DESCENDING INTO THE INCENDIARY

Be patient, they tell you. It is so difficult to be rational,

to be calm when one's hair is on fire, when the need to

roll oneself on the carpet seems to trump all other considerations

of appearances or the slanderous opinions of onlookers.

Everything seems so tranquil when you take a walk by the Old School.

How did the fire start? With nonstandard cabling, wound by virgins

with sensitive fingers on a cardboard spool?

Perhaps the fires start leaping because sparked by unfair labeling.

I submit that the girlfriends who kissed at the Covenant Academy

sleepover party did not violate the school's discipline code

of officially mandated revulsion, because the rules do not

specifically state that same-sex kissing is grounds for expulsion.

The police said if anyone was killed I should be held

responsible and hanged. I replied calmly that I would consider

it an honor to be legally charged with the absurdly redundant

offense of simply giving offense, and to be hanged for language.

I am guilty as charged, electrically speaking, of dramatic

static, for creating a long trail of scorched carpets and

molten plastic.

Police raided the Power Plant, issuing three hundred-fifty

misdemeanor citations, thereby creating for themselves

the dangerous illusion that they were in complete control

of the situation.

Later, in Hobart, I received an OHMS letter, informing me

that I had been selected by ballot for coal mining as an

alternative to military service. The underground fires have

been burning there since 1946, since the end of the war,

self-sustained by gases like methane and hydrogen.

When will our society grow up and realize that preaching of hellfire

is merely inflammatory rhetoric? Church burnings are surely

God's method of payback for incendiary mythology and blood libels

concerning the burning of Sodom and Gomorrah. The folks who preach

such things are the last to acknowledge the righteousness

of the burnings of Atlanta and Richmond, or Sherman's fiery

March to the Sea.

FIRE announces its Speech Code of the Month for May 2007: Texas

A&M University. Texas A&M's policy on Student Rights and

"respect for personal feelings" and "freedom from indignity of

hurting someone's feelings at Texas A&M University. Legally

speaking, this policy is not worth the paper on which it is

written. It is overbroad, it is vague, and it conditions the

permissibility of speech on subjective listener reaction.

a cave hollowed out of the side of the bank of the stream. Its

walls were stained with soot, and a rank bed was in one corner.

What happened I asked, you like it he queried with obvious pride,

Instead he took me on a tour, look he said here is the furnace.

A 10 meter unfenced deep hole filled with rancid looking water

greeted me. In the water a rusting furnace sat. oh I asked so

you have hot water then, yes he replied climbing a large tumbled

pile of builders bricks. Over here. He shown me several pallets

his eye glinted proudly at me as he walked me round the pile.

OHMS letter arrives and puts the question would I like to

volunteer for UNDERGROUND Mining as an alternative to Military

Service, my answer to that was to file it in the BIN! However a

short time latter I received yet another OHMS letter this

informed me I had been SELECTED by BALLOT for Coal Mining after

training in Yorkshire. The only grounds of appeal were MEDICAL,

this after passing A1 fit for the Royal Marines however I

appealed as an "Acute Claustrophobic", at the appeal I met 24

other Acute Claustrophobic's and we all got the same answer

"Bad luck lad you are in the Mines

The then Minister of Labour Mr Ernest Bevin was set the task of

finding 50,000 workers to replace the missing miners who were

valuable where they were now doing their bit, his first attempt

was to contact all Headmasters of Senior Schools to enlist their

help in persuading the boys to go Coalmining instead of joining

the military, he had of course NOT A HOPE IN HELL, lads saw

nothing attractive about that prospect, his PA then came up with

the lottery idea so into his Bowler Hat went numbers 0 to 9 and

lo and behold out came 0 and 9 as the first groups to be called,

the only lottery I have ever won.

The Fairfax Mining Co., Inc., #3 Mine, I. D. 46-08633, is

located ten miles west of Clarksburg, in Harrison County, West

Virginia. The mine is accessed by 5 drift openings from a box-

cut into the Pittsburgh coal seam, which averages 55 inches in

thickness. A single blowing mine fan provided 86,700 cubic feet

of air per minute at the drift opening to the main intake air

course. The mine liberated 22,395 cubic feet of methane in a 24-

hour period. Coal was produced by advancing entries with remote-

controlled, scrubber-equipped, continuous mining machines.

Employment was provided for 67 underground and 6 surface

employees. The mine operated three shifts per day, five days per

week, producing 2,500 tons of raw coal daily from two continuous

mining machine units. Coal production was primarily achieved on

day and afternoon shifts. Maintenance crews were scheduled on

midnight shifts, which occasionally engage in limited coal

production.

At approximately 9:20 a.m., the section conveyor belts stopped.

