FORT WORTH - A three-year-old child died Friday morning when fire swept

through an apartment building in East Fort Worth as his mother was away from

home.

The young victim was found just five feet from the front door. He was in the

kitchen, not far from where investigators believe the fire started.

"The flames were extremely intense coming from inside that door," said Fort

Worth Fire Department spokesman Lt. Kent Worley. "Based on that information

and where the child was found, there was nothing that anybody could do at

that point in time."

At least six people were injured in the blaze at the Villa Supreme

apartments in the 3800 block of Stalcup Road.

One unit was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around

8:45 a.m.

Aerial images of the fire scene showed black soot tracing the route of thick

smoke rising from a downstairs window of the two-story brick building.

Emotions ran high at the scene of the fire. Firefighters moved a red tarp

over the window as they dealt with removing the young victim.

"It's a lot of grief, it's a lot of grief going on right now with the family

members," said Melvelyn Keller, the dead child's great aunt. "It's just a

sad situation."

Among the injured was a 13-year-old girl who was babysitting her

three-year-old cousin and her sister. A Fort Worth fire official said the

teen woke up at about 8:40 a.m. and saw fire.

She suffered burns to her back as she jumped to safety through a window. No

adults were inside the apartment unit at the time.

All those injured were expected to survive.

Family members said the dead child's mother was away at a doctor's

appointment when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
