So there I was looking at this bow I just had to have. It was cheap too.

So I bid and was told that I was "the current high bidder", There was only about an hour to go so I waited. Every few minutes I refreshed the page, and a new time to the auction end would come up, together with "you are the current high bidder" Everthing was looking good.

My last page refresh cofirmed I was still the current high bidder, and that there was one minute to go. I waited on.

Over a few seconds I was no longer the high bidder, AND I couldn't increase my bid because the auction was over................

Now I can see they want you to do the pre-bid thing. However I cannot agree that what they did was in the vendors best interests, neither was it in my best interest. I would have paid more were I given the chance, And the vendor would have gotten more money, were I able to increase my bid.

AND the pre-bidder clearly gets a monopolising position.

That wasn't a pre-bidder. A pre-bidder's bid would have immediately taken precedence over your bid..and you would have then had time to make a new bid.

What you ran into was a "sniper". Someone who is sitting there watching the item as well..waiting for the seconds to tick by, and then, with precision timing, got his last bid in right as the auction was closing.

It's a game, and it is a bit addicting. (guilty blush)

I did it a few times on things I was willing to lose - if you don't bid high enough and if someone else is sniping... you lose!!!

What was your COOOOLEST find on ebay?

I wouldn't know where to begin...

I buy video games, I have found some old stuff, you know old school games that I didn't know existed, promotional toys for my favorite characters and even more current games at fabulous prices...I have a phone of Mario on a kart and the matching alarm clock that I LOVE.

I collect silver plate and sterling silver flatware and have found some wonderful items there.

Ralph Lauren sheets for a song...

I think one of my favs was a book called "Queen Victoria's sketchbook", I don't know how I would have ever found that in a store.

I have my Grandmother's dishes and have found a few pieces here and there to help me complete the set.

I am thinking of starting a collection of embroidered post cards...I love to embroider and these are a very interesting bit of history that are pretty cheap over the internet.

I also use Ebay to look up information on things I already have, like what their worth or what the pattern name of something is. I have inherited ALOT of old things from relatives and alot of it I know very little about.

I am a pathetic piece of shit leeching single mom.

Can you not send a message to someone offering more than your bid in order to maybe secure the sale? I mean, if there's something you really want can you contact the seller to arrange a buyout?

Sorry, no you can't, not with something up for public auction. You can look at the sellers "store" and contact them about those things... but the Seller is bound by strict rules on auctions.

Those who screw with it can be (and often are) kicked off as Sellers. Some get away with it for awhile... using other identities to bid up their own auctions, being in collusion with others... etc.

The rules on the sellers are there to protect you, so that if you validly win an auction, the seller can't back out and give it to someone else.

....

(no, I don't work for Ebay...merely familiar with rules) :)

I don't want to send most members running to the can to puke, but we gotta chat about this somewhere. I'm going to pull out my Victorian Crazy Quilt project tomorrow (might take me 30 years to finish) photo it a bit and post the pics in my gallery... you'll love it - promise!

Grandma's dishes ... can you believe it? Isn't Ebay just WONDERFUL for these things? I had one of those stupid "Franklin Mint Thimble" collections (sucked in when I was 20 years old) ... and one day had a terrible accident whilst vacuuming. Totally destroyed about 1/3 of the set. I went on Ebay last year and replaced them. (for 1/2 the price they cost me 20 years ago). (so much for FRANKLIN MINT!!!! INCREASING IN VALUE!!!! TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW THESE WILL BE WORTH A FORTUNE!!!)

I bought a Wonderful 1949 black rotary phone for my birthday last year...

Give-A-Show - present for hubby

tons of beautiful teacups

A full library of Nevil Shute in hardcover

some GREAT magnets!

tons more...little odds and sods..those are off the top of the noggin.

Your use of it to value things is wondeful. Ain't it grand?:)

BTW...what exactly IS "Queen Victoria's sketchbook"? Sounds lovely.

As an ebay seller I can tell you that thier system is setup to outbid the highest bidder to gross a higher bid. I always thought this was a major flaw in the system ,but it always helped me sell my junk. There are some really good deals on ebay .but half the time it not worth dealing with the bullshit. IMO

I occasionally will use eBay to sell PC's, I mainly cater to the high end market on eBay.

As for buying shit on eBay. I place 1 and only 1 bid. And it will be ONLY the price I am willing to pay for the item. I feel no need to get upset with bid snipes and such. Just because someone is willing to pay a buck or 2 for some shit doesn't mean I need it enough to try and "WIN" it back. My initial bid, is always my final bid.

