FRANKENSTEIN

Who cares what a twisted monster thinks?

His curses in ears of pharisees

A creature so sick as to dare suggest

That the greatest Truths are heresies

To be tortured from birth, because he is ugly,

in the wisdom of life, so monsters are fated

By a Creator that torments his children

and blames them for being created

We are punished, so we are told,

for the Master Plan from which we depart

What Power so great can bring us from the Void

yet instill nothing pure in our hearts?

The mind cannot process that our World is random

The eye shuts in harsh light, from answers that we sought

Rape is not a recipe for your betterment

Disease and genocide are not a lesson taught

Why would the prelude to Eternal Paradise

be a century of pain in a world of lies?

How can you expect to know the deepest secrets

when you cannot see what is in front of your eyes?

What father punishes child on a red-hot stove

and blames child for misusing a will that is free?

Abuse of our free choice owes to our character

but then our character had birth unasked from Thee

Arbeitsmarktdaten bringen Zinssenkung

Frankensteins Aufbluhen und der Einzug der Reformation.

1606 hatte die Pest wieder viele Opfer in Frankenstein und

Umgebung gefordert.

Dann konnte man ins

eingestellt

Auch das wurde in Frankenstein mit Sorge gesehen, sollte es im

Osten keinen Frieden geben?

More than any other worker the Teuton is cooperative. As early

as the mid-13th century the towns of Hamburg and Lubeck

inaugurated enlightened co-operation which led to the famed

Hanseatic League; and late in the 19th century, Germany gave to

the world that ultimately co-operative enterprise, the

proletarian loan bank. The gigantic post-War industrial

Frankenstein erected by Herr Stinnes is conceivable among no

other people. Only because the German settles down in any

workable industrial harness and tugs mightfully is the Dawes

Plan practicable.

Two German Nuclear Power Plants Close After Incidents

Two nuclear power plants near Hamburg were shut down Thursday

after a fire broke out in one and a short-circuit in a switching

unit occurred in another.

The blaze occurred when the cooling fluid of a huge transformer

unit caught fire. Police did not say what the burning fluid was,

but surplus heat from electrical transformers is usually

conducted away with oil.

The transformer complex alters the power voltage so it can be

fed into the national power grid.

Even more important, most people made no relation between the

power plants and the electricity supplied to their house.

Jokingly, the German nuclear association promoted the slogan in

those days: "Why nuclear power plants? In my house, electricity

comes from the plug." Probably few people understood what the

joke was.

This image is abundantly developed in fiction and films. From Dr

Strangelove films to Simpson comics, we have a large team of mad

Germany: Investigation Shows reactor mishap most serious in ten years

When inspectors walked through Germany's Unterweser nuclear

plant on June 6 after it had shut down, they were shocked to

find that workers had disconnected and disabled an entire key

safety system, according to internal documents obtained by

Nucleonics Week

But an investigation of the event by Nucleonics Week has now

turned up confidential event reports which showed that the

incident was the most serious safety-related event at a German

reactor since 1987, when another German reactor, Biblis-A,

suffered a loss-of-coolant accident precursor, posing the threat

of a sequence leading to core meltdown. That event was hidden

from the German public for a whole year

The service water piping system at nuclear power plants provides

cooling for a variety of safety and non-safety related

components and systems. Reliability of service water piping

systems is a key consideration for safe and reliable plant

operations. Conventional inspection techniques for detection of

pipe wall thinning usually involve the time- intensive process

of ultrasonic thickness measurements, based on a grid system, of

the entire pipe length. An alternative to this process may lie

in the use of active infrared thermography techniques for

detection of thin wall areas in the pipe. Infrared thermography

(IR), in a passive mode, has been widely used by utilities for a

variety of predictive maintenance applications. For assessment

of service water piping, an active IR technique, thermal

injection, can be used. Application of this IRNDE technique for

material evaluation can provide a rapid screening technique for

identification of thin wall areas in service water piping. The

EPRI NDE Center participated in a preliminary evaluation of this

technology at Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.

Based on the promising results of the Vermont Yankee activity,

the Center worked with Thermal Wave Imaging, Inc. in an effort

to optimize the IR thermal injection technique for service water

piping applications.

