Guest Thomas Keske
BRIDGE PIGEONS The road crew's equipment was dripping with some sort of mysterious, slippery substance that I could not identify, so I asked an impish ELF who lives under the bridge, as roommate of Mr. Tin Whiskers. He said something about the National Defense that did not quite make sense, that they were misspending on the Da Fence. You know... Down Der, by da Mexico border, insteada fixin da byways an bridges, which was what was causin our intrastructure destructure The ELF told me of an Immunoglobulin Goblin who experimented in an underground Lavatory Laboratory. After many repeated cynical clinical trials, he succeeded in making incremental excremental progress toward the volume production of amino acid guanylating secret reagents, using pigeon guano as a readily available guanidinium in the functionalized hydrogel as bile acid feeling like your bowels have gone bowling and thrown a gutter ball in your gullet by the ravenous gourmands of an incompetent guilty government He built bridges plastered with Beverly Hills Botox ballot box cement shoes trowelled over a face covered with a hot towel to stop anyone from seeing the fine cracks, the fine wrinkles in the face of a vain 25 year-old starlet with crows feet stomped by corrosive road salt and assault and battery acid transported by pigeon resealed ghosts not successfully analyzed after the fact by the cosmetic structural defect detectives. Toiling over his experimental toilet, flush with pride at his discoveries, by mixing battery acid and applying high voltage to the bronchoalveolar lavage brake lining fluid with the superficial superglue that held the loose ceiling bolts, his grant unfortunately ran out and his dog was run over, nearly exhausting an oily black smoke out his tailpipe and putting the brakes on his investigation. The Immunoglobulin Goblin applied for a bridge loan in order to continue funding his research, but the payments lapsed, the economy collapsed, and the automobile immune system completely collapsed, until the raucous crowds and the carrion crows and the carcasses of the cars were still Motionless Like bumper-to-bumper dead buffalo needing to go to the bathroom and smelling like the town dump like white pigeon dropping bombs splattering bleached white bones of bison killing the last prayers of the prairies and the belief in Hebrew National Beef with six billion sold, six billion buried as advertised on vulgar commercial billboards We will build another Ark when the Artic ice melts, in cubits, with ice cubes and 2x4's, in order to save the endangered species 2x2, when the melted ice floods all the Florida auto engines. "We can't speculate too much; the investigation is still going on and this is early in process," says Neal Langerman, a health and safety division expert with the American Chemical Society. But he says there is "a chemical mechanism by which the high salt levels of dried pigeon dung can cause corrosion and weaken metal. But there are mysteries to the pigeon that few of us know. "Pigeons don't pee," explains Fitzpatrick. "It's a water-saving mechanism. Reptiles and birds crystallize their ammonium waste into uric acid, which is the white stuff in bird poop. It forms a salt when it dries and could certainly accelerate corrosion of steel." ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.cs.utah.edu/~regehr/research/pelican.html A Pigeon-Based Guidance System In one of the odder stories of World War II, the US military backed an investigation into weapons guided by trained pigeons. The investigation was conducted by the well-known behavioral psychologist Burrhus Frederic Skinner. In early 1942, Skinner, then of the University of Minnesota, conducted preliminary studies on the concept of using trained animals as a guidance system. The studies were funded at a low level by General Mills, a major food producer. The US National Defense Research Committee (NDRC), which funded new technologies that might be useful for winning the war, was skeptical of the idea, but in mid-1943 awarded a $25,000 USD contract to General Mills to continue the work. The investigation was codenamed PROJECT PIGEON, and Skinner hoped to be able to use pigeons to guide a weapon to within 6 meters (20 feet) of a target. ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Effect of Low Energy, Extremely Low Frequency (ELF ... The racing pigeon is unique in the feathered world! Keeping all of these known attributes in mind, it is not difficult to comprehend how the manipulation of the environment, just might, let me repeat, just might play havoc with the on-board biological navigational systems of the racing pigeon. Figure 4: Long distance racing homers like these have extremely sensitive and highly developed biological navigational systems that may be at risk through ELF manipulation. The pigeon above is owned and raced by Thomas Mattacchione and the photo was taken by Andrew Skrobot. After over 30 years of development, and extensive testing around the globe, these new scalar electromagnetic weapons are up and running and ready to go. Tom Bearden, at his website Cheniere, dicusses the history of these new scalar electromagnetic weapons in his paper "Historical Background of Scalar EM Weapons." These are the weapons Nikita Khrushchev spoke of in January, 1960. Here's a direct quotation from the U.S. Secretary of Defense, dealing with the very kind of electromagnetic weapons that you thought was a conspiratorial notion of mine when I wrote about them openly. Feel free to check the reference; it's in the official transcript as cited. 'Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves... So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations... It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.' ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.elfwood.com/art/w/i/willemoever/lonely_elf.jpg.html This blind elf has been living all on her own in the woods since she's been cast out of her village because she can't see. Anyway theres probably a good chance that it is named after one of those people in the movies or whatever but it is actually just what he decided to refer to his dealer during this song. Anyway he wrote it while he was waiting on a park bench and there was an older man a couple seats down feeding pigeons. Peace - papa, colfax, IA Bob was going through what I call his 'confused phase' when he wrote this - how can you be "neath the trees" feeding pigeons on a limb? They must be very low hanging limbs - possibly the pigeons have been fed too much and are now overwight? Would that be why the limbs are hanging so low? He unlocked the box, picked up Norman the Elf, and placed him on the bed. As they walked out of Enloe, they began discussing possible punishments for Norman for staging his rebellion. "Maybe we can convince Delilah to revoke his deification. Make him a mortal, with no powers," Jason suggested. "I dunno, I'm kind of leaning towards Bevin's proposal," Brendan said. "We sentence him to purchase all of Bevin's feminine products until the end of time." I think some people may object to that," said Wayland. "Who cares about them? Goddamned hippie tree-huggers." "Yes. He was planning to schedule the handover for just after the theatrical release of the 'Manchurian Candidate' remake. The apparent leader, a tall, thin, rather austere looking elf dressed in black and silver strode forward. "Ah, you must be the lovely Sheila," he observed, smiling at the terrified-looking vixen. Turning to the apparently-unconscious man, he nodded. "And this must be her guardian, though I'm surprised that he was captured so easily." Stepping back, he waved his hand in front of himself, casting a spell. "No, I don't think so. Not so easily. More like you let yourself be captured." When the man didn't reply the elf frowned. "I tire of this game, human. You twitched when I grabbed your hair, so I know you're not unconscious." "Paid?" Arden echoed with a quirky smile of his own. "I'm not being paid anything." "Oh, no," the elf replied, looking rather put out. "You're not one of those goody-goody types who feels obligated to help the poor and downtrodden, are you?" Arden ignored Hecate's derisive snort. "Actually, no. To be honest, I've spent most of my life as a paid assassin. This particular job just happens to be something that I'm doing for personal reasons." "Hmmm. That's too bad," the elf replied with a melancholy sigh. "You could have been of such use to me." Arden let out a started cry as one of the guards behind him plunged a dagger in, and then pulled it out. A second later, he heard the sound of a scream as the dagger dropped to the floor, the blade slowly being eaten away by his acidic blood. Taking this as their clue, Hecate released the spell she had been holding, tossing her two guards like rag dolls through the air and into the walls where they crumpled silently to the floor. Nobody paid much attention to them, though, as Arden grunted loudly, followed by the sharp snap of rope breaking. Freed of his bonds, he grabbed one guard, swung him around and smashed him into the shocked guards who'd been behind him, one cradling his wounded hand where the acid-like blood had splashed it. ------------------------------------------------------------------ .. The pyruvic acid was bound by bisulfite and the malic, fumaric, and lactic acids were separated from the pyruvic acid by extraction with ethyl ether. After removal of the bisulfite the pyruvic acid was recovered by ether extraction. The carboxyl group of pyruvate was then liberated by ceric sulfate oxidation (6). Rosebraugh says he doesn't know who is or is not a member. But he knows every detail of what they do and is well- established as the one and only authoritative ELF media contact. ELF is shy and restrained only when it comes to the identification of ELF activists who have committed some form of extreme vandalism. The evidence, so far, suggests most ELF activists are young and probably students in high school or college. Of the four so far arrested in connection with a series of burnings of new homes under construction on Long Island, New York, three were in high school; only the fourth was over age 21. The Federal Bureau of Investigation now considers ELF to be one of the nation's principal terrorist groups. Over the past decade of mounting eco-terrorism, Virginia was hardly aware of the subject . . . until January 30, 2001. That's when Craig Rosebraugh was invited to address an assembly of students, faculty, and visitors at Virginia Tech