BACK IN THE U.S.A / GEORGIA ON MY MIND

Missed the runway, coming in to land at JFK

and I threw up in a paper bag

It was in September, on a black Tuesday

then everyone was waving flags

I'm back in the U.S. of A., Back in the U.S. of A, boy

Back in the U.S. of A. !!!

Things had changed so much, I hardly knew the place

A fearful public hid at home

Thugs even sabotaging the election race-

building empires, like the days of Rome

It might as well be the USSR, boy

To the Right, it had moved so far, boy

Back in the U.S., back in the U.S,

Back in the U.S. of A. !!!

I guess human beings just cannot seem to see the light

Man, I had a dreadful flight

Making war, their way to try to win the peace

Man, it was a deadly fight

Might as well be in the former USSR, boy

The President's behavior is slightly bizarre, boys

Back in the US, Back in the US,

Back in the U.S. of A. !!!

When you got Big Brother always listening in

then you know, at least, you're not alone

Now, I think the NSA is likely on the way

Honey, disconnect the phone

It might as well be the former USSR, boy

Even got an Intelligence "Czar", boys

Back in the U.S, Back in the U.S.,

Back in the U.S. of A !!!

Those Moscow boys are trying to come out,

but they're not allowed to parade-ADE-ADE-ADE

Those Georgia boys are a real knock-out

Someday will throw a grenade-ADE-ADE-ADE

-AID-AID-AID-AID-AID-AID-AID!

Cracking down on dissent, now

Lucky if adults can still consent, now

Back in the US of A...

You really can't go on this way, oppressing gays

Try adopting a more civil tone

They can pinch you in a very painful way

It best to leave the folks alone

Back in the US of A...

Our country loves to brag, boy

But Gitmo's like a gulag, boy

Back in the U.S, Back in the U.S.,

Back in the U.S. of A !!!

Turn the clocks back, honey, on Stone Mountain, way down South

Take me to the Neely Farm

Let me hear the Dixie banjos ringing out,

Burning crosses to keep warm

Now, I'm studying at Georgia Tech, boy

Goin' down the track to a train wreck, boy

Back in the U.S, Back in the U.S.,

Back in the U.S. of A !!!

That Georgia's always on my, my, my, my mind...

Not the one Hoagy Carmichael had in mind, either (which wasn't

Georgia are reporting that a man was caught trying to sell a

what is also known as "weapons grade" uranium. The quantity was

only about 3.5 ounces, but the man reportedly said he had access

to a lot more where that came from.

REACTOR TALKING POINTS

For Nuclear Regulatory Commission Public Meeting on

Rules for Extending Nuclear Power Reactor Licenses from 40 years

to 60 years

Tuesday July 8, 2003 - NRC meeting starts at 7:00

6:30 pm is a media reception - all welcome

DoubleTree-Atlanta Perimeter

-- 6120 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Atlanta

Dr. John Gofman called nuclear power "mass premeditated murder" ?

this is why:

NRC is in denial about the aging of reactors and Table B-1 NEEDS

to be reviewed and used as the basis to phase out reactors by

shortening reactor licenses to 25 years and not granting any new

ones! The Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) process that is

used to verify the components like the reactor pressure vessel

and other fixed pieces of the reactor system was so decrepit and

senile that it completely missed / did not anticipate the

control rod drive mechanism cracking at Duke's Oconee reactors.

All three reactor units at Oconee (Owned by Duke on the Savannah

River Lake in SC) were re-licensed AND then the cracks were

found. NRC took action, and again stumbled blindly into another

near catastrophe - the corrosion at Davis Besse (near Toledo,

Ohio, owned by First Energy).

Georgia-based contractor Williams Power Corp. for violating

federal regulations.

In 1979, when the movie 'The China Syndrome' opened, the nuclear

industry, politicians and the media vilified Jane Fonda, saying

that the plot about a nuclear power accident could not happen.

Eleven days later a similar accident occured at the Three Mile

In the last two years, members of religious minorities in

Georgia have been subjected to increasing violence and

harassment.

