INDIANAPOLIS -- A 2-year-old boy was pronounced dead after he was found
unresponsive beneath his passed-out mother at an Indianapolis motel room
early Wednesday, police said.
Sheldon Bartley Jr. was taken to Community East Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m., police said.
His mother, Latasha McMorris, who had previously lost custody of the boy
when she was convicted of child neglect last year, was arrested Wednesday on
a felony charge of neglect. Police said they believe the boy suffocated, and
that McMorris, 24, had been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when
she passed out.
Police said McMorris' boyfriend, Willie Clark, called 911 at about 12:30
a.m. when he found her passed out and lying on the child in room 104 of the
EconoLodge Motel in the 3500 block of North Shadeland Avenue.
The boyfriend, Willie Clark, told police that the boy was not breathing when
he found him.
Police said they are treating the case as a homicide. An autopsy was planned
Wednesday.
"Whether she had done any harm to the child before or ... just passed out
and smothered him will have to be determined through the coroner's office,"
Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount said.
Police said the child was found unresponsive beneath his mother
in room 104 at an EconoLodge motel.
Investigators said McMorris was convicted of child neglect in July 2007.
Child welfare workers removed McMorris' children, including Bartley, from
her custody when she was convicted, police said.
According to officials, McMorris also has several prior arrests on
alcohol-related offenses.
The Department of Child Services said Wednesday it was trying to determine
"the complete extent of this child's involvement with the department."
"DCS will conduct a complete and intensive review to verify all information
and facts. We are limited by law to the information we can share now and
will be working with the court to share our findings and to make those
available to the public," the department said in an e-mailed statement.