University. Elves on campus Fortunately, a few people in the Old Dominion were forewarned and alert. One of them was Bruce Griffith, a lumberman in southwest Virginia. In a matter of hours, he, Talley Griffith, and Jane Hogan from Southside, Virginia, like the Minute Men of 226 years ago in Massachusetts, had rallied a Virginia Treekeepers (TreeKeepers.org) delegation of citizens to make the long trip to protest and monitor Rosebraugh's appearance on the Tech campus. A drag queen, a drag queen with really hot elves ...elves as big as the sky! ... glbtminneapolis.blogs.com/blog/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.nesfa.org/reviews/Olson/LastHotTime.html The Last Hot Time is set in the Borderlands world used by a number of the Minneapolis writers. The Borderlands are the areas where the breakthrough of the Elven world into our own is strongest and elves and humans coexist. (Don't feel you need to know the Borderlands universe to enjoy the story - it's self- contained). The Borderlands Elves are not Tolkien's Elves, they're old and subtle and very, very chic, but they're people also with at least their proper human share of evil and stupidity (but they never dress unstylishly.) They're cruel to us and to each other, but they're physically gorgeous. They appreciate good music, but their society is riddled with class differences. Where the book is set is easy: Chicago - a Chicago which happens to be one of the borderlands areas and hence which is inhabited mostly by outcasts, both human and Elven: people with little connection to their own societies. It's a little harder to make out just when this book is set. Some things make it look like the near future, but the book is set in a world which looks a lot like 1930s Chicago. Never being quite sure when the setting was a constant minor irritant. The story follows a young man, an EMT, who sets out for Chicago for obscure reasons and, through luck, falls in with Mr. Patrise, a gang lord who takes him on as his in-house doctor. The gang's life is pretty good: they live in a fancy hotel owned by the gang, and dine at a night club owned by the gang. What do they do? It looks like they fight evil. Much of the story is about the gang lord's effort to locate and kill a particularly nasty renegade elf who is attempting to raise huge magical energies through something like necromancy practiced on living humans for some nefarious elvish purpose. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.vitatech.net/pdf/University_Clients.pdf George Washington University Psychiatric Laboratory, Medical College Center for Family Research, Ross Hall Washington, DC Susan L. "Dear Mr. Little Guy," she finally scrawled in big letters across a sheet of paper. "Do you like mints?" After some more pondering, she added, "and going to Camp Snoopy? Love, Shira." Mr. Little Guy was nowhere in sight this early August evening, so Shira stuffed her letter behind his door at the base of a hollowed out ash tree. It's always open, and always full -- of letters, pens, flowers and coins. The elusive elf has enchanted Twin Citians ever since the 6-inch wooden door appeared eight years ago, just off a walking path around popular Lake Harriet. Double takes led to messages, and messages to answers -- and somehow Mr. Little Guy keeps up, responding to the queries in typed notes half the size of business cards. They were not fully accepted as they did not fit in with either their human or high elf societies, or even night elves (who were suspicious of their high elven ancestry), and were viewed with prejudice by both of their parent races. While they were dedicated to helping the Alliance they also held the dream of settling their own nation and asked for help from the Alliance. Others felt like taking things into their own hands and left the alliance lands setting up settlements with or without support from their allies. However views have been changing in recent years and they are slowly being accepted by both of their parent races according to the Alliance Player's Guide, as wars and strife have proven how petty such prejudice is. They are also said to proud of their heritage, and name, though they tend to be fairly humble in nature. In many enlightened cities half-elves find little of the historic discrimination. Most humans have finally accepted them into society. Because humans are more easily accepting of them, they tend to socialize more with them. However some prejudice still exists especially from many high elves who are scornful of them and may or may not attempt to hide such feelings. Like their parents on both sides, half-elves revere the Holy Light. Half-elves are particularly fond of the philosophy, as it links them inextricably with both their human and elf parents. They consider the Light as a way of having an identity that they may otherwise lack. Some half-elves choose to follow their ancient legacy of druidism by becoming savagekin. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.pulsetc.com/article.php?sid=1259 Wolf said she was drawn to Nukewatch by its creative protests, and by longtime Nukewatch activists Bonnie Urfer and John LaForge. Such worldly concerns aside, physicists are silly with excitement. "Somebody described scientists like pigeons", said Brian Schwartz, a physicist at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. "You throw bread here, and everybody pecks here. Then you throw bread over there, and everybody pecks there". The record-holders are IBM researchers, led by Paul Grant, who pushed the threshold to 234 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Grant and company surpassed the report by Maeda of superconductivity onset at minus 243 degrees. It's in your Pepto-Bismol to keep you in the pink, which is the name of a pink-haired performer I've noticed more than once (and had "impure" thoughts that almost got started in my brain) who I am sure is not "naturally pink" like that so I'm not thinking about any "other hair" she might have, yet of course I am too thinking about that hair by trying not to think about it. What hair? There was not hairiness in this discussion of bismuth and bridges, so let's get back on track and not go off the bridge. That bridge fell down, went "boom" and everything. People are upset. Experts are on the scene (with rescue/recovery workers who got there earlier) to determine the cause of this bridge collapse which has ended lives, disrupted that entire city and region, threatened the future of all of them as well as the Republican party itself (thus impacting the world and the cosmos, which it wishes to rule) since they have a "big meetin'" written into the Book of Life in just about a year from now, and they'll need to keep on schedule. This was seriously considered before deciding that this cracked bell of liberty is a cherished symbol of America's struggle for freedom. Just as every man and woman carries wrinkles and creases of facial expressions as a visible sign of the stresses and strains they survived, the Liberty Bell with it's prominent crack reminds us that our forefathers did not win liberty for the country without strain, stress, and even fractures. So, on behalf of the American people, the officials thanked the London foundry for the generous offer, but declined, adding, "We like the bell as it is, crack and all. It is an important part of our heritage." Although we in public works inherit much infrastructure like sanitary sewers and streets with fractures and cracks, it is seldom that we would say to our communities, "We like that sewer the way it is, or let's keep this street as is and not repair the potholes and wide cracks." We set out and repair the failures, and upgrade the inadequacies. But all of these improvements are made by those with the faces of experience that carry the laugh and frown lines of history in the public works arena. Without the people, the lessons they have learned, the stories they have heard from our predecessors, and without the knowledge of the causes they championed, we would be like the colonists before they achieved freedom. For instance, while many of us may not appreciate the original clay sewer pipe put in the ground by previous public works leaders, without the concept of the pipe, we would still be digging holes and moving around outhouses. So while we repair our old cracks wherever they are, remember the public works forefathers and how they literally paved the way for our successes today. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Each module has an upper chord plate, which ultimately defines the corresponding part of the bridge deck, a spaced apart, parallel lower chord plate and an intermediate, sinusoidal support structure defined by webs which have a width substantially equal to the width of the chord plates so as to define a continuous lateral support for the upper chord plates at intermediate points over the length thereof. Load distributing ribs secured to the underside of the chord plates only are placed at unsupported portions of the upper chord plates between attachment points for the webs and have a width substantially equal to the combined width of all modules to tie the modules to each other and to distribute vehicular (point) loads over a relatively wide lateral extent of the chord plates. Also disclosed is a high strength mounting of lateral guard rails for the bridge, a method for constructing and erecting the modules, and the incorporation of the modules in more intricate bridge structures such as arch-type bridges. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/archives/archive79/ newposts/1064/topic1064910.shtm Subject: re: going wrinkly post id: 1065131 It's not just the swelling with water thing, there's another important factor in the equation - the skin is attached to the tissues underneath, so an increase in the area of your skin due to it swelling up can't just make your fingers twice as fat. The skin swells up, expanding in all directions, but because it is attached at many points beneath the surface, it buckles and forms the wrinkles. Think of it like a bridge expanding on a hot day - if the bridge was built without expansion joints, the heating will cause the bridge to buckle between the anchored points that can't move (e.g. the two ends of the bridge that are fixed to the ground). In the same way, your skin won't just swell up smoothly, like it does if you have a sprain (in which case, the anchor points are swelling and moving apart from each other, so the skin doesn't need to buckle, and