Gunmen Attack L.A.-Area Parties Leaving 2 Dead, 11 Wounded

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Two people were killed in a spate of shootings at two

separate parties in the Los Angeles area, authorities said Sunday.

The first shooting happened late Saturday at a Long Beach Masonic temple

that had been rented out for a birthday party, said Sgt. Dina Zapalski, a

police spokeswoman. Several gang members apparently crashed the party, which

had several hundred guests, she said. As the gang members arrived, a fight

ensued.

Breon Taylor, 15, of Los Angeles and Dennis Moses, 17, of Long Beach were

critically wounded and later died from their injuries, Zapalski said.

Another 17-year-old boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No one had

been arrested as of Sunday afternoon.

Hundreds of partygoers were taken by bus to a nearby elementary school,

where police were questioning them, Zapalski said.

No one was immediately arrested.

Parents of guests who rushed to the lodge after hearing of the shootings

told the Long Beach Press-Telegram the party attracted a huge crowd because

it was advertised on the Internet.

The second shooting took place early Sunday in Compton, when four or five

men turned up at a party and opened fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff's

Deputy Tony Moore said.

Eight people were shot and three were critically wounded.

No one was immediately arrested, and Moore said it was not known if the

attack was gang-related.
