BELLEVUE, Neb. -- A Bellevue apartment fire claimed the lives of three
people, including two children and a 16-year-old baby sitter, and was
apparently started by a child playing with a lighter, authorities said.

The victims are 16-year-old Almadelie Guevara, 2-year-old Nevaeh Estrada,
and 11-month old Angela Zamarripa.

Four other children escaped the fire and are now in foster care.

The seven children were inside an apartment at the Southgate Townhomes, at
2846 Kansas Drive. Police said the call for help was received at about 10
a.m. and two officers and an arson investigator went to check it out. Capt.
Herb Evers of the Bellevue Police Department said there was so much smoke
and heat that the crew members could not get in -- in part because they did
not have the proper equipment with them -- and they called for backup.

Police said the 16-year-old was found dead inside the apartment. Two
children -- ages 2 and 11 months -- were taken to a hospital, where they
died.

A 16-year-old girl, who was related to all but one of the children, was
baby-sitting the rest when the blaze started, authorities said. She died in
the fire.

Two women, who told KETV NewsWatch 7 that they are related to the teen, said
she was an aunt to some of the children in her care.

Fire crews said there was no fire alarm sounding when they arrived at the
apartment. They said their investigation did not show any exits blocked and
they aren't sure why the victims couldn't get out.

Emotions High For Rescuers

Evers said the first officers at the scene are in a bad emotional state.

"They have kids. They were unable to save the lives of (an infant). It's
very emotional for them," Evers said.

Case Considered Criminal Investigation

A witness said she saw two young boys from the apartment get out. A
7-year-old boy told the witness he was lighting things on fire.

Bellevue fire officials said it appears that the 7-year-old was playing with
a lighter and that is what started the blaze in one of the bedrooms
upstairs. Police interviewed three children about what happened.

The blaze is considered a criminal investigation, police said. Fire crews
said the Sarpy County Attorney's Office will decide whether charges against
the child are warranted.

Police said four children -- ages 7, 4, 3 and 4 months -- escaped the blaze.
Cacilia Carmona said her baby was saved from the fire, and through tears,
she thanked whoever got the child to safety. Carmona said she lives next
door to the apartment that burned.

Authorities said one of the children was able to save the 4-month-old girl.

What's Next?

The children are in the care of Child Protective Services.

The women who rents the apartment was released Wednesday from the Sarpy
County Jail after posting a signature bond. Cecilla M Guevara, the mother of
the teen that died in the fire, and the grandmother of the two younger fire
victims was being held on a shoplifting charge.

A hearing is set for August 1st to on a motion to remove Guevara's other
children from her home.

was released from the jail late Wednesday afternoon. Officials said she was
being held on a shoplifting charge, and was released on a

The Red Cross is at the scene helping neighbors and firefighters cope with
the heat.

An autopsy is scheduled, and authorities said they expect results on Friday.

Evers said it is his priority to get support for the officers and
firefighters who have to deal with the aftermath.
