PART ONE

“Congratulations, Mr Shinoda. Your wife gave birth to a baby girl”. The midwife announced a smile on her face as Mike walked in with his band members. She held a bundle in her arms.
“Wooh” Joesph yelled and he thumped the grinning father on his back. The others also gave their congrats.
“Best feeling in the world, isn’it?” Chester smiled, Mike nodded; his face was a bit red from the pride he was feeling. His mum was in there with his wife. He had just flown back from Australia where his band had been touring. He had actually received the call straight after the concert. He wasn’t even feeling the normal jet-lag. The nurse passed over the sleeping baby to the new Dad. He ran his thumb and fore finger over her head before kissing her forehead.
“Oooh, natural aren’t we?” Brad winked. Mike blushed, handed the baby back to the nurse, and then started to head towards Anna’s room.
“Wait a minute” the midwife, whose name tag read “Lucy” stepped in front of Mike.
“What?” Mike asked, feeling a stab of impatience for being delayed. He then noticed that the nurse’s smile was strained.
“Dr. Drake would like to see you”.
Mike’s stomach felt as it had suddenly twisted into a knot. His friends looked away awkwardly. He followed the nurse to the Doctor’s office, his whole body feeling numb. He was not registering anything around him; his whole mind was clouded with fear.
‘Oh, *** if something’s wrong with the baby…please ***, please’ he silently begged to himself. She seemed healthy. Dr Drake was waiting for him. He looked grim and his tanned face looked very tired. He looked a lot older than his 55 years. Before he could even speak, Mike asked “Doctor, what’s wrong with my daughter?”
The doctor looked alarmed. “Oh no, nothing’s wrong with her, She was born completely physically healthy, no problems at all during the birth with her.”
Mike let out an air of relief.
“But, um…as you know I have been Anna’s family doctor for nearly 26 years and a family friend…I delivered Anna, you know and I personally came over for the delivery of her own child.”
“That’s very kind of you” Mike replied, feeling confused and a bit anxious. He wanted to see Anna and he wanted to see his daughter.
“Yes, well…you, see Mr Shinoda…this is very difficult for me to tell you this but…I told her she was going to have difficulties if she became pregnant, but she knew that you wanted children and she still insisted on keeping the baby despite the risk she was taking.” The doctor paused and looked at Mike. He looked as if he was struggling to keep his emotions under control.
“Well?” asked Mike, he tried to sound calm but he kept thinking ‘Please don’t tell me she won’t be able to have kids anymore’.
“She’s internally bleeding, we’ve been trying for the last two days but it’s too…it’s beyond our control. She said she was prepared for something like this if it was to happen, she said she’s accepted it.” He looked at Mike sadly “She’s going to die”.
