European Commission officials travelled to Asia this week for
key summit meetings with the world's fastest growing major
economies.

EC President Barroso did not mince words when addressing
Chinese officials in Beijing: the EU is China's biggest
market, but it exports less to China than it does to
Switzerland's seven million inhabitants. The time has come
to address honestly the sensitive issue of huge imbalances
in trade flows, he said.

The India-EU summit, however, reflected a more equal
partnership. Both sides recognise that an ambitious Free
Trade Agreement can provide a big boost to both economies;
and that cooperation between the world's two largest
democracies can have a great impact in addressing global
challenges such as peace and security, governance and
climate change.

Commenting on our piece "EU boosts anti-bird flu measures in
Britain", David Hill writes:

"Overall investing in antiviral bird flu drugs is a total
waste of money ... The government is just living in hope but
where in reality there is currently no hope. The reason, the
virus mutates constantly and where a new drug has to be
developed to fight the new strain. All that is happening
across the world is that the huge pharmaceutical companies
are making a bird flu drug that is not effective in saving
lives. They know this but with so many billions of profits
to be made, who's bothered?"