Donald Nickels, Chief Maintenance Foreman, and Sean Fletcher,

Roof Bolter Operator, entered the mine to check the belts and

found that the first two belt conveyor flights were still

operating. However, the third flight (#1-3NW Belt) had stopped.

Each time they reset the control circuit and started the #1 3NW

Belt, the belt slippage protective device tripped, stopping the

drive motor. Donald Nickels noticed spillage at this belt drive

and assigned Sean Fletcher to clean the drive area with a water

hose.

Donald Nickels intended to check for problems at the #1-3NW Belt

tailpiece. However, he smelled smoke as soon as he entered the

track entry, which he reported by mine phone to Johnny Nickels,

Mine Superintendent. Donald Nickels and Sean Fletcher then

entered the adjacent primary escapeway and walked to the surface.

Meanwhile, Johnny Nickels had radioed Paul Smith, Surface

Electrician, and asked him to enter the mine and open the

haulage airlock doors, located near the drift openings, to help

clear smoke from the track entry. However, Smith did not have a

self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) and could not enter the mine.

Bill Currence, who was still at the 1 West E Section mine phone,

overheard Smith tell Johnny Nickels that smoke was coming out

the track haulage airlock doors. However, Currence was still

unable to reply to persons on the surface. He then obtained a

track bus and rode outby to assist in locating the problem,

accompanied by Craig Currence, General Laborer.

Johnny Nickels checked the fire detection system control box in

the maintenance foremen's office, which was showing a line short

alarm, as indicated by a light (Line Short Lamp) on the panel

cover (no audible signal was provided for this type of alarm).

Outside the mine office Johnny Nickels met Richard Herndon, MSHA

Coal Mine Inspector, who had finished testing the brakes on the

front end loader for the ongoing Safety and Health Inspection.

After being informed of the situation, Herndon issued a verbal K-

Order and informed Nickels that the miners need to be evacuated

from the mine. Herndon accompanied Johnny Nickels into the box

cut, where they observed smoke flowing out of the belt entry

drift opening. Johnny Nickels tried again to order an evacuation

over the mine phone, but he received no response from the

sections.

Line monitors were connected at the end of each branch network

cable (near each section loading point), which paralleled the

branch cables within the network circuit. The internal resistors

of each line monitor were adjusted so that the total network

resistance measured at the Control Panel equaled 15,000 ohms.

During normal operating conditions, the line monitors permitted

a small current to flow through the network so that the Control

Panel's monitoring circuit could determine the system's ability

to detect a fire. For example, when an open circuit condition

occurred, the current flow should have dropped to zero and the

Control Panel's line monitor meter would display a zero

indication (See Appendix B, Figure #6).

The malfunction of heat sensors closest to the fire origin could

have also resulted in delayed actuation of the Fire Suppression

System. However, sufficient evidence was not found to confirm or

rule out this possibility, since the sensors were destroyed by

the fire. If a sensor had malfunctioned and the fire continued

to intensify, tests indicated that the insulation on the network

conductors would have melted at temperatures between 365 degrees F

to 369 degrees F

As the intimidation by mine guards increased, national labor

leaders, including Mary Harris "Mother" Jones, began arriving on

the scene. Jones, a native of Ireland, was already a major force

in the American labor movement before first coming to West

Virginia during the 1897 strikes. Although she reported the year

of her birth as 1830, recent research indicates she was probably

born in 1845. As a leader of the UMWA's efforts to organize the

state, Jones became known for her fiery (and often obscene)

verbal attacks on coal operators and politicians.

Families of miners who had joined the union were evicted from

their company-owned houses. The town's chief of police, Sid

Hatfield, encouraged Matewan residents to arm themselves.

Gunfire erupted when Albert and Lee Felts attempted to arrest

Hatfield. At the end of the battle, seven detectives and four

townspeople lay dead, including Mayor C. C. Testerman. Shortly

thereafter, Hatfield married Testerman's widow, Jessie,

prompting speculation that Hatfield himself had shot the mayor.

Non-union mines were dynamited miners' tent colonies were

attacked, and there were numerous deaths on both sides of the

cause.

A CSIRO scientist is on his way to the United States to help

extinguish an underground coal fire burning for more than 10

weeks.

The coal seam fire has been burning 200m underground at the

Loveridge Mine in West Virginia since January 7 and all attempts

to extinguish it the have failed.

CSIRO Exploration and Mining project leader Patrick Glynn said

the GAG had been operating successfully in Queensland since 1998.

"In 2000 it was used to extinguish a fire in the Blair Athol

mine in Queensland that had been burning since 1946,"

says Mr Glynn.

"These sorts of fires can burn for that long because once

established, even if it uses up most of the available oxygen in

the mine, the fire itself releases other gases like methane and

eventually hydrogen that can make it almost self-sustaining," Mr

Glynn said.

