Guest Patriot Games
http://www.newsmax.com/us/democratic_fundraiser/2007/09/08/31063.html Fundraiser Hsu to Go to State Court Saturday, September 8, 2007 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Disgraced Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu, who failed to show up for a California court date related to a felony theft conviction, will be handed over to local authorities when he is released from a hospital, a spokeswoman said Saturday. Hsu had been scheduled to appear in a San Francisco court Wednesday but disappeared until Thursday, when Amtrak officials called the Grand Junction fire department to report a passenger had become ill on the California Zephyr. Officials at St. Mary's Hospital have declined to say what ails Hsu, although hospital vice president Dan Prinster has said he "was delirious." Hospital spokeswoman Samantha Moe said Hsu was in fair condition Saturday, but said she could release no other information. "My understanding is that after he is released from the hospital he will be booked into our facility," Heather Benjamin, spokeswoman for the Mesa County sheriff, said Saturday. Jason Booth, a spokesman for Hsu's lawyer, said the hospital had not allowed him to see Hsu and would not give him details about his condition. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wyatt Angelo told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel he would go through local courts for an extradition hearing. Jeff Dorschner, Denver spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Colorado, confirmed the newspaper report. The New York City-based Hsu has been a top fundraiser for Democratic candidates, including U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, donating $260,000 to Democratic Party groups and federal candidates since 2004, according to Federal Election Commission records. Hsu had been scheduled to appear in a San Francisco court Wednesday to turn over his passport and ask a judge to cut in half the $2 million bail he posted last week when he turned himself in after spending 15 years on the lam from a felony theft conviction. An arrest warrant was issued when he failed to appear at the hearing, and after his discovery in Grand Junction he was arrested on federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, FBI spokesman Joseph Schadler said at a news conference in San Francisco. It was not clear whether he would fight extradition. Prosecutors say Hsu bilked investors out of $1 million by telling them he had a contract to buy and sell latex gloves, but he never purchased the gloves and had no contract to sell them. He pleaded no contest in 1991 to a felony count of grand theft and was facing up to three years in prison, but he skipped town before his 1992 sentencing date. Investigators believed he'd fled to Hong Kong. Years later, he resurfaced as a top fundraiser, donating $260,000 to Democratic Party groups and federal candidates since 2004, according to Federal Election Commission records. Several Democratic politicians have announced plans to return or donate to charity Hsu's election contributions. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Thursday he would donate nearly $40,000 in contributions, and Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo. said Friday he donated a $1,000 contribution to a charity that helps soldiers. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., has said she plans to give to charity $23,000 in donations she received from Hsu for her presidential and senatorial campaigns and to her political action committee, HillPac.
