Error code 800b0109 and Window Defender disabled

I cannot run windows update without error code Error code 800b0109 popping up. Windows Defender is deactivated and attempts to start it bring up error code 0x800705b4.

I didn't run any other antivirus except Microsoft Security Essentials, which I was uninstalling and attempting to reinstall amidst the folly of trying to run both MSE and Windows Defender at the same time, thinking they were separate products. Here are the last 50 lines from my windowsupdate log.
