English media coverage of the terrorist attack on Jan 1

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

On January 1, in the early morning hours (2:30 am) a
recruitment office of the Cetnral Reserve Police Force in
Uttar Pradesh was attacked by terrorists. Seven CRPF
personnel and a civilian were killed. I present to you how
the English media in Mumbai covered the event.

January 2, 2008

THE INDIAN EXPRESS

The attack was a lead story on page 1. It had a photo of
the wife of one of the CRPF personnel crying in grief.

THE TIMES OF INDIA

The attack was the second lead on page 1. There was no
photograph of the event. The lead story was about 4 youths
who died in an accident in a speeding car that they were
in. There is a photography of the smashed car.

HINDUSTAN TIMES

The attack was the third lead, with a small photograph.
The lead story was about two women who were molested
outside a five-star hotel, with large photographs of the
scenes. The second lead was about the car crash.

THE ASIAN AGE

The attack was a sort of lead story. There is a large
photo of the son of Benazir Bhutto and his two sisters,
taken on arrival in Dubai airport. An item about a high
court judge about a controversy surrounding the
Commonwealth Games Village had a bigger headline than the
story of the terrorist attack. It would be interesting to
note that while the other three publication termed the
attack as by terrorists, the Asian Age decided to term them
as militants.

On January 3, the attack remained on the front page of The
Indian Express, mentioning that the CRPF dead had fought
against insurgency in the North Easht and Kashmir valley
for years. It also gave a small profile of each of the
seven killed. And a photo of the seven coffins draped with
the flag of India. For the other four publications, the
item did not merit important enough to be mentioned on the
first page.

This is the way the English media is concerned about those
who are defending the country from the terrorists. It is
no wonder that they are becoming irrelevant to the needs of
the society, and also clearly shows how dumbed down they
have become. And when Narendra Modi takes up the issue of
security of the people, he is panned as wanting to divide
the society.

On the other hand, please see the enclosed item. A Shiv
Sena leader was killed because he tried to prevent eve
teasing. In Hindustan Times it is mentioned that the
leader was killed because he asked the culprits not to
disrupt the audience by their whistling and comments. The
other three publications did not find the murder serious
enough to warrant even a small report.
