PART ONE

I

“Congratulations, Mr Shinoda. Your wife gave birth to a baby girl”. The midwife announced a smile on her face as Mike walked in with his band members. She held a bundle in her arms.

“Wooh” Joesph yelled and he thumped the grinning father on his back. The others also gave their congrats.

“Best feeling in the world, isn’it?” Chester smiled, Mike nodded; his face was a bit red from the pride he was feeling. His mum was in there with his wife. He had just flown back from Australia where his band had been touring. He had actually received the call straight after the concert. He wasn’t even feeling the normal jet-lag. The nurse passed over the sleeping baby to the new Dad. He ran his thumb and fore finger over her head before kissing her forehead.

“Oooh, natural aren’t we?” Brad winked. Mike blushed, handed the baby back to the nurse, and then started to head towards Anna’s room.

“Wait a minute” the midwife, whose name tag read “Lucy” stepped in front of Mike.

“What?” Mike asked, feeling a stab of impatience for being delayed. He then noticed that the nurse’s smile was strained.

“Dr. Drake would like to see you”.

Mike’s stomach felt as it had suddenly twisted into a knot. His friends looked away awkwardly. He followed the nurse to the Doctor’s office, his whole body feeling numb. He was not registering anything around him; his whole mind was clouded with fear.

‘Oh, *** if something’s wrong with the baby…please ***, please’ he silently begged to himself. She seemed healthy. Dr Drake was waiting for him. He looked grim and his tanned face looked very tired. He looked a lot older than his 55 years. Before he could even speak, Mike asked “Doctor, what’s wrong with my daughter?”

The doctor looked alarmed. “Oh no, nothing’s wrong with her, She was born completely physically healthy, no problems at all during the birth with her.”

Mike let out an air of relief.

“But, um…as you know I have been Anna’s family doctor for nearly 26 years and a family friend…I delivered Anna, you know and I personally came over for the delivery of her own child.”

“That’s very kind of you” Mike replied, feeling confused and a bit anxious. He wanted to see Anna and he wanted to see his daughter.

“Yes, well…you, see Mr Shinoda…this is very difficult for me to tell you this but…I told her she was going to have difficulties if she became pregnant, but she knew that you wanted children and she still insisted on keeping the baby despite the risk she was taking.” The doctor paused and looked at Mike. He looked as if he was struggling to keep his emotions under control.

“Well?” asked Mike, he tried to sound calm but he kept thinking ‘Please don’t tell me she won’t be able to have kids anymore’.

“She’s internally bleeding, we’ve been trying for the last two days but it’s too…it’s beyond our control. She said she was prepared for something like this if it was to happen, she said she’s accepted it.” He looked at Mike sadly “She’s going to die”.

“You’re a bad person” Mike said with a tremor in his voice. “You’re terrible for doing this to yourself, to me, to us.” He stared at the wall the entire time as he spoke. He hadn’t made eye contact with her once.

Her slim hand reached over and grabbed his. “Mike” Anna said softly. He stubbornly stared ahead. “Please look at me. Don’t be angry, I couldn’t bear it. Won’t you be my friend?” she insisted in that same voice, as if she were placating a child. He turned around; his eyes were brimming with tears.

She smiled at him in her gentle, tender way. “Can you promise me something Mike? Promise me you won’t cry”.

“Mmhh mmhh” He shook his head. Then he finally said, after what seemed like an eternal silence “Why did you do this Anna? We could have adopted, why did you do this?”

She laughed sadly in reply. “Mike you talk as if I did this on purpose. I took the risk; I lost in a sense but not really. We have a beautiful daughter and I would gladly give up my life for her.” She took a deep breath. “I gave your Mum eight letters this morning which I wrote during the pregnancy. Our daughter will have one every year on her birthday. Her first eight years. So she’ll know me after all.” Her eyes welled over with tears. “Will you promise me one thing? Please name our girl Aali?. That’s my final wish from you. Promise me” Her voice started to crack. “I’m sorry Mike, I’m so sorry…” She began to sob, tears streaming down her face. Mike finally let his own tears flow. Weeping bitterly, he cried “Don’t go”. He buried his face in her shoulders. Somehow, they lay down on the small hospital bed. She placed her arm around his shoulders. She closed her eyes for the last time.

EIGHT YEARS LATER

She sighed impatiently, glancing at her watch. He always did this, always. She suddenly saw him running over to her in the distance but she pretended to be busy reading her book. He came and sat down next to her. She ignored him. He dropped the teddy bear on her lap. She smiled at the bear, looked up. “Humph” she replied and she started off outside.

