Guest NewsBot
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Grilled chicken replaced the hot dogs. Strawberries instead of cookies at snack time. No more fruit juice - water or low-fat milk only. This is the new menu at a Delaware day care center, part of a fledgling movement to take the fight against obesity to pudgy preschoolers.... Ahhlee
GOOD! Kids are served absolute crap in daycares and in schools. I understand the planners are dealing with a limited budget but so many more things could be made from scratch rather than doling out processed garbage. Did you know that at our local high school ketchup counts as a vegetable serving???? Unbelievable. Children who are served fresh fruits and vegetables have more energy, are better behaved and score higher on tests than their counterparts who eat junk food and drink soda. After I had my surgery, I was given a doctor's permit to order off the children's menu in restaurants because they serve smaller portions. But I never order off that menu because it's all processed and fried foods...hardly a healthy option. I'd rather order a too big salad instead and take the leftovers home. Yes, I think what our nation's kids are being fed is deplorable.
mercury
They serve actual home made/made from scratch type stuff in the cafeteria here, the kids like the food better than anything I would pack for them, and it's probably more healthy, too. Everything in Florida came from a box or package and cost twice as much to feed them at school. And one thing that really ticked me off was that they couldn't buy a milk unless they were buying a full lunch. WTF is up with that? Saline was somewhere in the middle. The kids always had access to salad bar and fresh fruit, but a lot of the other stuff was pre-packaged. They've been serving crap in schools for along time, though... it's about time they caught up with the the times and got healthier.

It's ridiculous considering how many people in the region are folks who still prefer their food made from scratch. Many other little schools in the area have amazing lunches that are homemade and healthy, but ours takes the processed route most meals. A friend of mine who used to teach here had to start packing her own lunch because she gained weight from eating what they served.
