Can't turn on MSE real time protection.

All of a sudden i can't turn on MSE real time protection. it just times out. Also, I can't do a Windows Update. It says the service is not running and to reboot. Doesn't help. Running W7. Only change to the system was I got a few SVCHost errors recently. Wondering if I have a virus, but I scanned using MSE with latest definitions and it didn't find anything. Help?
