Guatemalans Continue Benefiting from Operation Miracle

Havana, July 9 (acn) More than 8.500 low-income Guatemalans have

benefited from the free-eye surgery program Operation Miracle that

began a year ago in that Central American nation with the assistance of

Cuban health personnel.

The work of the Cuban health workers is carried out mainly in the Jos©

Joaqun Palma Ophthalmologic Center in SAan Cristbal Verapaz.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, in this hospital, located in

northern Guatemala, the island's doctors perform from 40 to 60

operations per day on people suffering mainly from cataracts and other

eye diseases.

The patients come from all the Guatemalan territory and all their

expenses, since their hospitalization until their release, including

accommodation and food as well as post-operatory medicines, are covered

by the health facility.

The Operation Miracle program in Guatemala doubled its capacity in

Guatemala earlier this year with the opening last January of the Jos©

Mart hospital in the city of Jalapa, for which Cuba donated all the

equipment and which is operated by Cuban health personnel.