The government of Georgia has taken some steps to address the

attacks, but these appear to have been inadequate and

ineffective, giving rise to the impression that those who attack

or harass members of "non-traditional" faiths may do so with

impunity.

The UN Committee Against Torture has expressed concern regarding

"the failure of police to intervene and take appropriate action

despite the existence of legal tools to prevent and prosecute

acts of religious violence" and the lack of an effective and

independent mechanism for filing complaints.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom wrote

Of course, attitudes towards divorce and race managed to change

rather quickly, too, once the government removed itself from the

position of endorsing the prejudices and beliefs of Christians

on those matters. The same might happen with homosexuality, but

getting the government to change will take a bit of work...

In April 2000, Georgian police arrested four persons in Batumi,

Georgia, for unauthorized possession of 0.9 kilogram of highly

enriched uranium fuel pellets. Batumi is a seashore resort at

the Black Sea located along the Georgia-Turkey border. According

to one press report, the material may have been smuggled from

Russia. The pellets mass and shape, together with the reported

enrichment level, suggest that the pellets were produced for use

in a commercial or experimental fast breeder reactor. Another

report also stated that the smugglers were detected when they

crossed the Russian border into Georgia, possibly by radiation

monitoring equipment and were then trailed to the city of Batumi,

where they were apprehended. It is believed that the individuals

were trying to smuggle the material into Turkey.

Tbilisi, Georgia, 2000

In September 2000, three persons were arrested at Tbilisi

airport for attempting to sell a small quantity of mixed powder

containing about 0.0004 kilograms of plutonium and 0.0008

kilograms of low enriched uranium, as well as a 0.002 kilogram

sample of natural uranium. According to press reports, an

official in the Georgian Ministry of State Security said that

two individuals arrested were Georgian citizens, and the third

was from Armenia. The individuals said they had brought the

uranium and plutonium from Russia and Ukraine to sell it.

Ha! Berkely and Mr C is fans of a cult film?

Spud wonders if this Mayor would take THAT as a sign of Satanism.

gun first."

Great Scott! You fergot the Toast and Toilet Paper!

"Don't Dream it. Be it!"

Be Well.

Berkeley's got a question...

"I don't remember the toilet paper. When do you throw it?"

When "Doctor" Scott (or should Spud say "Doctor Von Scott"?)

gets magnetically dragged up the stairs (wif the hilariously

obvious guy-wire leading the way) and ends up crashing through

the wall leading Brad to remark...

Great Scott!"

Commence wif the throwing of the toilet paper (some movie houses

disallowed this particular variation Spud has heard).

Scott brand toilet paper is prefered, of course, fer this, but

any brand will do.

I say "Right on' right on, right on" to Moscow mayor Yuri

Luzhkov for the ban on the gay parade. I am a Christian and I

find that the gay community is living in a fantasy world. They

weren't born that way; they're just having an identity crisis.

And I would tend to agree with the satanic' tag. satin is behind

the gay movement. Laugh all you want, but if you read the bible,

you will find that the gay movement actually started way back

then.

God condemns homosexuality in His word not the person, and I

condemn it as well. Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice. Ever

since the gays started coming out of the closet, they have been

trying to convince the world that they are normal. Normal? I

guess that depends on your definition of normal.

God doesn't hate the person, just the sin. Homosexuals are

living a lie. They are never going to be happy. But if you ask

them if they are happy, they'll tell you they couldn't be

happier. But I disagree. They could be a lot happier if they had

God in their lives. And yes, I know it is my opinion.

Sin is what you do when you aren't satisfied with God.

Homosexuals will not be going to heaven. Read the bible and you

will find all of the answers to your problems.

I wonder how many of you reading this, are going to give ma

flack about this comment. I welcome all to comment.

Remember, God loves the sinner, but he hates the sin.