“Aali” Mike called running after her. She stopped.

“Aw, come on Aali I was only…” He glanced at his watch “Ok, I was one hour and forty three minutes late but it wasn’t my fault. I got held up”

“That’s what you always say” She snapped.

Mike smiled, scratching his head. “I’m sorry.”

“Ok, last time though” Mike smiled.

He hugged her. “Come on, let’s drive to the mall.” He held her hand and they left the airport.

Mike felt so proud of her Dad, she knew people stared at him because he was handsome and he looked important and he was once a famous singer.

“Hear that” Mike said suddenly, as they walked through the shopping centre, “they’re playing one of my songs over the intercom. My band's very first release”.

“I know” Aali grinned. She had heard all the albums, seen the DVD’s and the posters/articles her grandma had kept, laughed with her father at the fan-mail he had and still sometimes received.

“Why did you stop singing Daddy?” Aali asked. She was surprised that she had never thought of asking him this.

“Well, I had you. You were always my first priority.” Mike affectionately rubbed her head.

“If Mommy was alive would you have stopped?” She pressed. There was a pause.

“I don’t know. Probably not” He shrugged lightly.

“I was with Grandma. You could have still sung if you wanted”. Aali said.

“I didn’t want though” He looked uncomfortable “How is Grandma by the way?”

Aali knew he was changing the subject and she didn’t pursue the topic.

They arrived at the café and Aali drank her shake in silence. Mike sipped his coffee and was deep in thought. Remembering when he had announced that he was leaving.

“WHAT? I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE DOING THIS” Chester exploded.

“I don’t have a choice really. I have to look after my daughter” Mike said.

“You don’t have a ch…Oh, bullshit. Cut the ****. You know your Parents can look after her. I’m sorry Anna died but you can’t…”

Joe interrupted him. “Chester, leave it alone. We understand Mike. We don’t wanna lose you but we do understand and we will support you”.

“Bullshit! Mike, you’re not the only who’s a father” Chester snapped “You don’t see any of us quitting.”

“You didn’t lose your partner, did you?” Mike replied angrily in return.

Chester was about to say something then suddenly looked defeated. “Fine, you wanna go. Go. We have a six album record deal. We’ll just complete it without you. I’ve had enough of this. Go over to the ******* papers and tell them yourself. Go” He pointed to the door.

“Jesus, Chaz, be a little bit reasonable” Rob exclaimed. Chester shook his head and turned away. He knocked over a chair and sent it flying before slamming the door.

He missed performing. Missed the crowd, the fans, the singing, and the fun. Being with five of his best friends. Most of all the adrenalin rush and loving what he did. It was a part of him.

He didn’t want it anymore. But he still missed it.

“Dad” Aali’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Hmmm?”

“I’m sorry if I upset you” she timidly touched his hand.

He smiled at her. “I’m not upset at you. I was just thinking” He looked at his now empty cup and out of nowhere said to Aali “You know, life is so unusual. Never take anything for granted. We must never expect too much”

“61, 62, 63, 64” Mike muttered to himself, as he concentrated intently on what he was doing.

“Hey you” Mike’s Mom came over holding two cups of Coffee.

“Hey, is Aali in bed?” Duncan asked, not looking up.

“Yes, she is. Put down that basketball.”

“In a minute” Mike replied. He dunked it in the hoop with ease.

“You know, you’re uncle called. He’s setting up a date.”

“For who?”

“Oh, *** Mike. For who? For me, that’s who”

“You should go for it Mom”

“Shut up. You know who I’m talking about. He met this nice girl at work. She’s gorgeous apparently. I said you weren’t interested” She glanced at him.

“That’s good”

“You aren’t interested?” She asked.

“Nope”

“Ok, fine, good, that’s alright, I don’t care, and I don’t know why your uncle keeps bothering me with all this…”

Mike walked over to his Mom and sat down next to her. “Mom, I’m thirty three. If I’m interested I’ll let you know myself. Why are you so eager for me to get a girlfriend? Not just a girlfriend but to get married?”

She leaned heavily on his shoulder “This family feels so… incomplete. You haven’t been with anyone since Anna died. You know all my friends complain about their daughter in laws or the girlfriends their sons have. I can’t even do that” She pouted.

Mike began to laugh and soon his whole body was in stiches with laughter. He finally managed to gasp “Oh, you want me to get hitched so you can complain about her? I’d better find a girl right away.”

