Gas prices and how they affect your income.

My wife and I had this discussion earlier tonight, and I thought it would make an interesting poll.

I had convinced her, that after adjusting for our annual cost of living raises, that our income level has NOT been hit by gas prices, as a matter of fact, we are able to save MORE then we could a year ago at this same time... our regular expenses and needs have not changed since then, so evidently, the MARKETS have.

Now that extra cost of living raise she got, which was a big fucking quarter, amounted to $10 more a week in her check on a 40 hour week, subtracting the standard tax amount, and adjusting for income expenses, the extra money we gain in cost of living MORE then makes up for the current gas prices... I'm just curious, how has it REALLY effected all of you ??

So if we were EQUAL, you'd be paying 3.56 a gallon, if its HIGHER then that in Australia, then you are poor and We are rich !!

Eeeerm, I actually asked about the price of diesel there, compared to the price of petrol, which you call gasoline.

Our unleaded premium petrol retails for around $1.10 per litre at the mo, which equates to $5.50 US a gallon. But remember, our incomes are higher, as are our worker benefits, so don't be thinking you have it better.

We are the lucky country. And don't you forget it. ;)

I don't need to think about it, phreak. I know that your economy is based on vehicular usage. You gov encourages multiple car ownership for families.

Burning fossil fuels is the very basis of your economy. Hence the worry of loss of control in the middle east. But let's not get into that here. I'm fucking burnt out debating that issue.

I run used cooking oil in my second vehicle, an old toyota troopy. It seems to actually run better. My modern mazda turbo diesel still drinks commercial fuel.

I actually won't rebut that, believe it or not. I have stock in AUSTRALIAN markets. And foriegn markets are strong at this point. Which goes to show, if GAS is so damn high like people think, it sure isn't taking a hit on us in the markets. THERE GROWING !!

It's a sore point here in OZ because we have excise on fuel sales, and GST on top of that. Our gov is creaming it big time, and the proles are fucking sick of paying through the nose for fuel.

I'm a contractor, so I can claim the GST back on my tax. The proles can't.

When I started driving my car in 2002, diesel prices were about $1.50/gallon. We're up to about $2.70 here. So I pay $12/week more now. However, I have gotten BETTER at managing my finances (3 years ago I was 20, so still kinda fresh outta high school and irresponsible). So it hasn't effected me much. It still sucks, and I would much rather be paying the prices from 3 years ago, but it really isn't earth shattering and isn't going to send me into debt. Besides, $12/week isn't THAT much. Although yearly, it's $624 more. I really could use that extra cash, but what are ya gonna do?

When I bought my Tundra, gas prices were in the $1.69 neighborhood now for Super Unleaded, or Premium, it's a $2.79!!! Holy fuck!

I just drive a lot less these days. I drive to work and back and to the beer store. It's not like I have a booming social life these days... been logging 60+ hours a week in my brown delivery van. The heat sucks when you wear brown all day long.

Well I work for my mom making deliveries and she throws in extra for gas every week. I also suffer through the heat using the AC as little as possible. I tdoes suck ass though. Longer trips are killing me.

I got rid of my Grand Am last month and got a Toyota Celica to use to take the kids to school, and do my part time pizza delivery job, and my regular job, and I'm getting MUCH better MPG with the Celica then the Grand Am did, I even have been coming out AHEAD on tips during deliverys with the improved MPG, an I only get .75 cents for each delivery plus tips. Another thing is, my Grand Am had a speedometer sensor problem, which will impact your MPG, I was getting VERY shitty MPG and I am sooo glad I got rid of that piece of shit after all these years.

Now I just wish my mini-van got as good gas mileage. But at least I'm lucky and my van takes e85 fuel which is .30 cents a gallon cheaper then regular or e10 ethanol.

Actually, a study was done I believe it was Mythbusters, so may not be 100% accurate about A/C vs. open windows. It actually ends up being the same gas usage when you have all the windows open because of the drag it causes. Just a lil' tidbit.

TRrue, milk may cost more per gallon, but I use half a gallon of milk a week, a twelve pack of beer ever two months maybe, a gallon of JD in a lifetime if I am lucky. (BTW our gass cost $2.53 at the moment and I get milk for $2.99 a gallon so that throws the addition ther out the window)

To me, the real difference is in the way I live my life now.

When I was in San Diego, I drove about 300 miles a week. Here in Ohio, normally I drive 300 miles in a month and a half.

Although my 2003 VW Eurovan only gets about 18-20 mpg on the freeway with both of the A/C's blasting, I don't really mind at all. I gladly pay the increased price per MPG loss, to have the COMFORT and size of a large 7 passenger van.

Given that when I'm off someplace, it is usually to go out for travel or fun and usually consists of myself, the sweetie, the 3 sons, and a couple of friends tagging along. When I divide my MPG versus the amount of people I can drag along, it's worth it to me.

Funny thing though. When I got here in Ohio last year, the day I left CA I paid $2.97 per gallon for premium. When I arrived here in Ohio, I promptly paid $1.53 for the same thing and in all truthfulness; it was 93 octane here instead of CA's 91!

Yesterday, I filled up at $2.73 per gallon, so the way I figure it, I'm still $.24 cheaper than I used to pay 1 year ago but I drive a LOT less now.
