So, yeah, I am basically computer dumb.. I can do the fundamentals, but am completely lost when it comes to anything else.. So here is my question to anyone who can answer it:

I am using a Windows XP system- How do I stop all the **** from popping up at start up? Like this morning, I couldn't sleep and I decided to get on the computer, it took me nearly 20 minutes for my computer to completely load up. Its not an old computer, maybe a year. And there isn't much on it, we just dumped the whole system, but with my family downloading stuff, we now have 50,000 programs(or so it seems) that load up on start up.. So, how can I stop these from loading up automatically.. Most of the stuff the loads up, we don't use that much, but is still necessary so I don't wanna get ride of it. I just want to stop it from loading up every time I turn on the **** computer.

Thanks anyone who can help.

weeeell, firstly all that windows updates and firewall **** can be kill by going to control panel>security centre>then there is a box top left and teh last "link" is "change the way security cente alerts me" then untick those boxes

then all those programs that start up, just look if they are used by you/anotehr person and if they are not got to control panel>add or remove programs and remove them from the list if they are not used

thats it :)

if theyre just programs like MSN or limewire that come up, jst go to options and go to where it may say "open in start up" and just get rid of em

Also you can go to

Start

Run - type in msconfig

Hit Enter

Then go to the tab that says Startup and just disable all the ones you don't need.

I use a programm called pc optimizer

you can get it here

http://www.pcoptimizerpro.com/

it let's u easily handle start up programes and also is easy to uninstall stuff that's not neccessary.

it will also check your registery for bugs and fix those errors...

It will make your computer faster for sure

I usually just leave mine on standby, then you can come back to it whenever and it takes no time to load up.

Not very good for the environment though lol.

That's exactly what I'd do. I bought a laptop off of a friend and when I first started it up I witnessed a 10 minute wait due to him preloading it with every program possible. I'd personally make it so only the bare essentials load up at the start. It's faster for you and saves CPU usage.

I didn't have this question and I didn't have a problem, but those ******* popups have been driving me CRAZY. I never use any of the Windows Updates / Firewall **** and I hate those **** balloon popup things LOL

So omg thanks so much for showing me how to get rid of them :)

But yeah thats the best way to stop all the **** coming up if your a nervice user and don't get sucked into using programs like pc optimizer. And learn something and go to a computer forum and become a pro at the computer hehe :)

Thats your best bet. But if you dont know what something is, leave it alone. Windows, Java, stuff for your video card and sound card, yeah, dont touch em.

Only problem with that is that over time, as you open and close programs, little things will often be left behind and chew up memory and slow things down. A good old restart every once and a while would be helpful to your comp.

What would you suggest to speed up my computer.. It isn't slow, but sometimes it has its moments where I just wana shoot it.. Also, I know my computer has got to be infested with spyware and ****, because I am getting pop-ups left and right, though I have a pop-up blocker, which program should I use( I would perfer a free one) I know about ad-aware, but it doesn't work that well, because I know there is still **** on my computer.

just a random question, do you guys know why like when you first buy a computer, why it takes so long for the disk cleanup to start? for some reason, ever since I first got this computer in Feb 05, I've always had to wait a century for the disk cleanup utility to run. I've never sat and waited it out because it just takes so **** long. I used to use it a lot on my old computer but now I never can cause it takes so long.

Here is the newest for me and now I need more help:

Last night I ran my virus/spyware ****. It came up with like 6 diffrent things, but It didn't delete them or clean them like it is supposed to.. So, I thought I would try to just simply delete the infected files.. No such luck, due to the fact it is in like c:\WINDOWS\system32\something else.

What can I do to get rid of the infected files?

Edit:

Ohh yeah, and I have this going on ALL THE TIME!
