DeKalb homeowner shoots, kills would-be robber

An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by his intended victim Thursday
night in south DeKalb County, police said.

Ronald Johnson, his wife and two children, ages 4 and 16, were returning to
their Stardust Circle home shortly before 9 p.m. when "he noticed two men
standing at the bottom of his driveway by a fence," DeKalb police
spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

Johnson, 36, told police that as he pulled into his driveway, "those
suspects pulled out handguns and attempted to rob him," Parish said.

"The victim was armed and he pulled out his gun and immediately started
firing, and the suspects fled," Parish said. "The victim and the family then
ran inside the home and called police."

When officers arrived, they found one of the suspects dead in the back yard,
a handgun near his body," Parish said.

She said the second suspect was not believed to have been shot. Detectives
are investigating the possibility that there was a third suspect acting as a
lookout, Parish said.

The identity of the suspect killed has not been released. Parish said
Johnson would not be charged in the shooting.