Now Frankenstein's creation can talk and express his feelings

and emotions through words. Although his utterances are only

simple sentences like "Friend - good!" and not the eloquent

speeches in perfect English from the novel, this is an important

factor in removing the Monster from the sub-human image of the

first film. Furthermore, the Monster can now be soothed by sweet

music, he laughs, drinks wine, puffs cigars with the hermit and

even weeps because at last he has found a friend. There are also

hints at a gay undertone inherent in these scenes, a guess which

is not far-fetched considering James Whale's homosexuality.

Improving efficiency in the production of large diameter

ductile iron pipes

The large diameter pipe (450mm ? 800mm) heat treatment stove

control system to process ductile iron pipes relied upon the use

of hand-held temperature monitoring devices to control

processing temperatures. Holly's project was to automate the

control system, thus reducing costs. Five Infrared sensors were

already installed in the stove; Holly decided to move one of the

five Infrareds to make assessment more effective, running trials

to establish temperature parameters for each diameter of pipe,

then consolidating these findings into one set of parameters.

She monitored physical dimensions and the metallurgical

structure of the pipes to ensure quality was maintained. Holly

also altered the processing temperatures compared to previously

used temperature standards to estimate gas consumption savings.

As the stoves are integral to the production process, trials had

to be run during normal production schedules, and so real test

conditions were not available.

"Holly's achievements in this project are impressive. Her

ability to motivate plant workers faced with the imminent plant

closure and to impress Saint Gobain Directors

demonstrates she has the appropriate personality to accompany

her technical ability. She has been offered sponsorship for her

university studies with the intention of assuming a position

within Saint Gobain afterwards."

workers took unauthorized strike action (wildcat) when it became

clear that management was more concerned with production than

with worker safety, since the electrical arc could have ignited

a fire that might have destroyed the plant. Workers don't trust

that management will set the safety system to actually protect

them.

Workers had complained for some time that the infrared

THE INFRARED SCARE

Infrareds have infiltrated the infrastructure

------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5146362.html

Infra-red extraction from illumination source

Document Type and Number: United States Patent 5146362

BACKGROUND, FEATURES

Workers recognize that "electronic images" should be processed

much quicker, more reliably and less subject to error. But to do

so, one must first capture an accurate image, or modified image,

of the physical document and convert this into electronic

computer (EDP) signals

Workers are beginning to think of using imaging technology as a

way of improving document processing, as disclosed, for example,

in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,510,619; 4,205,780; 4,264,808; and 4,672,186.

Generally, imaging involves optically scanning documents to

produce electronic images that are processed electronically and

stored on high capacity storage media (such as magnetic disc

drives and/or optical memory) for later retrieval and display.

It is apparent that document imaging can provide an opportunity

to reduce document handling and movement, since the electronic

images can be used in place of the actual documents.

These and other features and advantages of the present invention

will be appreciated by workers as they become better understood

by reference to the following detailed description of the

present preferred embodiments which should be considered in

conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein like

reference symbols denote like elements

Workers will understand that documents (e.g. checks, etc.) are

to be fed into Processor 1-11 and rapidly transported thereby

past various processing-stations

Thus, as illustrated very schematically in FIG. 14 (front view

of a "circular" fibre-bundle input-face or entry-aperture, 21-1F,

with 21-OP representing the outer periphery of this input-face),

workers will appreciate that simply shifting such a lens 2-9, 2-

9' to change its focus, one can quite simply change the beam-

diameter on an entry-aperture 21-F (changing intensity at output

face 21-E

Light reflected from the front "slice" of the passing document

is directed to an "optical tower" (Front tower, OT, Rear Tower

OT', see FIGS. 32, 33 19) housing an assembly of mirrors. The

light entering each optical tower is reflected down by an

Imaging mirror 3-1, to a Trunnion mirror 3-3 below the transport

level

As workers know, maximum illumination intensity is typically

along the "normal" to a document (i.e. the perpendicular to its

plane)--but, unfortunately, this is also where glare is a maximum

Workers will recognize that, instead of the preferred "linear"

silicon CCPD.s; in some cases Gallium CCPD.s may be used, and/or

two-dimension arrays--or even "Camera tubes". Workers will also

recognize that there are special advantages to using focus-

adjustment to vary beam intensity

What is claimed is:

