Billboard Bullshit

Being a musician this ****** me off to no end.

In the "USA Weekend" magazine section of this Sunday's paper the "music experts" at Billboard magazine offer their picks for the "most touching, unique and clever compositions" from the top pop songs of the past 13 years (i.e. the songs of a current teen's lifetime).

Now I admit I'm out of touch with music from a current teen's lifetime, but *** help us. The list includes Mariah Carey (from The Emancipation of Mimi). I can't say I'm familiar with Ms. Carey's body of work, but I think it's safe to say clever she ain't.

The lyric quoted from Alicia Keyes is:

Sometimes I feel good/At times I feel used". Again, feel free to educate me about Alicia Keyes, and I admit my ignorance of her work, but is this specific lyric touching, unique or clever? Or bland, mundane, self-involved and boring?

Ditto for a group called "Everything but the Girl". The lyric quoted is" And I miss you/ Like the deserts miss the rain." Ths is unique? How about "I hate you/ Like a dog hates a cat". How about "I'm blue/Like the sky".

Also TLC (again, chastise me for my ignorance) but they are praised for being "innovative in popularizing the term "scrub", which became a phenomenon". I must have missed this phenomenon, as my use of the word "scrub" has been limited to to more utilitarian uses.

Just makes me miss and appreciate lyrics that are truly "touching, unique, and clever".

So I suppose they're backtracking all the way back to when today's 13 year olds were listening to Raphie or Elmo's greatest hits.

And most pop songs (ok, all pop songs) aren't exactly "unique" since they're all usually about the same old **** over and over.

Now I admit I'm out of touch with music from a current teen's lifetime, but *** help us. The list includes Mariah Carey (from The Emancipation of Mimi). I can't say I'm familiar with Ms. Carey's body of work, but I think it's safe to say clever she ain't.
Yea, what kind of asinine **** did this piece of yesterdays entertainment news's writers come up with now?

Unique my ***. How long did it take her writers to come up with the idea that sometimes she feels good and sometimes she doesn't? A whole two minutes?

Ditto for a group called "Everything but the Girl". The lyric quoted is" And I miss you/ Like the deserts miss the rain." Ths is unique? How about "I hate you/ Like a dog hates a cat". How about "I'm blue/Like the sky".
Who?

This is referring to the song "no scrubs" which came out about seven years ago. You didn't miss much.

Just makes me miss and appreciate lyrics that are truly "touching, unique, and clever".
Now that the execs rule the music industry with a greedy fist full of dollars......