indeed gets streched tighter) so it buckles and goes wrinkly. Because the anchor-points are in soft tissues, though, they can be pushed about a little bit by the force of the swelling and buckling, to allow the increased surface area of the skin to exist - like if you got a flat bit of paper, and pushed the two ends together, the paper in the middle will bow out, except that in the case of the skin, it is the bowing out that draws the two ends of the paper together... ------------------------------------------------------------------ 48. Gusset Plates Implicated in Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Linked to ... .... Plates, one suspect in the Minneapolis Bridge collapse, were linked to a bridge failure in Ohio in 1996. Such plates are prone to corrosion, rust and fatigue cracks http://www.yourlawyer.com/articles/read/12999 ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4261284.html Document Type and Number: United States Patent 4261284 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Many birds have eyes which are much superior to a human's eyes. Birds eyes enable them to identify dangerous prey or articles of food at great distance for survival purposes. Prior work to utilize the eyes of a pigeon was undertaken by Skinner during and subsequent to World War II. Skinner's research involved utilizing a trained pigeon in a transparent nosecone of a missile for guiding the missile to a target. There is no known research utilizing a bird, such as a pigeon for search purposes. As illustrated in FIGS. 2 through 7, a couch or cradle 50 may be mounted within each compartment for supporting a bird, such as a pigeon 52, with the head of the pigeon facing outwardly with respect to the observation chamber 28. As illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 6, the cradles 50 are positioned intermediate the height of the observation chamber so that there is provided bottom and top spacing. Further, as illustrated in FIG. 3, the cradles are positioned with a space between each cradle and the ring portion 34 of the chamber. As illustrated in FIG. 5, a cradle 50 may include an elongated arcuate support 54 which is connected in the aforementioned positions to respective bulkheads by gusset plates 56 and 58. These gusset plates are also spaced from the top and bottom of the chamber. Each arcuate member 54 of the cradle may be provided with padding 60 for the pigeon, and the pigeon may be held in place on the respective cradle by straps 62, these straps being secured at 64 by any suitable means such as Velcro. As illustrated in FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 6, a tray 72, which is adapted to contain food for the pigeon, is provided within each compartment 36, 38 and 40. Means are mounted within each compartment for sliding the respective tray outwardly or inwardly, the outward position being capable of presenting food to the pigeon and the inward position being capable of withdrawing food from the pigeon. The outward and inward positions are illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5. The tray sliding means may include an angled support plate 74 which is connected to the bottom inward portion of each respective gusset plate 58. A pair of guide rods 76 may be connected to the forward end of each support plate along opposite sides of the tray 72. The forward ends of the rods 76 may be connected by an angle plate 78 to the bottom of the respective gusset 58. A pair of bearing blocks 80 may be mounted at the rear on each side of a respective tray 72 for receiving the guide rods 76 so as to enable the outward and inward movements of the tray within a respective compartment. Each tray sliding means further includes a reversible power means, such as a reversible motor 82, which may be mounted on the top of a respective gusset plate 58 with its output shaft 84 extending downwardly therethrough. As illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 6, a pair of lever arms 86 and 88 may be provided, the lever arm 86 being connected to the output shaft 84 of the motor, the lever arm 88 being pivoted to the bottom of a respective tray 72 at 90, and the lever arms being pivotally connected together at 91. With this arrangement the reversible rotations of the motor 82 will slide the respective tray 72 outwardly and inwardly. The outer end of the gusset plate 58 may be hinged at 92, and a spring 93 may be provided for closing the end against the food tray 72. With this arrangement the gusset end can be raised to facilitate filling the food tray 72, and should a pigeon get his beak caught between the gusset plate and the tray when the tray is being withdrawn, the gusset end will spring upwardly to allow the pigeon to remove his beak. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.patentopedia.us/mask_with_gusset/ Mask with gusset Abstract A mask system for delivering air to a user includes a suspension mechanism to allow relative movement between a face-contacting cushion and a mask shell. Examination of the ELF isosurfaces indicates that their shapes are dependent on the coordination and geometry of the oxygen atoms and are not sensitive to coordination of the surrounding cations. Of the 18 crystallographically distinct oxygen atoms in the Al2SiO5 polymorphs, 13 are bonded to two aluminum atoms The four-fold coordinated oxygen (Al4 O) contains two concave hemispherical isosurfaces along the shorter Al O bonds and a banana-shaped isosurface, which encompasses the longer Al O bonds. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.vtmagazine.vt.edu/fall98/profile.html At 83, lively as an elf, Knobler rolls off to the fifth-graders names of legendary black players he's seen Twice a year, he visits Virginia Tech, where he is a member of the College of Engineering's advisory Committee of 100, the Materials Science Engineering advisory council, and Ut Prosim Society. The Associated Press ... bolts and cracking steel, the failed Minnesota bridge over the Mississippi River . http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/08/22/america/NA-GEN-... ST. PAUL, Minnesota: Pounded and strained by heavy traffic and weakened by missing bolts and cracking steel, the failed Minnesota bridge over the Mississippi River also faced a less obvious enemy: Birds. Inspectors began documenting the buildup of pigeon dung on the span near downtown Minneapolis two decades ago. Experts say the corrosive guano deposited all over the span's framework helped the steel beams rust faster. Pigeon droppings contain ammonia and acids, said chemist Neal Langerman, an officer with the health and safety division of the American Chemical Society. If the dung is not washed away, it dries out and turns into a concentrated salt. When water gets in and combines with the salt and ammonia, it creates small electrochemical reactions that rust the steel underneath. "Every time you get a little bit of moisture there, you wind up having a little bit of electrochemistry occurring and you wind up with corrosion," said Langerman. "Over a long term, it might in fact cause structural weaknesses." ------------------------------------------------------------------ 30. In keeping with cost containment, two primary obstacles existed. First, the University is situated in the mountains with most buildings surrounded by dense foliage. Second, thick stone building construction existed, making antenna placement difficult. Limited In-Building Coverage - For those buildings being bridged onto the campus network, the University desired future Wi-Fi access for students, faculty and staff. Initially however, the University did NOT want to activate the Wi-Fi access. The challenge was to provide the bridging and limit the Wi-Fi access through the use of a single wireless networking device. Through simple command line interface, this access will be activated, building-by-building as required. Devices - The University's connectivity requirements included students, faculty and staff members who would utilize virtually any 802.11b device. Coverage patterns for all locations were to support 11 Mbps transfer rates. Security - The University was deploying a centralized Authentication Server (AS) for both wired and wireless users. The wireless Wi-Fi users were NOT to utilize WEP or WPA in those areas where connectivity was being openly provided. Select users, including faculty and staff were to be equipped with Virtual Private Networking (VPN) software for selective secure access. The bridged building links were to be given unique parameters, which provided a level of security, encryption and generally limited user connectivity, until such time as the University desired to activate access. Specifically, Blue Elf proposed ViVato's 802.11b Wi-Fi Bridge Router. This versatile device (equipped with dual 200 mW radios) permits quality outdoor point-to-point bridging solutions, as well as expanded indoor coverage solutions. Through creative omni, yagi and patch antenna usage, unique solutions were deployed on a building-by-building basis. ViVato's Wireless Distribution System (WDS) software was extensively utilized throughout the installation, to reduce the use of cabled network connections. ViVato's Power over Ethernet (PoE) feature also allowed for equipment deployment in locations where providing power would have been extremely difficult Blue Elf overcame Wyndham's financial budget considerations by designing a truly cost effective Wi-Fi solution. The solution equipment included eleven high-powered dual 200mW RF (radio frequency) bridge/router devices. These devices, effectively representing twenty-two wireless Access Points, were directly connected to the existing Local Area Network in a single location via "home run" cabling. No power was required at each location as Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) was employed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Don't be a conspiracy theorist. 'Did you look under the sink?' I asked. 