Infra-red extraction means arranged and adapted to remove a

substantial part of the infra-red energy projected along a

prescribed beam-path from a high-intensity spectral source means;

said extraction means comprising: selective reflector means

interrupting said beam path and adapted to divert infra-red

energy as an infra-red beam along a second path; and associated

infra-red dissipation means including multi-blade surface means

disposed within enclosure means, adapted to receive said infra-

red beams and to trap them and convert them to surface heat;

this surface means being arranged in an infra-red trap

configuration to receive infra-red energy beams at an input

portion and allow essentially none thereof to re-emerge

therefrom; the reflector means being interposed across said beam

path and adapted to divert only infra-red energy to said

dissipation means;

said surface means comprising a pair of opposed sets of parallel

blades, disposed obliquely to the direction of said infra-red

beams, said blades arrayed to converge upon said infra-red beams

and block them, to form a convergent, infra-red trap preventing

reflection back of any significant portion of an entering

infra-red beam.

The invention of claim 1 wherein an exhaust means is disposed at

an open end of said enclosure means, opposite the infra-red

entry portion, whereby the exhaust means is adapted and arranged

to pull ambient air coolingly past said blades.

The invention of claim 1 wherein the selective reflector means

is a hot mirror

A method of extracting and dissipating infra-red energy from a

lamp which projects a high-intensity optical beam of spectral

radiation along a first beam path, this method comprising:

providing a hot mirror along said path to selectively divert

only the energy as an infra-red beam along a second path; and

disposing an infra-red trap with intercepting oblique blade

means, across the second path so as to intercept said infra-red

beams at said blade means and block them and convert them

essentially entirely to surface heat, with essentially no

infra-red beam reflection back along this second path.

The resolution of the LANDSAT images was comparatively poor,

however, being on the order of tens of meters, rather than of

centimeters. Nevertheless, they gave visual access to the layout

of the reactor complex and cooling pond. Infrared LANDSAT

imaging showed both the fire in Unit No. 4 and the chilling of

the pond, which indicated that the three remaining reactors in

the complex had been shut down.

ABC news broadcast SPOT infrared photos that showed a plume of

hot air trailing from the reactor building.

It Pays To Think

Has anyone else heard that Kentucky Fried Chicken had to change

there name to KFC because there chickens were so genetically

made that they weren't really chickens anymore? They're made with

no legs so that can't run around, a third breast to produce

more meat, and they are kept in very tiny cages so they can

store many of them in very tiny spaces.

What do you guys think about this?

I think his blurring the lines between movies and reality

isn't the real issue here . they should check out the professors a

He would still be the one ultimately responsible for his actions,

but since the left loves to blame anyone but the underdog

ignore the fact if he had been forced fed this garbage by the

leftist cultural elitist professors. Then it would be ironic that

he chose the same school for his massacre, other than a mall,

The Bride of Frankenstein

Widely considered as superior to its predecessor, The Bride of

Frankenstein is one of those movies that is probably as great as

many will tell you, but not nearly the dreary, serious

meditation on the folly of playing God you may have been lead to

believe nor is it an old and creaky monster movie that modern

audiences will yawn during. In fact, watching this, I was

reminded a tad of the Re-animator movies, what with the off-hand

treatment of the Monster and the various shenanigans he gets

into along the way. The movie is a good mix of black comedy and

some creepiness (chiefly provided by the completely demented

Dr. Pretorious).

He makes Henry go back to Pretorious' hidden lab and Pretorious

then pulls out several small cylinders covered in black sleeves.

"What's this," me and Henry were thinking. Then, one by one he

pulls off each of the sleeves and reveals little teeny-tiny

people about eight inches high in each of the cylinders. These

dudes are dressed up like kings and queens and ballerinas

(another horror movie with a ballet connection!) and they're

just as alive as you or I. Henry is amazed and somewhat

disgusted by this, saying that what Pretorious is doing is black

magic, not science like his big green dummy was.

United States Patent 4652422

The invention relates to a supporting device for an elongated

nuclear reactor fuel element and/or an elongated nuclear reactor

fuel assembly, the supporting device having an elongated

receiving sleeve vertically arranged and mounted on a base

surface, and having an open upper end with which a holding

device is associated for suspending the nuclear reactor fuel

element or nuclear reactor fuel assembly inside the receiving

sleeve.

A supporting device of this general type has already been

proposed heretofore. The receiving sleeve of the heretofore

proposed supporting device is secured at the edge of the opening

at the upper end thereof by a clamp to the edge of the opening,

at the upper end of another receiving sleeve, and if necessary

or desirable to an arm which is located on a supporting post on

the base surface. The holding device for suspending the nuclear

reactor fuel assembly, respectively, is formed of a simple strap

in the opening at the upper end of the receiving sleeve of the

heretofore proposed supporting device.

