FRANKLIN, N.H. -- A Franklin woman died when she rushed inside a burning

building in an attempt to save her two daughters, who also died in the fire

early Sunday morning.

The bodies of Beth MacDonald and her two daughters, Jennifer, 8, and Molly,

11, were found together on the second floor of a carriage house connected to

their Cheney Street home.

Fire officials said calls began coming in at 5 a.m. when smoke was seen

coming from the building. Although the house is jut minutes from the fire

station, by the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the

building.

Officials said the girls had been camping in the carriage house as a treat

for decorating the house for Easter. Their mother ran into the building in

an attempt to save the girls. Their father, George MacDonald, also tried to

run in, but he was forced back by the flames, which singed his face.

"We were just finishing up morning breakfast, and one of the members came in

and said that it was George's wife and children, and we're still

devastated," said Richard Gordon, who knows the family. "It's such a shock."

Investigators said the fire was not considered suspicious, and they believe

it began in the garage area on the first floor. Officials were focusing on a

section where there was a gas heater and a power strip with tools plugged

into it.

"The second floor, where the game room was, we had carpet that was unburned,

undamaged, and that's leading us down into the area of the garage and the

walls that supported the first-floor garage area," Deputy Fire Marshal John

Southwell said.

There were no smoke detectors in the carriage house.

Beth MacDonald was a teacher's aide at a local elementary school.