Where would someone start with your comments? They are nothing

but a load of hateful horseshit. Who cares about you and your

God. That is your lifestyle choice - who the hell are you to

judge others? Support others' rights to live their life as they

wish and let your god sort it out on the other side.

It is people like you that have been responsible for eroding the

rights and freedoms of others in our country. You suffer from

excessive pride, self righteousness, and self-importance that

leads you to try to force your beliefs on others

The agency cited a spokesman for the service, Valery Rozhnov, as

saying on Monday that there were 11 research nuclear reactors in

Moscow, having the combined capacity of 20 megawatts. The

official said that part of those reactors were operating at

higher educational institutions where it is hard to cerate the

radioactive materials.

Rozhnov went on to say that "Such nuclear facilities as the

Using a double-pinch hohlraum target, capsule implosions in the ~

70 eV hohlraum [13] have been radiographed by 6.7 keV x-rays

produced by the Z-Beamlet Laser (ZBL). These experiments

demonstrated capsule implosion convergence ratios between 14 and

21 from a radiation drive symmetry that is within 1.6 to 4 times

the symmetry required for scaling to high yield [14]. Using a

dynamic hohlraum target, a 2.1-mm-diameter deuterium-filled CH

capsules absorbs up to 35 kJ of x-ray energy from the ~ 220 eV

dynamic hohlraum [15]. The capsule convergence ratio is 5-10 and

the thermonuclear DD neutron yield measured with activation

detectors is up to 8 x 10^10.

Double-Faith in Rural Russia

The whole poetic system of fairy-tales (characters, mechanism of

plot development, formulas) aims at the creating of a

specifically magical world. Fantasy is the basic poetic feature

of any fairy-tale.

The poetic organization of mythological stories is diametrically

opposite

According to folklore beliefs the other world is a reflection of

our world. What is on the left here will be on the right there.

That is why the nymph's song in the story above had all the

words back-to-front. So people may say: " I am a widow so my

house-spirit is a widow too" or "My house-spirit has a family

the same size as I have - he has a wife and three children". A

house-spirit is very "sensitive" to the appearance of new family

members, especially new women. A house-spirit can strangle or

pinch young wives. We met women in our expeditions who showed us

their arms all black-and-blue. They declared that this was from

a house-spirit who did not like them. A house-spirit also does

not like shrewish, evil and greedy wives. People say that if a

husband and wife quarrel often a house-spirit will play tricks

on them both . He will hide dishes, frighten family members with

strange noises, and so forth.

A house-spirit also foretells - he cries and groans before some

unhappy event

The FBI and State Department are also investigating the incident,

Mackin said.

In his speech, Bush told a crowd of tens of thousands that

Georgia is proving to the world that determined people can rise

up and claim their freedom from oppressive rulers.

"Your most important contribution is your example," Bush said,

speaking in Freedom Square, site of protests in November 2003 of

the inauguration parade route was lined the entire way with

armed guards - so many armed guards that they had to stand

shoulder-to-shoulder. As with the rest of America, Washington,

D.C. was in a state of siege.

The militant air of the entire affair was very much like a

parade in the old Soviet Union or even in Nazi Germany.

And in his speech, George Bush proclaimed his desire for world

domination - to have the power and the right to decide who is

good and who is bad, who shall live and who shall die, what form

of government will exist in each nation.

He made it clear that if he has a use for your government, you

will keep it - no matter how oppressive.

Gayfeather and the Revolution

Phase II of the Gay Revolution is upon us. Not only have humans

deviated from Nature's unwritten laws, but Man has noted that

sodomy is rampant amongst the lesser beasts of God's Creation.

The first inklings of this deviation occurred in a zoo. Wendell

and Cass, two normally law-abiding penguins, were deemed to be

queer in 2002. Unbeknownst to these tuxedo-bearing aristocratics

of the North, the merry birds unintentionally started what now

can be seen as the Stonewall of the Animal Kingdom, with the

ultimate objective of homosexualizing all of God's Creatures.