It is an object of the invention of the instant application to

provide a supporting device for an elongated component such as a

nuclear reactor fuel element or nuclear reactor fuel assembly

disposed in a receiving sleeve with improved protection against

horizontal thrust forces and vertical compression or upsetting

forces, such as can occur for example during earthquakes.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, there is provided,

in accordance with the invention, a supporting device for a

member formed of at least part of an elongated nuclear reactor

fuel element, the supporting device having an elongated

receiving sleeve mounted vertically on a base surface and having

an upper end formed with an opening and a holding device located

at the upper end of the sleeve for suspending the member inside

the receiving sleeve, comprising a removable cover closing the

opening at the upper end of the receiving sleeve, the holding

device being secured to the inside of the cover.

The cover is, or has a part thereof advantageously fitted into

and matching the opening at the upper end of the receiving

sleeve or fits on the upper end so as to cover the opening,

ensures the stability of form of the receiving sleeve when

horizontal and vertical forces are applied thereto due to a

disturbance such as an earthquake, for example, so that

upsetting, compression or buckling of the nuclear reactor fuel

element and nuclear reactor fuel assembly, respectively, freely

suspended from the cover inside the receiving sleeve is avoided

as much as possible.

In addition, the cover according to the invention also

completely closes the opening at the upper end of the receiving

sleeve so that the nuclear reactor fuel element or nuclear

reactor fuel assembly that is freely suspended vertically from

the cover in the receiving sleeve is not accessible from the

outside and so is completely safe from damage, for example, by

the careless handling of tools. Also, the cover at the opening

formed in the upper end of the receiving sleeve ensures that no

foreign matter can fall into this receiving sleeve and be

deposited on parts of the nuclear reactor fuel element assembly,

from which, under certain circumstances, it can be removed only

at considerable expense or not at all.

In the years immediately after Hiroshima, nuclear energy was

treated as a miracle of science, with an almost charming naivete -

we were supposed to take the futurists seriously when they

predicted atom-powered toasters. Still, the destructive

potential of atom-splitting was never too far off in the wings,

psychologically speaking. In the fantastic plots of pulp fiction,

nuclear power took over as the primary device to explain an

otherwise outlandish plot, just as electricity had animated

Frankenstein's monster in Mary Shelley's 1816 novel.

HE'D RATHER BE PLAYING SCRABBLE

Believe it or not, that's exactly what happens in this game.

Frankenstein fusses over you for a minute, then basically

dismisses you. It makes you want to scream, "Hey! Please tell me

what's more interesting in your life right now than a DEAD MAN

come to LIFE?!?!" Very, very silly. Not to mention the security

issues of having a monster stumbling around free in a huge

castle.

A castle, it seems, with absolutely NO servants, domestics, or

assistants of ANY kind. Also very, very silly.

However, if you can get past this odd premise, there is a

reasonably chewy game here. There's lots and lots to explore and

a diabolical mystery to uncover.

Frankenburger, after the beginning of the Franco-Prussian

war (1870-71), strongly advocated the union of the southern

and the northern states of Germany; and when, after the

conclusion of peace, his ability and rectitude secured for

him the position of Liberal leader, he threw all the weight

of his influence against the sectionalism of the Bavarian Center

and in favor of a strong central government. He was especially

well qualified to deal with financial questions, and rendered

important services as regular reporter on the army budget

for the Bavarian House of Representatives, for which services

the king rewarded him with the Michaelsorden I. Class.

Frankenburger omitted no opportunity to champion the rights of

his coreligionists. In 1880 he was instrumental in abrogating

the taxes which, in many parts of Bavaria, the Jews had been

compelled to pay to pastors and mayors. These taxes had many

curious names, as "Beichtgroschen"

The old salts would probably have been a better boat connection,

but for reasons he couldn't explain Mick chose a seat two stools

from the woman. The bartender asked for his order with a jerk of

the head, then padded off like Frankenstein to get a draught

beer. Mick's reflection had only one eye thanks to a collection

of faded stickers on the mirror. Without much forethought or any

real motivation, he turned to the woman and asked, "Come here

often?"

"Take this," she said pointing to the wheel. "Don't steer any

further to the left than that cooling tower on the power plant,"

she said just before she, the now empty pitcher, and glass

descended the companionway.