You got sniped by automated bidding software. The person has the software installed on his computer. They add the item that want and it will bid in the last 20 seconds. All automatic. No way to beat it either.

Do a Google search for "ebay snipe software" and you'll find tons of them. If you buy one of them make sure it a current version and that you get updates. eBay after pressure from people now change their bidding process every couple months to defeat these programs. They change and with in a day the software maker puts an update out.

Thanks for the info SG. It makes perfect sense to me. I wondered what the hell was going on. In the past when I have bid on things, I have sometimes been immediately outbid by a "pre-bidder". Now I know whats happening. Thanks.

OK sixes I am all ears. Come on, tell us all about it. I have read about people making good money on ebay.

However I can't believe that its possible to do this with car-boot trash.

The ones who seem to do well are the ones selling "new" stuff.

So where do you buy large quantities of the product? And, how can you be sure it will sell ? Did you learn how to do it from a book ? Perhaps you did a course somewhere.

Its a book that shows Queen Victoria's sketches from her private sketch book. Reproduction of the original.

I do love to embroider and I often look for old out of print books on the subject but I haven't found any cheap enough yet, the one I was looking at yesterday went for $50 AND had to be mailed from Germany.

I also collect memeorabilia about the Royal Family of England, there is alot of stuff on here like that.

You can even find unfinished needlepoint, where you fill in the background and call it a family heirloom afterward and no one is the wiser, pretty cheap as well.

I have a collection of Plates that I bought from the Franklin Mint that I have been wanting to sell but I won't get that much for them so I still have them. I only paid about $20 each for them years ago.

Oh Gawd... You made me laugh out loud with this one. (actually, it was more of a large Cackle)

I once found these two very cool old B&W pics - one of a lady and one of a fella in uniform. They were mounted (or printed) on round tin saucers, -they kinda look like very large buttons/pins, minus the pin backing.

Anyway..they were cool and I brought them home and put them on my wall. I decided that I might tell people they were my Father's Great Aunt and Uncle.

My boyfriend came home and asked me about them. I almost told him how I'd just picked them up..then decided to try out my story...

He said, "good, cuz it would be really stupid to put up pictures of people you didnt know". I had a private laugh and decided to just keep the story going.

Couple years later,..when we were breaking up.....I suddenly pointed to them on the wall and said, "oh! By the Way! I don't know those people...I got them at a Garage Sale!!"

Too funny.

The Queen's sketch book sounds great. I'd like to see that.

I would love to collect those pictures they made in Victorian times where it was just a profile of the person, I can't remember what you call it, the profile is in black. I love old pictures, anything with a history really. I would rather have old things then anything new.

They ARE nice. Did you know you can learn to do them? It's not all that difficult. I taught school for quite some time - the 3rd grade class did a project on making them.

I don't know that I'm that artistic but I have seen that they do them now at Disney World on Main street and thought it would be fun to get one of Diane and I done and then collect the really old ones as well.

I also like those photographs you can have taken of yourself and family in old fashioned clothes, maybe a little cheesey for some but I love it.

Another thing I look for on Ebay are jewelry display peices, you know the kind they have in jewelry shops. I have a HUGE collection of jewelry and would like to display some of it on my dressor rather then having it all put away in a drawer of the jewelry box. So far I haven't found the right color at the right price.

You basicly learn how to dance around thier software as GF was saying. You are right though ,many people do well on ebay. I'd rather get my things from a store that will refund or replace a junk item without having to fight about it. "As a seller" ,my greatest advantage is that I don't have to make sure the buyer is happy. That was my point. I hope you get it.

I normally watch things in my account until the bitter end, I LOVE it when things end in the middle of the night so I can assume whoever is bidding isn't actually watching the item but I don't wait that late.

I'll never forget when I was watching a bunch of dishes that would complete the set of dishes that I inherited from my grandmother. Franciscan Dinnerware...the price was FABULOUS and I had waited until the last minute to bid and no one else seemed interested in them...there were parts to the set that I didn't need that no one was bidding on at all...I had all the serving pieces (HARD TO FIND AND EXPENSIVE WHEN YOU DO) and some of the dinner plates that I was winning and got scooped at the last minute, I was SO annoyed.

On Ebay I found a dealer who sells the displays you see in jewelry stores, covered in black velvet. I have wanted one to hang necklaces and bracelets on but they have the little trays for earrings as well. NYCdisplay is the name of the seller, the prices are really good but I haven't wanted to settle for black or white...I have seen prettier colors so I have been looking around for that. The Bombay Company has some really nice things to store jewelry in, you might check out their website, no bargains to be had with them unless you wait and buy it on sale.