The Revolution spread last year with the outting of Lenny the

Great White Shark. Who would have known that Don Lino, a model

for masculinity, would have been able to produce such an

effeminate killer fish.

Moral values have now been totally washed away with the recent

outting of SpongeBob -- the playful hermaphrodite who no longer

bats for both teams. These seemingly random incidents have now

opened our eyes to a bigger phenomenon which goes beyond public

displays of affection at the New York Aquarium. Deer, donkeys,

lions, moose, dogs, leopards, and even squirrels have been

shedding their inhibitions for public, unadulterated homosexual

displays of love-making. The Christian Right is seething, but

will not surrender. As long as the Revolution is limited to the

Animal Kingdom, there just may be hope for the eradication of

vile homosexual activity amongst God's Creatures. As long as the

Plant World remains a completely heterosexual bastion of purity

and devoid of even the thought of mutual masturbation, oral sex

or bare-backing, the Christian Right seems to believe it has the

upper hand.

Little do they know that the Texas native blazing-star (a.k.a.

the gayfeather) has been working on Phase III of the Revolution.

Soon not even the Christian Right will be able to think of

something that isn't gay...

The electricity drives the 3.7-Tesla superconducting magnet, a

refrigerator that cools the magnet to 4 degrees Kelvin and a

bank of high-voltage converters that feed the gyrotron tube. The

95-GHz cyclotonic oscillations generate a millimeter-wave energy

beam that penetrates the skin to about 1/64th-of-an-inch and

heats it to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. DoD claims there are no

permanent effects to victims within its range of 50 feet to 500

meters, but the beam will cause those in the beam's path to

"flee" out of its range.

Further, according to Loree, millimeter waves from the weapon do

not cause skin cancer or harm reproductive organs. Using a

display, troops could direct the beam accurately, enabling the

weapon to disperse crowds in predictable, repeatable patterns,

Loree claimed.

Besides ground vehicles, the Navy is expected to develop a ship-

mounted version and the Air Force a long-range airborne version

for fixed-wing gunships. The weapon was demonstrated recently at

Moody Air Force Base (Valdosta, Georgia).

Airman Douglas Gilley, Jr. was found guilty Sept. 21 of fleeing

Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Ga. The gay airman could have

faced a more serious charge of desertion for running away, he

said, because he became fearful for his life after the anti-gay

murder last October of college student Matthew Shepard. Gilley

claimed he had asked for a discharge on the grounds he was being

harassed, but base officials said at his trial that he had never

revealed he was gay to any of his supervisors, co-workers or

even his roommate.

Gilley was sentenced to seven months in jail, a bad conduct

discharge, forfeiture of pay and a reduction in grade. He will

still be discharged and cut off from pay and benefits, but

thanks in part to the efforts of the Georgia Equality Project

(GEP), Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), Human Rights

Campaign (HRC) and National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 30 days

were taken off his prison sentence plus credit for time served.

Rumors of Airman Gilley's perceived sexual orientation were

circulating in his unit, and several unit members asked him if

he was gay," the letter said. "[He] did not believe he could

safely tell his First Sergeant the source of the danger [to his

life], the harassment he experienced or his sexual orientation,

because he feared the harassment would increase and he would be

at risk of physical attack. His First Sergeant told Airman

Gilley he had to stay in the Air Force? Not knowing where to

turn he fled."

The groups also pointed out to Coverdell that Gilley's fears

were well-founded in light of the brutal anti-gay murder of Pfc.

Barry Winchell at Fort Campbell Army Base in Kentucky in July.