He wondered if the alcohol was giving Helen confidence in him he

should lack in himself. Maybe he needed his own pitcher of

martinis. Perhaps then the unusual weakness in his arms would

subside. Years of training had made him nearly invulnerable to

physical assault, no matter how fierce or abrupt, but the

nervous anxiety he felt at that moment was self-generated. It

could silently envelop him and shake his confidence more

effectively than any adversary. Mick recognized this opponent

and quickly forced it back into the nether world from which it

sprung.

After a few minutes the jittery arm muscles and roller-coaster

stomach faded. Using the cooling tower as a guide, the boat kept

moving along in a rhythm that was soothing and exciting at the

same time. This felt a lot more like his destiny-driven image of

sailing Out on the water, sea air has a clean, almost antiseptic,

smell. Cotton ball clouds and the turquoise sky made him forget

the filth he had left and to which he would return.

Helen had been quiet for about a half hour when a loud, dull

thud vibrated through the boat's frame. "Everything all right

down there," he yelled into the companionway. No answer, but

that was pretty much how the conversation had gone up till now.

He moved as close to the hatch as possible without loosing his

grip on the wheel. A limp hand rested on the floor of the

darkened cabin. Great, he thought, she was passed out on the

floor.

The power plant wasn't dangerously close, but it had begun to

loom larger in the distance. The giant cooling towers and huge

metal, cable-toting robots usually gave Mick the creeps,

especially after China Syndrome. Maybe the leisurely approach

gave him more time to get used to it, but it didn't bother him.

Despite the captain's departure from consciousness and his own

ignorance of matters nautical, things were OK.

U is for

UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS

Sherry-quaffing aesthetes that we are, we've long pondered the

most chilling, unnerving environment in which to set a film.

What kind of location has the most powerful associations of

terror and foreboding? All the vintage horror staples have

weathered less than well.

The most forbidding habitats tend overwhelmingly to be

man-made, claustrophobic and, above all, sterile. Laboratories,

in other words, whether research establishments, operating

theatres, or torture chambers, are the places that yield silent

menace in spades. After all, the lab has been the staple of

horror since almost day one, but it's not the castle-bound,

lightning-powered sort of lab featured in FRANKENSTEIN we're on

about here, which is more comical than scary, possibly due to

the presence of so many parodies, which lest we forget began

with the high camp of the film's own sequel, the deranged BRIDE

OF FRANKENSTEIN, which in turn begat the Victorian oak-pannelled

lab dotted with various brass 'n' glass contraptions, with the

feverish waistcoated doctor jotting down experimental results in

many a Hammer period endeavour (for possibly the prime example,

see the serum-testing antics in the much-parodied THE CREEPING

FLESH).

....

In another bit of last-minute changeabout, the final torture

chamber in which Jonathan Pryce finally loses it was going to be,

in a logical progression, an all-white cube, but the discovery

of a dormant cooling tower changed everything, and for the

better. Of course, why anyone would use a giant cooling tower

for such high- level "reprogramming" work remains a sore point

with internet logic- hounds, which is partly why it's such a

great choice. Add to that a rickety torture chair far more

evocative in its poor design than contemporary film 1984's

facial rat cages, and you've got a link back to the tyranny of

medicine again (think MARATHON MAN rather than DENTIST ON THE

JOB).

Psychological chair-based torture (remember Mastermind's

interrogatory trademarks were derived from espionage techniques)

is pared down to just chair, subject (Warren Beatty) and

ISRAEL and US DEVELOP INFRARED BEAM WEAPON

Was the collapse of the World Trade Center caused by a laser

beam weapon? A physicist who worked on the original "deep

infrared" beam weapon has reason to believe so.

Amazingly, more than five months after the greatest terror

attack on America in history, the cause of the towers'

structural failure has yet to be investigated and re mains

unexplained, according to America's leading fire engineering

experts.

As part of an on-going investigation, American Free Press has

interviewed a German physicist who believes a laser beam weapon,

employing infrared technology originally developed in the Soviet

Union, may have caused the towers' collapse.

