Teacher calls student "N" word .

Valley Traditional High School is in the middle of a racial controversy. A teacher used a racial epithet towards a student. The word is only six letters long but the impact is far reaching.

We do want to warn you that some of the language in this story is strong and may offend some people, but since this story is not just about the "n" word it's also about the pronunciation, we've decided to leave it in the story for you to decide.

Murphy: "What did he say to you specifically?"

Chavers: "Sit down, ******."

I think Dawson was an idiot to try to test those waters in a school with witnesses. I'd be willing to bet that he wished he could have un-rung that bell as soon as he said it.

He had to expect some kind of consequence once the word came out.

I do however think it's bullshit that this word is socially acceptable for anyone except a white person to say.

****, nobody says anything when a black, latino, or even an asian says it for Christ sake. If this is such a term of enderement for the blacks to use toward one another, why don't they get bent out of shape when the latinos, asians or any other person of ethnic origin or race besides whit use it?

Just some thoughts.

I agree with IWS that it is unwise to test the waters. So many people get their panties in a knot over that word that even a fool who's in a position of power, trust, or authority would know not to use it.

Then again, I also think it's the student's and society's fault for perpetuating the use of the word ****** in various forms, so that it's almost seen as "cool" for other people to emulate its use.

I think the word, in any shape or form, is either permitted, or it's not. There's too much controversy and cultural bias and allowances surrounding this word that punishments or dismissals won't be handed out fairly.

So yes, the teacher's comment was inappropriate, but the majority of student bodies act with misconduct that almost calls for a teacher's negative reaction.

I didn't go whining to the higher ups when I got my *** beat on a daily basis by the Drill Instructor Honeycutt on Parris Island. He called me, "A fire-headed hillbilly fairy ******* asshat.". I didn't cry... I was what I was.

Course, you po' white folks in the USA ain't earned the right to say either word cos someone in your family tree wasn't a slave.

Maybe we should make it culturally unacceptable for black people to say 'not guilty'.

Sounds to me like teach was just trying to be all street and ebonics and rap and...yaaawwwwwwwwwwwwn.

 


I take it this teacher was white. Anyone else think this wouldn't even be on our ******' radar if the offender was a brother?

Drill Instructors say **** to try and get a rise out of you. Whether he was right or wrong... he wasn't too far from the truth.

That was me then... now my hair has dulled to brown.

Actually I think that the teacher was well within his rights as a man and as a teacher. In fact it was not that long ago that it was pretty common practice for students with disrespectful tendencies to be taken out into the hallway and slammed against the lockers a few times on the way to the office where they were beat some more. Then in the really extreme cases the parents were brought in to the school to add to the beatings. Teenagers will not GIVE respect to anyone, however respect can be forced out of them in a way that ALL animals can understand, PAIN. The name calling thing is just a sad social malady. The only reason that any racial slur gets any response is because they have been hushed into a state of taboo, thus reinforcing the potency of the imaginary destructive power of an otherwise harmless slang description.

Can't argue with that. Have some rep.

When I was at school, the cane and other forms of corporal punishment were all the rage.

Deterrent or not, it made you think twice.

But when it's all said and done, it's a free speech issue. To me, that should be a no-brainer, it's right there in your constitution.

It seems to me that the most effective way to "un-demonise" and strip the power away from all of these paper tiger verbal arrows would be to use them as oftem as possible and in every media possible. Nothing like a billboard with any given racial slur plasterd across it twenty feet high to take the wind out of the sails of those crybaby sensitive types.

Actually, the best way to take the power from derogatory comments is if nobody acted like they cared or got upset about them. If the person isn't getting an response from their target they'll quit using them. In my opinion anyway.

Which is why the attitudes of African American sports and entertainment stars baffles me. They use racist, homophobic, and misogenistic slurs all the time, but when a white person uses them...

Oooooh, it's taboo time!