Georgian political figures continue to advance various

hypotheses to explain the 25 February suicide of 60-year-old

Georgian National Security Council Secretary Lieutenant General

President Eduard Shevardnadze blamed Sadzhaya's death on the

accusations that Sadzhaya was a homosexual made by former

Defense Minister Tengiz Kitovani. Shevardnadze expressed regret

that he had pardoned Kitovani, who was quoted by "Rezonansi" on

26 February as pointing out that he first accused Sadzhaya of

being gay six years ago. Kitovani said he believes Sadzhaya was

murdered, but did not specify by whom. Georgian parliament

Defense and Security Committee Chairman Giorgi Baramidze implied

that Sadzhaya had been driven to take his life by a slander

campaign undertaken by Aslan Abashidze's opposition Revival

Union at the instigation of Russia. Former Deputy Defense

Minister Gia Karkarashvili said Sadzhaya fell victim to "an

attempt to change the political course of the country" by

engineering the return to active Georgian politics of fugitive

former Security Service chief Igor Giorgadze, according to

"Akhali taoba" on 26 February. LF

HOORAY FOR DIXIE!

Dixie became the name for the Southland because

many Louisana immigrants were French.

In the French language, dix is the word for ten,

so a ten dollar coin was a 'Dixie.'

The land that used the coin was called "Dixieland."

The foot of cultural genocide is stamping out our southern heritage.

Speaking of that beautiful flag, the only reason that we have

lost her as our state flag is that the Yankees are still trying

to oppress the South. They wouldn't even be down here if it

weren't for air conditioning, as they are cold-blooded. We have

lost our flag because too many Yankees have moved here and are

breeding their lies, many of them unintentionally, and there are

too many spineless politicians willing to sell out our heritage,

for money and votes. The War for Southern Independence was about

states rights, not about slavery.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said, "History is lies agreed upon." In

no instance is this truer than in the case of the War for

Southern Independence

CHAPTER EIGHT: Noon on Stone Mountain.

The choice of Atlanta for the ritual incantation was obvious: it

was the powerhouse of the New South, the putative capital of

Nixon's recreated United States. But what significance did

Stone Mountain have? other than as a geological curiosity and a

second-echelon tourist attraction?

Geologists cannot explain the origin of this naked height of

bare rock, the largest exposed mass of granite in the world,

thirty miles from the nearest mountain - seemingly lodged in,

rather than rising out of, the Georgia Piedmont, as if a

Doomsday asteroid had struck Earth here but not yet begun to

extinguish all life. The earliest explorers found an enclosure

of "huge boulders" atop it, "somewhat reminiscent of Druid

places of worship in Britain", encircling the peak. The native

Americans they encountered here had no idea of who had managed

to move the boulders, let alone arrange them so precisely.

Archaeologists have speculated that since the enclosure had only

one entrance, accessible only to a single person at a time, on

hand and knee, it may have been "symbolic of the womb" i.e., the

shrine of a fertility religion. Lurid speculation by

pamphleteers about human sacrifice on the site remain unverified.

Throughout the 19th century Stone Mountain remained a scenic

outlook attraction for the upper class. Its rendevous with

history awaited the first total war of the 20th century and the

tide of reaction and repression that inevitably accompanied it.

On August 16, 1915, twenty-five armed men broke Jewish factory

manager Leo Frank out of Atlanta prison. They called

themselves the Knights of Mary Phagan, after the fourteen-year-

old Gentile girl Frank was accused of murdering. They drove

Frank to Phagan's home town of Marietta and lynched him. The

local authorities made a spectacular effort not to solve the

crime.

Exactly a month later, these same man celebrated the act by

climbing up onto Stone Mountain and burning a cross that was

visible all across the greater Atlanta area.

On Thanksgiving, anticipating the triumphal opening in Atlanta

of D.W. Griffith's racist cinematic epic The Birth of a Nation,

they burned another cross on Stone Mountain.

This time they were celebrating their use of the charter to

found the modern Ku Klux Klan. Regular cross burnings

thereafter transformed the site from an innocuous tourist

attraction into a shrine for bigotry.

In case the cross burnings were too subtle to communicate the

Mountain's new significance, the Daughters of the Confederacy,

after ceaseless agitating, finally started the project of their

dreams: turning the stone flank of the mountain into a huge

statuary carving of the leaders of their lost nation

Agnew was flown in under conditions appropriate for a banana

republic dictator, not to Atlanta Airport, but to Dobbins Air

Force Base in Marietta, whence he was "whisked by helicopter" to

Stone Mountain. The air base was crawling with police and

soldiers; only a "handful of newsmen" were allowed on the scene -

no other civilians - and the reporters were not allowed closer

than one hundred feet.

