For first time, HALF of those surveyed STRONLY DISAPPROVE of Bush's

job performance!!!

Half of the 1,024 adults surveyed over the weekend "strongly

disapprove" of the job President Bush is doing, a new USA TODAY/Gallup

Poll shows.

This marks the first time Bush's "strongly disapprove" rating has hit

50% and is an increase from 44% the last time that question was asked

about him, in late February 2006.

It also is the first time -- at least in in recent history -- that the

job performance of any president has been strongly disapproved of by

50% of those surveyed nationally by Gallup, according to records

shared with us by USA TODAY polling editor Jim Norman.

The president who came closest:

Richard Nixon, who in February 1974 -- six months before he resigned

from office -- was "strongly" disapproved of by 48% of the public in

Gallup's surveying. President Carter's highest "strongly disapprove"

number: 33%, in July 1979. President Clinton's: 34%, in July 1994.

On the flip side of the questions, President Bush's "strongly approve"

rating has fallen to a new low: 14%.

Of the remainder in the survey, 17% said they "moderately approve" of

Bush's job performance and 14% said they "moderately disapprove." The

other 5% had no opinion.

The USA TODAY/Gallup Poll routinely asks a generic approval/

disapproval question about presidents while they are in office.

In the latest poll, Bush's more general approval/disapproval ratings

stood at 31% and 64%, respectively -- vs. 32% and 64% in mid-October.

The poll has broken Bush's approval/disapproval ratings into the more

specific "strongly" and "moderately" categories 11 times since October

2001.

Bush's "strongly disapprove" numbers over the years:

Oct. 5-6, 2001: 5%.

Sept. 19-21, 2003: 32%.

May 21-23, 2004: 37%.

July 19-21, 2004: 35%.

Oct. 14-16, 2004: 37%.

Nov. 19-21, 2004: 31%.

Jan. 14-16, 2005: 34%.

Aug. 5-7, 2005: 38%.

Dec. 9-11, 2005: 43%.

Feb. 28-March 1, 2006: 44%.

Nov. 2-4, 2007: 50%.

The latest numbers have a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.

More results from the poll will be released in coming days at

USATODAY.com and in USA TODAY, the newspaper.

The 14% who still strongly "approve" are all either military

contractors or Right-Wing Fundamentalist wack-jobs who are praying for

the Apocalypse.
