The New York Times | Another Grim Week in Iraq

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031007A.shtml

"Anyone who wanted to believe that all Mr. Bush was seeking was a

short-term security push - as part of a larger strategy to extricate

American troops from this unwinnable war - now needs to face up to a

far less palatable reality. What is under way is a significant and

long-term escalation," says the New York Times.

J. Sri Raman | Train Tragedy Fails to Help Anti-Terror Cause

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031007B.shtml

J. Sri Raman writes: "The hawks of India and Pakistan can heave a sigh

of relief. A terrorism-hit train has failed to carry the South Asian

peace process forward even fractionally, as many had fondly hoped.

This should come as no surprise to watchers of the region, considering

the place for terrorism in the political themes official India and

Pakistan have pursued in the past, especially in the post-9/11 period.

Before coming to that, a brief look at the latest twist in the tale."

Angry Crowds Protest Bush During Latin American Tour

Some arrived clutching banners telling "Mr. Butcher" to go home.

Others brought effigies of "The Warlord" dangling miserably from a

hangman's noose. A handful dressed up as the grim reaper, while some

women paraded through the streets with stickers of George Bush and

Adolf Hitler placed tastefully over their nipples.

Canaries in the Mine: Inuit Warn World of Human Cost of Climate Change

A Report by Sari Gelzer and Kelpie Wilson

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/030807A.shtml

"Global warming is a human rights issue," says Sheila Watt-Cloutier,

Inuit activist and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. In her lifetime,

Watt-Cloutier has witnessed the drastic effects of climate change that

threaten her community's livelihood and cultural identity.

Watt-Cloutier testified in a hearing on March 1, 2007 to the

Inter-American Commission on Human Rights which was set up to

investigate the relationship between human rights and climate change

in North and South America. The hearing was a result of a petition

that she and 62 other Inuit in Alaska and Canada filed in 2005 in an

attempt to hold the United States accountable for its failure to curb

greenhouse-gas emissions.
