OCEAN ISLE BEACH, North Carolina (AP) -- Fire swept through a beach house
that witnesses say was occupied by college students early Sunday, killing
six people and sending several more to a hospital, authorities said.

The house is "standing, but it's totally gutted," according to one witness.

Mayor Debbie Smith said one person is missing. The fire also sent six
people to the hospital, although they were all treated and released a short
time later.
Witnesses said the home had been filled with college students, many of whom
appeared to be from the University of South Carolina.

The fire struck the house on Scotland Street sometime before 7 a.m. and
burned completely through the first and second floors, leaving only part of
the frame standing.

Witnesses said investigators had started removing bodies from the charred
wreckage by early afternoon.

"We ran down the street to get away," said Nick Cain, a student at the
University of North Carolina who was staying at a house about 100 feet away.
Cain said some of his friends had met several people staying at the house,
and he said most appeared to be students from the University of South
Carolina.

"The ash and the smoke were coming down on us. We were just trying to get
away," he said.

The waterfront house was built on stilts, and firefighters had to climb a
ladder to reach the first living floor.

The fire was brought under control late Sunday morning, the mayor said.

Authorities erected a blue tarp to block the view of the fire scene, but
neighbor Bob Alexander said he saw investigators removing bodies early
Sunday afternoon.

"It's terrible to see somebody's children come out of that house this way,"
said Alexander, who lives next to the home on Scotland Street.

He said that while parts of the building's frame were still visible,
"there's nothing usable left. It's completely destroyed."

"It's terrible to see somebody's children come out of that house this way,"
Alexander said.

"I understand there were some college kids in the house. Some got out. Some
did not," Mayor Smith said.

Amy Myers, a spokeswoman for Brunswick Community Hospital, said the hospital
received six patients from the fire. All were treated and released, she
said.

Family members of some victims gathered in a chapel across the street from
the town hall but declined to speak with reporters. Police and fire
officials in Ocean Isle Beach declined to comment, but they were expected to
hold a news conference around 3 p.m.

Representatives of the South Carolina school had been in touch with
officials in Ocean Isle Beach, but they had no solid information on how many
USC students, if any, were involved, university spokesman Russ McKinney
said.

Ocean Isle Beach is at the far southern end of North Carolina's Atlantic
Coast, about 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Only about 500
people live there year-round, but the town is home to several thousand
rental and vacation homes and condos.

The burned house sits on one of a series of peninsulas, all tightly packed
with homes, that are about two blocks from the beach and connect with the
Intracoastal Waterway.
