Hello there,

I get an [Error number: 0x8024402F] every time I try to do Windows
Update on a fresh installation of Windows XP Professional SP3.

I have already tried all of the suggestions to solve this problem I
have found in Internet, like:

1. done all the normal and advanced methods proposed on this page

2. cleared Temporary Internet files;

3. checked that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service to is set
to Automatic and verified its Status is Started;

4.
- net stop wuauserv
- net stop bits
- run disk clean up and choose all except compress old files.
- delete “%windir%\softwaredistribution†directory.
- net start wuauserv
- net start bits
- wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow

5. checked that the Set Event Log service is set to Automatic and
verify that the Status is Started

8. run:
regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 MSXML2.DLL
regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL

9.
- %SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
- %SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
- %SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
- downloaded the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here
(x86):

- closed all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.
- %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE

10. downloaded and installed the latest Windows Installer (for my OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )

- selected CUSTOM scan
- got the same [Error number: 0x8024402F]

12. followed these instructions:

- looked in the %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads
- found two updates (KB973874-IE8.CAT and KB972260-IE8.CAT)
- went to their "update" folder within each folder and double clicked
the update.exe.

14. run Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24

I still get the same error, I don't know what else to do.

You attempted to opt the system into Microsoft Update when the system
could barely access Windows Update.

When was IE8 installed ?

The subfolders of Software Distribution\Download are randomly named and
in turn, they contain an update subfolder which contains the .cat file.
IF the subfolders are named .cat then the downloads are not complete,
thus, they will not install.
There's a file list for IE8 x86 for XP here:

All of the files listed will be present in a randomly named subfolder of
SD if it downloaded correctly.

Which firewall is being used; is the system on a network, if yes, is
this a wireless network or hardwired ?

Have you tried to manually download an update from the MS Download
Center, save, and then install it ?

YW, krige. There's no issue with Windows Installer if the system can
update manually. The issue is being caused by some 'thing' interfering
with the communication between the update servers and the system.
BTW, "Direct access" means that there is no proxy being used between the
servers and the system.

Does the router have a hardware firewall and does it have ActiveX or
script blocking turned on by it's Default setting ?

What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?

Ensure that necessary updating services are not Disabled.
Open the Services console and check:

Automatic Updates Startup type: Automatic
Background Intelligence Transfer Service (BITS) - Manual

See if either of the above 2 services is Disabled, can be started,
stopped, and then restarted again, whatever the case may be.


If the isssue is not outside the OS, then suggest you see:

And, have you checked IE's add ons to see if one of them is causing the
communications error ?
Tools > Manage Add-ons
In the left frame click on Toolbars and Extensions and then check out
the listings on the right. Click the drop down window next to Show and
choose All add-ons first.
Now set Show to " Run without permission" and then go over the list in
the right frame again.

Once you're done with Toolbars and Extensions, click InPrivate Filtering
and see if any microsoft update sites are being blocked.

They are both started and running. They can be stopped, started and
restarted.

I have downloaded and have run the fix mentioned in that page with no
success: I still get the same error.

They are all enabled. Should I look for any other evidence?

The InPrivate Filtering frame is empty.

I don't know whether it's relevant but I have just found out that the
reverse lookup for update.microsoft.com doesn't work. When I run:

nslookup update.microsoft.com

it gives me back:

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: update.microsoft.com.nsatc.net
Address: 65.55.184.156
Aliases: update.microsoft.com

whereas when I run:

nslookup 65.55.184.156

it gives:

can't find 65.55.184.156: Non-existent domain

The reverse lookup works fine with all the other domains I have

If you're looking for a connectivity test use telnet and open a connection
with that canonical name you found at its port 80. Then when the cursor
appears at the top of the screen enter GET /
(That is the simplest simulation of an HTTP request by an HTTP client.)

AFAIK, the router may be blocking outbound traffic of the system, thus
resulting in the communications error with the update servers.

The servers DNS addresses are fluid. If they weren't, they'd be DDoSed
into oblivion. So, the non-existent domain message is 'expected behavior'.

Run IE with no add-ons and see what happens ...
Start > Programs > Accessorites > System Tools
Under System Tools there should be a shortcut named

I am not sure what I should press with the CTRL key. In order to get

My network administrator told me it only checks inbound traffic,
outbound is not checked. My colleagues computers don't have any error
when updating. I tried to install the operating system from scratch but
it didn't solve the problem.

You first need to connect to a web server, using a command like:

open update.microsoft.com.nsatc.net 80

That's good. Usually you get more time but those 30 seconds
are when you can try entering GET /

E.g. did you notice a cursor at the top left? That's where the GET /
would be typed.

Did you try the GET / with telnet?

Note that a sequence would be:

In a cmd window (or even in the Run... dialog) enter:

telnet update.microsoft.com 80

Then overtype the Welcome to telnet... top line with

GET /

And press Enter. You may have to press Enter twice.


However, if it is just a problem with your DNS try this sequence
of commands instead (in a cmd window, this won't work from Run...)

1. ipconfig /flushdns
2. ping -n 1 update.microsoft.com
3. press Ctrl-c
4. Extract the canonical name from the pinging message
5. ping -n 1 the name from 4.
6. repeat 3 thru 5 until the extracted name is the name you pinged last.
7. then try to use the WU shortcut.

BTW in order to check on what that accomplished you can use
1. ipconfig /displaydns >displaydns.txt
2. notepad displaydns.txt
and press F3 to find that last name.

So for example you might see something like this when you're done:

You need to find A (Host) Record or you won't have an IP address
for your lookup so then nothing useful would have been cached.
Note that the Time to Live (TTL) value is seconds, so that would give
you about 3 minutes to use this lookup without having to go back
to your DNS. (In fact, once an instance of IE gets connected
it may manage its own cache of IP addresses which make
the TTL in the dnscache entries less important.)
