Eliot Spitzer was nailed by longtime GOP political strategist Roger Stone, the New York Post reported Sunday. According to the newspaper, the former Nixon strategist famed for his hard-nosed and often ingenious political gimmicks sent the FBI a letter detailing Spitzer's use of high-class call girls -- four months before the story made headlines. The Post reported that Stone's information was so complete that it included such details as Spitzer's bizarre habit of wearing calf-length black socks while having sex with prostitutes. Apparently ignoring the adage that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, Stone threw his despite his own sexual indiscretions. The Post noted that Stone is no stranger to scandal, adding that he was dumped as an operative from Bob Dole's 1996 GOP presidential campaign after he and his wife placed a personal ad in a swingers magazine. Stone has denied the allegation and insists he was the victim of dirty politics. A letter written by Stone's lawyer, Paul Rolf Jensen, alleged that Spitzer "paid literally tens of thousands of dollars for these services," and added that he "paid not with credit cards or cash but through some pre-arranged transfer." The Post wrote that Stone's lawyer wrote to the FBI after investigators asked to speak with Stone, although they didn't specify for what purpose. He refused to talk to them, but sent the letter about Spitzer. "It is also my client's understanding from the same source that Governor Spitzer did not remove his mid-calf-length black socks during the sex act. Perhaps you can use this detail to corroborate Mr. Stone's information," according to the letter, which was first reported by the Miami Herald. Stone refused to comment on the letter, but asked the Post: "What kind of guy does it with his socks on?"
