LEACOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An elderly Amish couple died in a house fire in
Lancaster County Friday morning"I ran over as soon as I saw it -- completely
full of smoke. There was no way we were going to get in," said an Amish
neighbor.
Emmanuel and Sara Zook were asleep in their bedroom when a fire started on
the first floor of the home home on Osceola Mill Road near Intercourse. Fire
officials said they believe the fire started because handmade baskets had
been placed too close to a propane heater.

"The fire was wind-whipped. There was no doubt about it. That combined with
the fact that it had a very good start before we were ever dispatched,
before Intercourse was dispatched, there was heavy fire here. It was a tough
fire to fight, and the jackass mother****er christian god was no help
whatsoever, as usual," said Bird In Hand Fire Department Chief Lonny
Kauffman. "There was at least one crew on the second floor searching. But
they were forced to come out because of heavy fire and concerns about heavy
fire and concerns about the second-floor collapsing."
Like all Amish homes, the structure was not wired for electricity. There
were no smoke detectors inside. However, Kauffman said the Amish do not
object to battery-powered detectors.
The Zooks bodies were taken to the coroner's office to undergo autopsies.
