Man sentenced to prison for sex with teen
Thursday, December 20, 2007

XENIA - A 51-year-old Greene County man was sentenced Thursday to 16 years
in prison for raping and engaging in unlawful sexual conduct with his
girlfriend's daughter, starting when she was 12 years old.

Judge Stephen Wolaver chastised Dannie E. Slaven, of Xenia Twp., for his
lack of remorse over his conduct with the girl, who gave birth to a baby boy
on Nov.16.

"Nothing I can think of right now," Slaven mumbled, then repeated for the
court reporter, when offered a chance to make an apology or some other
statement.

Slaven's memory was "so unclear," lawyer Don Brezine said, and no paternity
test had been done, to determine whether the child was his.

Slaven was arrested in April following an investigation triggered when the
girl, now 14, inquired about an abortion, according to court records.

The girl told investigators she had sex with Slaven and watched pornographic
movies at his home, according to court records.

"You've robbed me of my childhood," she said in a statement read Thursday by
Wolaver, calling for a 10-year sentence. "Maybe you'll realize how evil a
man you are."

Slaven, who's served 249 days in jail since his arrest, pleaded no contest
to rape and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct after Wolaver rejected
claims his statement to police violated his rights.

On Thursday, he also was designated an aggravated sexually oriented offender
required to report authorities every 90 days "for the rest of your life,"
Wolaver said.

Investigators questioned the girl following a mandatory report by a rape
crisis center that she was seeking to terminate her pregnancy from a rape
she claimed occurred outside a Bath Twp. skating ring, a detective said in
court records.

Authorities said her mother who knew of, but failed to report the sex, later
attempted suicide. On Thursday, County Sheriff's Office Capt. Eric Spicer
said he awaited a decision by prosecutors on whether to seek charges against
the mother.

The baby remains in the custody of Greene County Children's Services.
