RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- A 2-year-old girl was killed by a stray
bullet as she was riding on a bicycle with her mother and stepfather in a
shantytown on Rio's poor west side, police said Thursday.
Police said the attackers may have been aiming for her stepfather, alleged
to be small-time drug dealer, who was shot in the chest.
The man, who was not identified by police, remained in the hospital
Thursday.
The girl, Maria Fernanda Guerra da Santana, died of a shot in the head.
Rio is one of the world's most violent cities, with a homicide rate of
around 50 per 100,000 residents. Deaths from stray bullets are not uncommon.
On Monday, a 12-year-old girl was killed in a shootout between drug dealers
and police in another Rio de Janeiro slum.
And another 2-year-old was killed by a stray bullet in January while she was
playing outside her house.
On Tuesday, four people were wounded by stray bullets in a shootout between
police and drug gangs in the Alemao shantytown complex.
On Wednesday, Rio de Janeiro State Security Chief Jose Mariano Beltrame
announced authorities would begin keeping statistics for those killed and
wounded by stray bullets in the city.
Until now, stray bullets were registered merely as homicides and bullet
wounds, without recognizing whether the bullets were fired with the
intention of hitting their victims.
