A widely-followed "whistle-blower" who tweeted about the Saudi royal family said Monday he has returned to Twitter after a brief suspension by the social media platform of his account. On Friday he told AFP that Twitter cited the posting in April 2014 of a "private document" related to the royal family as the reason his account could no longer be accessed. "I explained to Twitter administrators my high profile as a credible whistle-blower from within the circles of power in Saudi Arabia," he wrote from the email address that was listed with his suspended account. @mujtahidd added that he told Twitter it "constitutes giving in to pressure" if it merely accepted complaints regarding something he published last year. US Republican Senators attempted to further undermine President Barack Obama's efforts to reach a nuclear accord with Iran on Monday, warning Tehran that any deal might not last. In an open letter to the Islamic republic signed by 47 lawmakers, they told Iran any deal signed by Obama must be ratified by Congress or it could be abandoned by any future president. The letter appeared to be another bid to derail the talks under way between Tehran and the P5+1 group of world powers to place Iran's nuclear program under international surveillance. Many Republican senators fear such a deal would loosen economic sanctions on Tehran while leaving it free to secretly attempt to develop nuclear weapons technology. Continue reading...

Air travel 'safer' in 2014 despite Malaysian disasters: IATA
WorldNews posted a topic in News Outlet
By Siva Govindasamy SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Last year was by some measures the safest in the history of commercial aviation, despite two high-profile crashes involving Malaysia Airlines aircraft in which hundreds of people were killed, a leading industry body said on Monday. While more people died in air accidents in 2014 than the average in recent years, the number of fatal accidents compared with the total number of flights was a record low, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). "While aviation safety was in the headlines in 2014, the data show that flying continues to improve its safety performance," said Tony Tyler, IATA's director general and chief executive officer, in a statement. IATA, which represents about 250 airlines, said in an annual safety report that there were 12 fatal accidents in 2014 with 641 fatalities, versus 19 fatal accidents and 517 fatalities per year in the five-year period between 2009 and 2013. London equities fell in early trade Monday after a strong US jobs report raised expectations that the Federal Reserve could soon hike interest rates. The blue-chip FTSE 100 index of top companies was down 23.33 points, or 0.34 percent, at 6,888.47 points, with developer Land Securities Group and DIY retailer Kingfisher the biggest fallers. US markets sank Friday after the Labor Department said 295,000 jobs were created in February, pushing the unemployment rate down to 5.5 percent, the lowest level since May 2008. Analysts said the latest strong jobs report -- which also follows a series of other positive indicators -- increased the likelihood the Fed will lift rates from near-zero as early as the summer. By William James LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will introduce new laws on Tuesday to try to stop airlines carrying passengers who may be traveling to join Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, a junior minister said on Sunday. Security services estimate some 600 Britons have gone to Syria or Iraq to join militant groups, including the man known as "Jihadi John" who has appeared in several Islamic State beheading videos. Under the proposed new laws, Home Secretary Theresa May would be able to prevent airlines from carrying passengers, including children, believed to be traveling to take part in "terrorism-related activity" on known routes, such as those into Syria, according to a Home Office statement. "This important legislation will disrupt the ability of people to travel abroad to fight and then return," James Brokenshire, a junior minister for security in May's department, said in the statement.