At Stone Mountain, "[seldom] interrupted by applause", he merely

pulled the prepared text out of his jacket pocket and read from

it. Of the predicted crowd of 100,000, barely ten thousand

showed up. Among those failing to honor their promises to

appear were the Rev. Billy Graham and Senator Richard Russell.

Perhaps the sharpest chagrin was felt by fried chicken

entrepreneur Harry Hearn, who was stuck with six thousand cold,

unsold dinners. Governor Maddox sampled one with the typically

testy observation that it was appropriate fare

The speech was as unexciting as the cold chicken. "The South

that will make its greatest contribution to the American Dream

is the New South," Agnew read, "just as the South cannot afford

to discriminate against any of its people, the rest of the

nation cannot afford to discriminate against the South

But content was not important. The President's spokesman had

come to the birthplace and citadel of the modern Klan and stood

beneath the lowering monument to the South's inveterate

determination to turn back the clock

To describe Georgia Tech as a party piss-bucket, or perhaps as a

languid land of mathematic zombies would be akin to promoting

these terms to the arena of respectability. Shitty is an apt

term for all parties thrown at Georgia Tech, but a step in that

direction runs the risk of never again rising above the

scatological. One can safely say, without risk of running into

juvenile heckling, that carousing, fun, antics and youthful

playfulness go to die at Georgia Tech.

A Supreme Court ruling throwing out Georgia's hate crimes law

yesterday means state lawmakers will have to revisit the roiling

debate that divided them deeply four years ago. The hate crimes

law barely passed the Legislature in 2000 after bitter arguments

about whether some crimes are worse than others when bigotry is

in the heart of the accused. It passed only after protections

for gay people were removed and the law rewritten to vaguely

refer to "bias or prejudice." Of the 48 states with hate-crimes

laws, Georgia's was the only not to specify who would be

protected. Now Georgia's law is no more after an unanimous state

Supreme Court ruling Monday that the hate crimes law was

"unconstitutionally vague." Ironic, to say the least.

Alexander Rahr said nuclear engineering could be a good way for

the West to help Georgia settle long-running conflicts with its

breakaway provinces, without facing the risk of straining

explosion in a high-power electricity transmission tower in

Russia's North Caucasus caused blackouts in much of the country.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was honored to have been

able to sponsor the grave marking ceremony for James Dunwoody

Bulloch and his brother, Irvine Stephens Bulloch, in Toxteth

Park Cemetery, Liverpool, on January 7, 2001.

Both these men, from Georgia, served the Confederacy well and

faithfully in the Confederate States Navy, one as Captain, and

ultimately, Commander Bulloch, and the other as a midshipman,

rising to the rank of lieutenant. After the War Between The

States was lost, they remained in Liverpool as businessmen and

cotton merchants, and contributors to English commerce.

Southport's Roy Rawlinson, who runs a website called

"When Liverpool Was Dixie", said: "Most people have heard about

the Alabama's links with Liverpool. It became the most successful

raider of all time.

Bulloch was born in the southern state of Georgia in 1823. At

the outbreak of the war, he offered his services to the

Confederate states and was sent to Liverpool in the guise of a

naval purchasing agent.

Now, 100 years after Bulloch's death, his incredible tale of

intrigue is being honoured at an exhibition in Crosby library, a

few streets away from where he lived.

He was forced to stay in Liverpool because he was the one person

the United States wanted to put on trial.

New James Bond Thriller Foreshadows Real Dangers In Caucasus

By Michael T. Klare

James Bond and Bill Clinton are both eyeing the same remote

terrain these days. Whether Clinton's script for the Caspian Sea

region will manage to avoid the geopolitical land mines that

confront James Bond remains to be seen. But the film highlights

the very real dangers lurking in the region.

