First Impressions

I was curious as to whether or not the people here trust their first impressions of bands. I know sometimes when I hear a band and dislike them at first I may end up liking them or feeling different about them down the road. I remember when I use to hate My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, and Marilyn Manson now I can say they’ve grown on me quite a bit. I was even listening to a Slipknot song that I ended up liking a while ago and I hate them. I don’t know if my overall opinion of them will change though. It takes more then me liking one song to really sway my initial impression. For example I really like Coming Undone by KoRn but I think everything else by them is ****. So my initial impression of them being terrible stays intact. That’s usually how I end up being with a lot of bands unfortunately. I just like one or two songs by them and hate everything else. So my opinions can really switch around a lot. I guess it depends on the band sometimes and how much I like them. I can't really say.

I do it with songs, like I hated the new MCR song, then after a few listens it really started to grow on me. Same with the new Good Charlotte one.

Klaxons grew on me too, at first I thought they were well ****.

lol I didn't like Papercut the first time I heard it (for some strange reason). Then after forcibly (I know I didn't spell that right >.<) for like 10 times, it grew on me and now it's one of (if not) my favorites atm.

I should also mention there are times when I really like a band and then I get bored with them. Like how I use to Disturbed for example now I don't really care for them anymore. It was like obsessed with them for a while then it all just went away suddenly.

hahaha... an impression? Well, I think everybody has a first impression when they meet something/someone for the first time. Sometimes, our impression is right, sometimes is wrong. Well, about LP, I didnt have any impression 'cos I'm always been interested in them... but, from the other hand, and always talking about impression, I can say that my huge impression about a band was when I saw this vid. they're a spanish band called Shalom. They got some success in the 80'... When four months ago I saw it, I was shocked... do you know why? well, put attention in the guitarist and the bass... what do you think of them? I think they're totally crazy!! and what about you??

I didnt like em at all on first listen now I love em, I would hardly call any of the bands listed by other people above 'Growers'

I was about to make that same statement. What's so hard to understand about these groups? They don't make anything challenging. There aren't any depths to uncover.

Too bad you didn't try mine as well. But then again, the stuff I put up is not always bright and cheery and immediately easy to get into.

Btw........you're missing some crucial letters in your sentences that could make things easier to read.

I disliked Linkin Park altogether back then. I think Papercut was my literal first LP song, but i detested it... It all depends how your taste changes and how things gradually get to you. Some songs are difficult to get into if you aren't into the genre, but gradually if you do get into the genre or the type of music, it might come back to you and hit you as a great song.

I was into mainstream croatian music..I listened to almost everything you would give me cuz I wasn't payin attention to the genre, popularity..

How I got into LP? Well..I watched One step closer video before Hybrid theory come out, and I didn't know that it was them -> my impression was, wow..cool! I must find out who was that band. I heard on commercial about LP and HT release..My thought was..wannabe suckers! But then I watched In the end..and I was...wooooow (again). this guys rule! I manage to get the original from a friend..But OSC mystery remained for a year..Then I suddenly watched TV, and I saw OSC video...I was like WTF?? That's LP?? Wooow!! (third time) (Well, you need to forgive me..I couldn't find Frat Party DVD for nearly two years at that time). And that's it..

Then I realized that that whole genre was called, crossover, nu metal, alt metal, rap core, rap metal, etc..And I was searchin to bands similar to them, so I got into

Alien Ant farm (Smooth criminal cover)

Papa Roach (Infest grew on me..It was like one of my fav albums that time)

RATM (Guerilla Radio...The whole Battle of los angeles album)

Crazy Town (famous Butterfly song..but I got tired of that one..Album had more better songs..too bad that they are gone)

Limp Bizkit (I saw My way, and that was it...I luv that video, and Wes masks and style)

Disturbed (I heard shout 2000, and I wonder who was that..I typed lyrics and found out that song belongs to them (cover song) and I got sickness...at first it wasn't something special to me..but after awhile I was really into Believe album..and I still listen to them..one of fav numetal groups)

KoRn (I heard em alot of times..but I wasn't payin attention..I thought they suck. But Somehow I got this album Follow the leader, and after several times of repeatin songs, I was like...this is ****** great, and I caught this first one, selftitled album, and it blew me away, so much cussing, screaming, detuned guitars, wicked and morbid songs..I still isten to them even if IMO, SYOTOS suck ***!)

Deftones ( LP played this cover song "My own summer" back in year 2002, I downloaded Deftones one, And I loved it, psychodelic Chino voice, screaming, heavy riffs, and great video..Still, most of the other songs were not good to me at first time, it took awhile to get used to them, but now I love them)

At that point I wasn't into any heavier than this..but then I listened to Metallica, and I was..wow..long fast songs, wicked old school solos and stuff (at least first 4 albums), other albums I didn't listen that much cuz they suck..Kill em all and Master of puppets are must for those who are calling themselves metal kids.

Then I went deeper into thrash scene, and now I listen to slayer, anthrax, old sepultura (with Max Cavalera), tankard, sadus, exodus, sodom... Post thrash Pantera, Machine head..

And i opened my ears to scandinavian metal scene and bands such as Dark Tranquillity, In flames, Ceremonial oath, Wintersun, Ensiferum, Opeth, etc..

Now when I look back most of the stuff I find slow, weak, stupid.. I guess that's it when you move to heavier and heavier stuff.

I remember I thought I would never listen to death metal, cuz it's stupid when someone growls, and music is stupid, with no sense, melody...But hey..never say never again.

And I remember thinkin Slipkont, Mudavayne, Static X, Trivium were so heavy, but soon I realised they suck ***. I can't stand that kind of wannabe harsh metal. Only metalcore band that is worth listening is Unearth. they rule. Killswitch ruled to me..but only with previous singer. Now they gone soft and they suck.

So..that would be about it..I can't write anymore..my fingers hurts

First impressions really count with me for some odd reason, if i hear a new song ill listen to it fairly and too the end but if it doesnt grab me or move me the first time i hear it, then i just dont bother. *shrugs* lol :)

I think I'm going through the same. except I still listen to RATM, Deftones, and LP a bit, and I haven't gone as far into the metal yet

No, I usually don't trust my first impression.

Though I don't always realize it. I might here something and not like it, then subconsciously keep myself away from it. If I think about it though, I say to myself "that was only one song... not an accurate representation... I should give it another try." Usually I'm too lazy to actually do that though.

I remember a long time ago, listening to "Crawling" and hating it.

Obviously tastes change.

A lot of it has to do with having a closed mind. I'll listen to anything now, and take everything into consideration.

However, it's a pretty safe bet for me that I will never like Gangsta rap or country. xD