'What? You can look under the sink?' he said. After the unfortunate Chicken Incident, you see, our long- suffering plumbers replaced the metal pipes with clear plastic. Which is why we were able to see: five metal spatulas, three stir-bars, several unidentified bits of centrifuge tubes, and the requisite blob of brown gook. The plumber is currently plungering the sink, to very little effect. Ooh, he's opening up the main standpipe now. At least... this time it's not chicken. Solemn and cold over the marshes arose the evening. It became very still. Then the last pigeon went home to the trees on the dry land in the distance, whose shapes already had taken upon themselves a mystery in the haze. Then all was still again. As the light faded and the haze deepened, mystery crept nearer from every side. The Wild Things are somewhat human in appearance, only all brown of skin and barely two feet high. Their ears are pointed like the squirrel's, only far larger, and they leap to prodigious heights. Then something akin to discontent troubled the Wild Thing for the first time since the making of the marshes; and the soft gray ooze and the chill of the deep water seemed to be not enough, nor the first arrival from northwards of the tumultuous geese, nor the wild rejoicing of the wings of the wildfowl when every feather sings, nor the wonder of the calm ice that comes when the snipe depart and beards the rushes with frost and clothes the hushed waste with a mysterious haze where the sun goes red and low, nor even the dance of the Wild Things in the marvelous night; and the little Wild Thing longed to have a soul, and to go and worship God. At last the day of the Opera came round, and it was a cold day of the winter. And Signorina Russiano appeared on the stage before a crowded house. And Signorina Russiano sang. And into the song went all the longing of her soul, the soul that could not go to Paradise, but could only worship God and know the meaning of music, and the longing pervaded that Italian song as the infinite mystery of the hills is borne along the sound of distant sheep-bells. Then in the souls that were in that crowded house arose little memories of a great while since that were quite, quite dead, and lived awhile again during that marvelous song. And it felt the good dank air that clothes by night the broad East Anglian lands, and came again to some old perilous pool where the soft green mosses grew, and there plunged downward and downward into the dear dark water till it felt the homely ooze once more coming up between its toes. Thence, out of the lovely chill that is in the heart of the ooze, it arose renewed and rejoicing to dance upon the image of the stars. I chanced to stand that night by the marsh's edge, forgetting in my mind the affairs of men; and I saw the marsh-fires come leaping up from all the perilous places. And they came up by flocks the whole night long to the number of a great multitude, and danced away together over the marshes. And I believe that there was a great rejoicing all that night among the kith of the Elf-folk. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.allenvarney.com/ed_elf.html Over the decades, in lethal secrecy, Alachia has enlisted a few uncorrupted elves, never more than a dozen at a time, as spies. This is partly because there is no way of magicking iron, and partly that they have the ability to detect magnetic fields, and use them to navigate (as pigeons are thought to do) and even sense the thoughts of others from short distances. The presence of iron disrupts this and sends them into a panic. The main gateway to the world of Elves in Lancre is surrounded by several large boulders of naturally magnetised meteoric iron. Elves are ruled by a King and Queen. The Gardens and the Shrine. A Day in Old Athens, by William Stearns Davis (1910) Professor of Ancient History at the University of Minnesota 180. The Gardens and the Shrine.--Did we wish to linger, we could be shown the barnyard with its noisy retinue of hens, pheasants, guinea fowl, and pigeons; and we would be asked to admire the geese, cooped up and being gorged for fattening, or the stately peacocks preening their splendors. We would also hear sage disquisitions from the "oldest inhabitants" on the merits of fertilizers, especially on the uses of mixing seaweed with manure, also we would be told of the almost equally important process of burying a toad in a sealed jar in the midst of a field to save the corn from the crows and the field mice. Hybrias laughs at such superstitions--"but what can you say to the rustics?" Hybrias himself will display with more refined pride the gardens used by his wife and children when they come out from Athens,--a fountain feeding a delightful rivulet; myrtles, roses, and pomegranate trees shedding their perfumes, which are mingled with the odors from the beds of hyacinths, violets, and asphodel. In the center of the gardens rises a chaste little shrine with a marble image and an altar, always covered with flowers or fruit by the mistress and her women. "To Artemis," reads the inscription, and one is sure that the virgin goddess takes more pleasure in this fragrant temple than in many loftier fanes ------------------------------------------------------------------ 88. Copyright notice Amino acid transport by resealed ghosts from pigeon erythrocytes. K P Wheeler ABSTRCT Resealed ghosts from pigeon erythrocytes were shown to haemolyse during incubation in isotonic media with pH values greater than about 7 and high concentrations of Na+ inside the ghosts seemed to enhance this effect. At lower pH values the ghosts were stable but still highly permeable to Na+ and K+, and moderately permeable to sucrose. Under the latter conditions the ghosts transported amino acids in a way qualitatively but not quantitatively similar to