Full Scan items scanned drops from 229,000 to 180,000

Why upon using Microsoft Security Essentials after a fresh install FULL SCAN about 229,430 items and then, after a few days later repeatedly scan only about 180,000 items?  (Yet, upon an uninstall and new install (with the same definition update), once again

scan about 229,000 items.)
