani investigators have found no match for casings of bullets that killed a prominent human rights activist, dashing hopes for quick answers to a murder that has raised fears for the safety of dissenting voices. Gunmen on a motorcycle attacked activist Sabeen Mahmud late last Friday in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, as she was leaving her cafe, where she held art exhibitions and talks. She had just hosted a discussion on disappearances in Baluchistan, a resource-rich southwestern province where the Pakistani army is fighting a separatist insurgency, and, rights workers say, overseeing a campaign of killing opponents. Investigators recovered bullet casings from the scene but drew a blank. Continue reading...

The ministry said last week that the first suspect in the shootings in March and April was acting on instructions from the Islamic State group in Syria, in the first alleged attack by the group inside the kingdom. The suspect, Nawaf Sharif Samir al-Onaizi, opened fire on security forces who returned fire and wounded him, the ministry added. Islamic State last year called on followers in the kingdom to carry out attacks against Saudi authorities, Western expatriates and members of the Shi'ite Muslim minority there instead of traveling to Syria or Iraq to join the group.
