DR Congo opposition group vows to defy protest bans

A Democratic Republic of Congo opposition group on Wednesday vowed nationwide protests in defiance of bans in some regions, furious over a court decision to let President Joseph Kabila remain in office beyond his term. "Marches will be organised across the whole of Congolese territory," the Citizens' Front said in a statement ahead of Thursday's demonstrations, calling the freedom to protest "an inalienable right". Demonstrations have been banned by authorities in the restive North Kivu province in the east and in the second city of Lubumbashi in the south.