intact erythrocytes. The Na+-dependent transport of serine and alanine by the ghosts consisted essentially of an exchange of extracellular for intracellular amino acids, with no significant net flux. In contrast, net fluxes of glycine in the direction of the Na+-concentration gradient across the ghost membrane were demonstrated. However, under one condition a small net influx of glycine occurred against the prevailing Na+-concentration gradient. Unlike Na+- dependent glycine uptake, the uptake of six other amino acids by intact pigeon erythrocytes was not influenced by the nature of the anion present. The significance of these findings in relation to previous work on the Na+-gradient hypothesis of membrane transport is discussed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 22. The major product of the reaction in the absence of TPNH is TAL, and not free triacetic acid. Presumably triacetic acid, bound as a thioester to the 4'- phosphopantetheine prosthetic group of the fatty acid synthetase, is an intermediate in the formation of TAL. In one aspect, the guanidinium moiety is found within the backbone of the polymer. In this aspect, the polymer backbone comprises at least two atoms of the guanidinium group. In another aspect, the guanidinium moiety-containing polymer compositions comprise polymers with guanidinium substituents which are pendant from the backbone. For example, the polymer can comprise an aliphatic backbone bearing pendant guanidinium groups which can be further substituted. Guanidinium ions form characteristic pairs of zwitterionic hydrogen bonds with carboxylate anions. This type of binding, which combines electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonded structural organization, can lead to enhanced binding strength. Additionally, the combination of electrostatic and ionic hydrogen bonding ability can enable such guanidinium moiety- containing polymer compositions to be more selective anion receptors for carboxylate anions such as bile acid salts. Since increased binding strength and selectivity is indicative of increased efficacy, the guanidinium moiety-containing polymer compositions of the invention represent an improvement over certain known bile acid sequestrants. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Pigeon pea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Pigeon peas are nutritionally important, as they contain high levels of protein and the important amino acids methionine, lysine, and tryptophan. ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigeon_pea ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/product.biblio.jsp?osti_id= 7132352 Energy Citations Database 560300 -- Chemicals Metabolism & Toxicology; ARACHIDONIC ACID-- BIOCHEMISTRY;ARACHIDONIC ACID-- METABOLITES;DUSTS-- BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS;DUSTS-- INHALATION;LUNGS-- HISTOLOGY; COTTON;IN VITRO;IN VIVO;MACROPHAGES;PATHOLOGICAL CHANGES;RATS;TRITIUM COMPOUNDS It was considered that the fall in lung function seen after exposure to cotton dust may be attributable in part to the activity of arachidonic acid metabolites, such as leucotrienes as well as to the more established release of histamine by cotton dust. However, we found that cotton and barley dusts elicited poor release of arachidonic acid from an established macrophage like cell line compared with that observed with other organic dusts.^ In the experimental animal, pulmonary cellular responses to both cotton and barley dust were similar to those evoked by moldy hay and pigeon dropping dusts, although after multiple doses a more severe response was seen to cotton and barely Since both moldy hay and pigeon droppings elicit a greater arachidonic acid release than cotton or barley, a role for arachidonic acid in inducing the cellular response is less likely than other factors. There are limitations to our conclusions using this system, i.e., the arachidonic acid may be released in a nonmetabolized form, although it is noted that the two dusts with the greatest arachidonic acid release produce their clinical responses in humans largely by hypersensitivity mechanisms. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. F. Hall. "Oh fy!" said the king. "'No sooner had we got rid of these birds, which occasioned us great annoyance, than we were terrified by the appearance of a fowl of another kind, and infinitely larger than even the rocs which I met in my former voyages; for it was bigger than the biggest of the domes on your seraglio, oh, most Munificent of Caliphs. This terrible fowl had no head that we could perceive, but was fashioned entirely of belly, which was of a prodigious fatness and roundness, of a soft-looking substance, smooth, shining and striped with various colors. In its talons, the monster was bearing away to his eyrie in the heavens, a house from which it had knocked off the roof, and in the interior of which we distinctly saw human beings, who, beyond doubt, were in a state of frightful despair at the horrible fate which awaited them. We shouted with all our might, in the hope of frightening the bird into letting go of its prey, but it merely gave a snort or puff, as if of rage and then let fall upon our heads a heavy sack which proved to be filled with sand!'"