The Autobiography of Mother Jones

Chapter XXVII: Progress in Spite of Leaders

Other strikes come to my mind, strikes of less fire and flame

and hence attracting less national notice. The papers proclaimed

to stockholders and investors that there was peace, and there

was no peace. The garment workers struck and won. In Roosevelt,

New Jersey, the workingmen in the fertilizing plant of Williams

and Clark struck.

Two strikers were shot dead -- shot in the back by the hired

gunmen. The guards were arraigned, let out on bail, and reported

back on the job. The strikers were assembled in a vacant lot.

Guards shot into their midst, firing low and filling the legs of

the workers with bullets.

"Mother," the strikers wrote to me, "come help us with our women."

I went. "Women," said I, "see that your husbands use no fire

arms or violence no matter what the provocation. Don't let your

husbands scab. Help them stand firm and above all keep them from

the saloons. No strike was ever won that did not have the

support of the womenfolk."

I spoke to a mass meeting of carmen's wives and we certainly had

those women fighting like wildcats. They threatened me with jail

and I told the police I could raise as much hell in jail as out.

The police said if anyone was killed I should be held

responsible and hanged.

"If they want to hang me, let them," I said. "And on the

scaffold I will shout 'Freedom for the working class!' And when

I meet God Almighty I will tell him to damn my accusers and the

accusers of the working class, the people who tend and develop

and beautify His world."

Power-dressing man leaves trail of destruction

Fri Sep 16,10:30 AM ET

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man built up a 40,000-volt

charge of static electricity in his clothes as he walked,

leaving a trail of scorched carpet and molten plastic and

forcing firefighters to evacuate a building

When he walked into a building in the country town of

Warrnambool in the southern state of Victoria Thursday, the

electrical charge ignited the carpet.

"It sounded almost like a firecracker," Clewer told Australian

radio Friday.

Employees, unsure of the cause of the mysterious burning smell,

telephoned firefighters who evacuated the building.

"There were several scorch marks in the carpet, and we could

hear a cracking noise -- a bit like a whip -- both inside and

outside the building," said fire official Henry Barton.

Firefighters cut electricity to the building thinking the burns

might have been caused by a power surge.

David Gosden, a senior lecturer in electrical engineering at

Sydney University, told Reuters that for a static electricity

charge to ignite a carpet, conditions had to be perfect.

The club operator was arrested on several charges, including

operating an illegal establishment and selling alcohol without a

illegal trespass were issued to the club's patrons, and more

than 150 cars were impounded and towed from the scene.

Reportedly, 50 to 100 officers stormed the premises dressed in

black clothing and using laser sights, causing panic among

patrons. Patrons were bound with their hands behind their back

and forced to lay face-down on the concrete floor, in some cases

for more than eight hours. Reports indicate that those arrested

were not permitted to use the bathroom and several were forced

to relieve themselves where they lay. Some reported being kicked

in the head and back, slammed into walls and verbally abused.

Reportedly, officers were heard saying, "Those fags in there

they were acting on complaints from neighbors and were acting in

response to concerns of public safety.

Equality unveiled the first phase of the "We Are Your Neighbors"

campaign in July, placing ads on 12 billboards within a 75-mile

Police rookie sacked over gay slurs. The Atlanta Police

Department fired Officer Larry Smith on Sept. 7. He was accused

of using anti-gay slurs while arresting six gay men in Piedmont

Park for being in the park after its 11 p.m. closing time. The

The men accused Smith of calling them "faggots" and "cockroaches"

as they were handcuffed and forced to sit on a curb for three

hours while Smith continued to make arrests in the park. The gay

men were eventually fined and/or sentenced to community service.

School expels lesbian over kiss. Jessica Bradley, 15, sued the

private Covenant Christian Academy in Loganville, Ga., for $1

million for being expelled for violating the school's "sexual

immorality" criteria. Bradley acknowledges in the lawsuit that a

fellow female Covenant Academy student kissed her at a private

sleepover party away from school property, and also that she had

been in a relationship with a different girl. But Bradley denies

that her behavior violated the school's discipline code because

the rules do not specifically state same-sex kissing is grounds

for expulsion.

A car caught on fire on in front of Boston University Chancellor

John Silber's house at 10 Lenox Street at about 7:26 p.m. last

night, according to Brookline police officials.

The Brookline Fire Department responded to numerous calls from

neighbors, a spokesman said. The Boston Fire Department also

responded.

The car was extinguished and towed after being "burned beyond

recognition," according to the fire department spokesman. He

said the department did not know what caused the fire.

"It was just a car fire," he said.

Holly Naylor, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences,

was walking to her home on Carleton Street when she saw the fire.

"The car was already totally up in flames," she said. "It was

like something out of a movie."