While the Bond version of this story is entirely fictional, it

does raise important warning signs regarding the risk of

conflict raised by the Clinton gameplan. Although the leaders of

Azerbaijan and Georgia have pledged to provide the necessary

security for the east-west pipeline, neither country is strong

enough to overcome insurgent and separatist forces operating

within their territory.

The ciphers implemented by these machines brought about a

significant increase in the complexity of cryptanalysis. The

various attacks on Enigma, for example, succeeded only after

considerable effort. Occasionally, these devices have featured

in films, such as in the James Bond adventure,

"From Russia with Love".

What's Going On In Georgia?

When the head of the Security Council of a ramshackle

dictatorship like Georgia commits suicide, there will always be

questions. Not only "why did he do it?", but also "Did he

actually do it?"

Nugzar Sadzhaya, a close ally of Georgian President Eduarde

Shevardnadze for over 30 years, was apparently alone in his

office yesterday afternoon when, perhaps depressed by constant

headlines accusing him of the murder of Shevardnadze's

predecessor, a single bullet passed into his brain. Sadzhaya was

rushed to hospital but died before surgeons could operate.

A week ago, powerful independent parliamentarian Boris Kakubava --

who often represents refugees from Abkhazia -- went on national

TV to accuse Sadzhaya and Avtandil Ioseliani, head of Georgian

intelligence, of masterminding the killing of former President

Zviad Gamsakhurdia and others. After being overthrown by then

Russian-backed Shevardnadze in 1990, Gamsakhurdia travelled to

Chechnya, then returned to Georgia to lead an armed struggle

against the government. He was killed in 1993 in a murder widely

thought to have been organized by Shevardnadze himself.

Sadhzhaya was little known even inside his own country. His

nickname of "the gray cardinal" referred to his ability to keep

out of the public eye. However, he has played a key role in

grooming and bring forward cadres who now control most of the

important state security positions. In addition, he was known as

a supporter of closer ties with Russia.

This last fact cannot be discounted if, in fact, the suicide

story turns out to be false. As recently reported in this space,

Shevardnadze has recently and publicy rebuffed Russian

assistance to clean out the so-called lawless Pankisi Gorge.

Even more, he was reported to have invited in U.S. Special

Forces to handle the task. For all his long service to the

President, perhaps Sadhzhaya was on the wrong side of this

important issue.

The Tulip Revolution refers to the overthrow of President Askar

Akayev and his government in the Central Asian republic of

Kyrgyzstan after the parliamentary elections of February 27 and

of March 13, 2005. The revolution sought the end of rule by

Akayev and by his family and associates, who in popular opinion

had become increasingly corrupt and authoritarian. Following the

revolution, Akayev fled the country. On April 4 he signed his

resignation statement in the presence of a Kyrgyz parliamentary

delegation in his country's embassy in Moscow, and on April 11

the Kyrgyz Parliament ratified his resignation.

In the early stages of the revolution, the media variously

referred to the unrest as the "Pink," "Lemon", "Silk", "Daffodil",

or "Sandpaper" Revolution. But it was "Tulip Revolution," a term

that Akayev himself used in a speech warning that no such Color

Revolution should happen in Kyrgyzstan, which stuck in the end.

Such terms evoked similarities with the non-violent Rose

Revolution in Georgia and the Orange Revolution in Ukraine in

2004, whose names owe a debt to the Czech-Slovak Velvet

Revolution.

Givi Targamadze, a former member of Liberty Institute and the

chair of Georgian Parliamentary Committee on Defense and

Security, consulted Ukrainian opposition leaders on the

technique of nonviolent struggle, and later he advised leaders

of Kyrgyz opposition during the Tulip Revolution.

The Tulip Revolution, however, saw some violence in its initial

days, most notably in the southern city of Jalal-Abad, where the

first major signs of violence were noted, and at least three

people died during widespread looting in the capital in the

first 24 hours after the