The Monster is Progress:

Exploring the Fear of Science

in Frankenstein and Neuromancer

According to Jack Lynch, creator of the definitive online

hypertextual Frankenstein project, entitled "Workshop of Filthy

Creation, Cyberspace Division":

In the eighteenth century the establishment of official

scientific societies and institutions in Great Britain continued,

involving governmental funding of various astronomical

observatories and missions of exploration in search of botanical

and zoological specimens. But the century was most noteworthy

for its use of increasingly precise measuring devices: more

precise measurements in turn made possible more refined

scientific theories. Isaac Newton's enormously influential

theories on gravitation, for instance, grew out of discrepancies

between the predictions of the old models and more accurate

observations of actual orbits. Increased precision in balances

allowed chemists to reject phlogiston theory in favor of modern

atomic theory, just as improved optics allowed for the discovery

of both new celestial bodies and new microorganisms and

anatomical structures.

As the 19th century began, the applications Lynch speaks of were

wide-ranging, and many of them involved electricity. One of the

popular postulations being explored was the concept of re-

animation through the use of electricity, based on the

experimentation of Galvani. According to Jack Lynch, "there was

great hope of using the galvanic battery in medical cures, even

of reanimating the dead.

In the second chapter of Frankenstein, Doctor Frankenstein says:

On this occasion a man of great research in

natural philosophy was with us, and, excited by this

catastrophe, he entered on the explanation of a theory which he

had formed on the subject of electricity and galvanism, which

was at once new and astonishing to me. (Shelley 46)

Infrared absorption and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

I. Vibrational intensity expressions

A formalism is presented which permits the expression of

corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation without direct

reference to the excited electronic states of the molecule. This

is accomplished by the introduction of a vibronic gauge function

which is the solution of a separate, known differential equation.

With this formalism the exact equivalence of the vector

potential and dipole moment expressions for infrared vibrational

intensities in the Born-Oppenheimer theory is established. The

perturbation terms for the corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer

approximation are discussed and their meaning is illustrated

with the example of a translating hydrogen atom. The vibronic

gauge formalism is extended to molecular orbitals where the

separability of the problem in terms of individual orbitals is

demonstrated.

Poet's Postscript: Philosophical Frankenstein

Halloween would be a perfect time to be campy and silly,

but somehow I got the bug to attempt to express

something half-way serious.

I suppose that I must get my silliness-versus-seriousness

cycles in sync.

I think that Frankenstein was more than just a monster story.

It attempted to deal with a few philosophical issues.

One of the messages that seemed to be implied -

There are certain areas in which science and man are not

"meant" to delve, because they are infringing on "God's"

territory. I want to make clear that is most certainly not

my belief.

There was an excellent scene in one of the "Planet of the Apes"

series, where the human showed a paper airplane to an

ape-priest of the future. The ape-priest took the plane, wrinkled

his nose, crumpled it up, and pitched it away, with a gesture of

disgust, saying how preposterous it was to think that apes or men

could ever fly.

Reminds me very much of a businessman on the streets of

Cleveland, when I was a college kid, trying to hand out a

gay-rights political flyer. Crumpled it, threw it - same attitude,

same sense of self-certainty: "What utter NONSENSE!".

It is easy to imagine an alternative history, where the Wright Brothers

would have been burned at the stake for daring to infringe on the

territory of the harp-playing angels in the clouds. If the early aircraft

had all failed in fiery crashes, the religious leaders could have laughed

and mocked this "inevitable" outcome as divine punishment of man's

hubris.

It could have set aviation back by many centuries.

The imagery that I put together, among other things, is more

expressing just that restraint and good sense are needed, and

currently are sadly lacking.

I can picture how capitalism could kill itself, where the money-obsessed

Carl Icahns, the Jack Abramoff sleazeballs, the power-hungry,

wheeler-dealer politicians, the profit-motivated pharmaceuticals,

all intersect with the gobblety-gook technical worlds of the Robert Gallos

and Beatrice Hahns, and manage to kill millions, without even needing

any terrorist plots. Just one really bad vaccine, drug, food product, etc,

would do the job, with the best of intentions. Or maybe, with good

intentions to make big profits on hot stocks.

The problem isn't science, though. It the corruption of science by the

corporate and political systems.

There isn't anything that we are "meant" to do or not do. The Universe

doesn't really mean anything by our being here at all. We are quite free.

We just have to be prudent about the possible consequences.

The Frankstein story seemed to be conveying an anti-science, religious notion

of this type, yet it also seemed to be conveying another heretical idea that

challenged religious dogma.

The story seemed to imply that the monster had a valid defense, to be

able to say, "I did not create myself."

