Does MSE scan my e-mail so my computer cannot be infected with a virus or malware?

They say that viruses and malware can be sent through an e-mail so when you open the e-mail you automatically get the virus or malware. Does MSE keep this from happening? I know that windows defender scanned e-mail does MSE do this and how can I get it to scan my e-mail?