“Stop it Mike. You know that’s not the reason”

“What is the reason Mom? Why do you want me to get married again?” He was serious now.

“I only want you to be happy. That’s all. I know you’re coping but you’re not happy. And don’t you think it would be good for Aali to have a Mum figure in her life?”

“I am happy. Aali’s fine too, Mom. Really” His mouth set in a hard line

“You know she’s not Mike. I can’t be a substitute and neither can you”

“I don’t wanna talk about this anymore. I’m going to bed”

He stood up and left the room, his mouth pressed in one line.

The alarm went off at 12:00 am and Aali sat up, bright eyed. She crept down the stairs. Sure enough there was a pile of presents. She sifted through them and found the one she was after. She tore the envelope and began reading.

“My sweet daughter. Happy 8th Birthday. How are you my darling? I know your doing well; you have the best Dad and the best grandma in the world. …

I’m sure you look just like your Dad. Same eyes, same face. Am I right?”

“No, I look just like you” pouted Aali, she continued reading.

“You’re a big girl now Aali. I’m going to tell you a story. It’s very important and something you should know. It’s a story about me, your Dad and a friend named Aali.”

1995

“Breathe in, breathe out” Aali commanded herself as she did her sit-ups. It was part of her morning exercise routine. She glanced up at the giant clock on the gymnasium wall. He was late. As usual. The doors flew open. Aali looked up.

Mike was standing there with his sports bag.

“Late again” Aali said. Mike swaggered in.

“I hate waking up early in the mornings” He shrugged.

“You hate waking up or were you afraid?” She smirked.

“I don’t fear anyone” He smirked.

“I Mike Shinoda fear no one” Aali mimicked.

“Come on, let’s play. I’ll just kick your *** and get this game over with so I can go”

“You ALWAYS say that but you ALWAYS lose”

“Hey, I won’t lose today”

“You always say that too”

“We will see”

Aali ran her hand through her short hair. “We will see”.

The game was in favor of Aali, as usual

“Come on, Mr. Popular! Mikey Wikey”

“You’re…” Mike made a motion of slicing her throat.

Mike had the ball and he ran towards the net. Aali caught up to him quickly.

‘**** it’ he thought, gritting his teeth. He shoved her out of the way and dunked the ball in

“YES” Mike jumped up and down.

“Hey” Aali yelled, as she stood up “If you can’t play then at least don’t cheat”

“Aali, don’t call me a cheater” Mike said.

Aali started chanting “Mike is a cheater. Cheater. Cheater. He is a cheater. He is a cheater”

“Am not” Mike yelled, right up in her face.

“CHEATER” Aali yelled back.

Mike grabbed her arm, spun her around and twisted it behind her back.

“Oooowwwwwwwww” she screamed, right in his ear.

“Ouch!! Stop screeching like a girl” He complained. He let go of her arm.

“Don’t call me that!” Aali sulked.

“Oh, ha-ha. I forgot. You’re obviously not a girl.” He laughed and started twirling the basketball with on his finger

“At least I’m not a member of your stupid fan-club” She snapped. She started imitating them in a high pitched voice “Oh, Mike! You’re so cute!” She pinched his cheek hard.

“Not as handsome as you. Your facial hair is better then mine” Mike said.

Aali’s hand flew up to her face in before she could stop herself. Mike started to laugh. He fell on the floor. She started at him haughtily.

“I don’t like jokes” she said.

“I don’t like youuuuuu” he laughed again. “Besides, who said I was joking?”

“Jealous, huh?” she leered. She had perspiration all over her yellow adidas sweatsuit. Mike laughed even harder.

Aali started to walk away. Her hair, a mix of burgundy red and chestnut brown was cut in a short boyish style, which was normally covered with a baseball cap. She never wore any jewellery or make up and she dressed like a typical tom-boy. She was quiet attractive though. Wide blue grey eyes framed with long, curly, dark-brown eyelashes. A pleasant mouth and a slender nose. White skin that was as smooth as a porcelain doll. But guys were never interested in her. She was too loud. Too rough around the edges. Mike was the cute one. The one girls adored for some reason that was unfathomable to Aali.

Aali and Mike were best friends.

“Aali” Mike caught up with her. He grabbed her shoulder. “Forgive me?” He smiled impishly. They fought at least once a day and made up at least once a day. He held out both his hands.

She rolled her eyes, shook her head and gave him a high five. He returned it. They hugged.