There are would-be philosophers who claim, "Oh, but we do create ourselves.

We define who and what we are, by our 'free will' choices"

I think that the monster is correct. The would-be philosophers manage to think

that they are making sense only because they think in terms of fuzzy-logic

and are not defining their own terminology clearly.

They think in magical terms, where the decision-making process consists

of a little angel on one shoulder, and a little devil on the other. Which one

you decide to listen to depends on whether you decide have more of

the little angel or little devil in you. If you have the little angel, you will

be rewarded with lovely harps in the clouds, otherwise the world has

earned the right to chant "Bad! Bad!" and pitch you into burning sulfur

for all eternity.

Not exactly thinking like a neurologist, a brain scientist, in terms of

neural connections, receptors, molecular interactions, organic chemistry.

You could ask the philosophers, "At what point in the firing of neurons,

does the magic come in, and the angels are able to violate the laws

of physics?"

Their view is essentially supernaturalistic. Some of them would deny it;

some of them would embrace it as a virtue.

Illogic is a virtue only if it is the truth, which illogic rarely is.

It is "faith" not science, that is the true hubris- people imagining that

they are guided to correct beliefs because of their own superior virtue,

being proud that they can maintain their beliefs in spite of all rational

evidence to the contrary.

Even without getting into a discussion of neural connections, there

is a philosophical "Problem of Evil": did "God" create evil, or is

there a creative force in the universe that is independent of "God"?

Is there evil "ex nihilo", created out of nothingness, independent of

God's bringing the rest of creation from nothingness?

If we had "free choice", they why would anyone choose "evil", only

to bring destruction upon themselves, as well as everyone else?

If choice is motivated by "character", then it is still controlled by

something and not really "free". To say that we are free to choose

a better character for ourselves would only create a circularity.

We don't choose a better character, because we are already of

too poor a character.

We didn't choose that original character, though- we are thrust

into this world, having not the slightest idea what is going on,

never asking for the privilege. We cannot create a pebble, much less

a planet. We did not create our own bones, or eyes, or brain tissue,

or choose our parents. If some of us are only so much human garbage

to be burned in an incinerator, then God must have created garbage,

which does not speak well of his competence.

This is not a profound question, it is a ridiculous one. It is puzzling

only if you try to cling to a perspective of religious clap-trap.

Even religiously oriented individuals sometimes will admit that they

do not have answers for these questions. Other times, they will

do a shoe-shuffle and tap-dance faster than a Republican in a

men's room toilet stall, but they only dance around the questions and

never do find a convincing answer.

I would not mind people seeking comfort in religious superstition,

if it did not become a mask and a crutch for their irrational, petty

hatreds.

I write about Frankenstein partly because I feel in that role,

to be waving poetical, nuclear holocaust under your nose, as the

envisioned monster-threat that you make for yourselves by

your own attitudes.

If you treat an entire segment of society like they are some

kind of monsters, threats to civil order, gross-out jokes,

dangers to children, a blight that should not exist - then you should

not complain if some of them start to menace you like Frankenstein.

There is an ironic parity among monster charges. Frankstein

thinks that you are the real monster.

A genocide advocate can give a "friend of the court" brief

to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the media doesn't even report

it. A leader of the one of most prominent "family" groups

talks like crackpot, callings gays "forces of Satan", and yet he

gets courted like perfectly respectable leader.

Little things, big things, monstrous things, over and over,

most of it happening off the radar screen of an indifferent public.

You would not have a legitimate complaint about all

the monsters that might come to kill you. Sometimes, they

are only the monsters that you willfully made.

Frankstein does have one note of almost-forgiveness for the

human race, even though he can and will destroy it, if it refuses to

acknowledge that it needs to change.

He doesn't really blame you. You did not create yourselves,

either. You are the kinds of hopeless bastards that you are,

because you are the products of a dog-eat-dog evolution

in an uncaring and random world. Many of you are too primitive

even to accept your own evolution, because then you might have

to confront a world-view that has an uncaring universe at the

heart of it.

Pity the poor human race, it has nothing if it does not have

its delusions to sustain it.

The fault is not in yourselves. It really is in the stars-

the swirling, coalescing gases that form into planets and bump

into each other haphazardly, wiping out entire species for nothing

more than an exercise in the laws of gravity.

Frankenstein sort of forgives you. He might have to kill you,

if you don't get the message, but he almost forgives you, anyway.
